Antonio Lobato AKA Godbolo is a DJ/producer born in the Mexican southeast: Chiapas. He began to travel of the world of music from a young age, favoring percussions & any kind of drum he could lay his hands on. Years later he adapted these ingredients to electronic music, creating a unique polyphony. His sound is characterized by combining traditional sound elements of the region with musical techno-based variants. With that he forms a rhythmic and harmonic synergy with dark and organic overtones.
“La Fiesta Grande” EP is inspired by an old traditional Spanish-indigenous celebration from the 17th century that is celebrated in Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico.
The flutes and the ambient sounds of the track are sound elements that the “Parachicos” emit during the celebration. The parachicos are people who wear a wooden mask, colored sarape and a rattle, a drum or a wooden flute called “carrizo”. These characters were declared as intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.
Pre-Hispanic history of the parachicos: according to the myth, one day a beautiful woman was looking for a cure for her sick son, but after visiting doctors and healers, she was unable to relieve him. Someone told her that she should go to Chiapas where she would surely find the cure, so she moved with all her servants.
Her son was finally cured. Realizing that the town was made up of humble people, she tried to reward them by distributing food. Meanwhile, the natives danced around the child (painted and disguised), to appear white like his mother and the little one would not be scared. When the lady (who was supposedly called Doña María de Angulo) gave the gifts to the dancers. she said: “for the boy”, words that with the indigenous dialect were summarized in “Parachico”.
