Women within motorsports was once only ever referenced along side Grid Girls. Now in present day we not only have women and girls as engineers, technical analysts and media specialists but also racing. Formula One Acadamy was founded in 2023 by Formula One following the W Series going into administration. The formula is managed by Susie Wolff who is a racing driver herself. She competed in British Formula Renault, British Formula 3 and DTM. This is a major step in the right direction for girls to get involved within motorsports, more specifically, Formula 1. We are still not at a place we should be however, we are so happy to see massive companies such as Formula 1 taking the steps to bring inclusivity into the sport. After a formula two season, the champion of that season is not allowed to compete within F2 for the next two subsequent seasons which avoids multi champions within the F2 category. This also allows for new drivers to advance to a higher level championship. This leaves a couple of options for F2 champions. Progress up to F1 if a seat becomes available or become a reserve driver. We saw this with Oscar Piastri who become Alpine’s reserve driver. Or compete in other motorsport championships such as Indycar, Formula E or Super Formula. As there are only 20 drivers on the grid at the present time and then 22 drivers a year in F2, this means the chances of advancing to F1 is low. It really is down to when your time comes, if the seat is available for you. Saying this, competing in other motorsport championships is not a downgrade by any means, it’s just a different avenue for the driver to go down. Some do better in other motorsports such as Nyck De-Vries who won the Formula E championship in the 2020-2021 season.
