OUR BEST BIG-FISH DAY EVER!

After some stressful airport shenanigans flying back from Orlando, FL to MSP...I finally got home about 4:35am, hooked up the boat and went to meet Nick Lindner to fish the 2024 United Way Fishing Tournament which kicked off at 6am. We could fish any public lakes within 6 different Minnesota counties (Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Aitkin, Cass and Crow Wing).

This tourney used a length-to-weight conversion and our best 5 walleyes went 56.61 lbs, which was a 29.95” average! 🤯 Even crazier is that bag of a lifetime somehow only landed us in 4th place LOL.

I ended up catching my new PB walleye that stretched to 31” after plopping a 3/16-oz VMC Ned Rig Jig into some thick w**ds where she was waiting to ambush. It was a wild ride!

BIG PROPS to the teams that made our 30” average look silly! 😅 We might have to fish further north next year….

This tournament supports United Way and their mission to transform lives in our communities (boost education, economic mobility, and health resources) by uniting people and organizations to maximize donor impact. 🙌 Thanks to all those involved!

When the Chicago-style hot dog is Al Lindner approved 👀 you know it’s done right. Target Walleye’s Chris Philen knocked it out of the park! Oh, and we washed ‘em down with Portillo’s style Italian beef sandwiches, deep dish pizza, brownies…absolutely spoiled for the Vikings vs Bears game tonight. 🙌 Thx so much, Chris!

Now for this last 20 seconds of the game…. 😰

Check out this 5.84-lb giant! 😳 My biggest largemouth of the season so far and it came on the smallest bait…a Rapala CrushCity Ned BLT on a 3/16-oz VMC Ned Rig Jig.

This time of year the greenest w**ds hold the most fish. Any clumps/patches that were still standing in 9-10’ were loaded. I’d pick off the dumb ones with a big jig then work back thru ‘em with a Ned Rig. Caught about a dozen walleyes too…although I wasn’t targeting them this time.

I managed to scrape up a 3rd-place finish at the Walleye Alliance, Inc. Fall Classic on Pelican Lake over the weekend! Such a fun, well-ran event by a team of folks who work their tails off to better walleye fishing in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

This derby is a 5-fish limit and only 1 of those can be over 20” long. All 4 of my ‘unders’ were B-E-A-Utiful 19” to 19.75” fish, but unfortunately my ‘over’ was a scrawny 23-incher for a total of 12.56 lbs. Just could not get a BIG bite. 😅 But hey, I’ll take it!

Despite what the calendar say, water temps in the mid-60s still had fish in late-summer patterns. I was junk fishing and running all over the dang lake picking up one here and one there. Ended up catching about 30 of ‘em with a 1-2-3 punch of confidence baits in 10-18’ around cabbage and coontail w**ds

I was cycling thru #7 Rapala Jigging Raps, a 3/16-oz VMC Ned Rig Jig with a ‘crawler in sparser w**ds, and the same jighead with a Z-Man Big TRD when poking around deeper in the w**ds.

Massive props to Dan Steffen and Jake Caughey on dominating with a perfect 16.58-lb bag 🤯 that included ‘big fish’ of the derby with a 7.14-lber! And to Nick Cekalla and Will Pappenfus whose 2nd-place bag went 14.21 lbs which would normally win any other year lol.

19/09/2023

If you’re going to catch your biggest MN walleye ever…might as well do it on game day! 🤯

I swore this 30-incher (8.72 lbs) was a muskie or big pike the way it was peeling drag, but then a few feet from the boat it finally turned into the right species lol.

Caught her poking around the edge of shallow 10-11’ w**d clumps with a 3/16-oz VMC Ned Rig Jig and ‘crawler. I was slinging it on my favorite walleye rod = the butter smooth Elliott Identity ‘Rig & Jig’ (7’4” ML fast) with 6-lb Sufix Performance Braid and an 8-lb fluorocarbon leader.

Overall it was a verrrrry tough bite. That giant paired up with a couple of unders landed us in 3rd place and ‘big fish’ at the Walleye Wackers TOC on Gull Lake. We scrambled all over for the last 4.5 hours of the day and just couldn’t get another keeper walleye in the boat.

Big props to Adam Mord and Brady Sykora on grinding out the win and becoming back-to-back champs. 💪

Caught a different kind of Gull Lake 🦄 last night while throwing a Ned Rig in 9-12’ and she had a bunch of friends with her.

It’s so cool to see the Gull Lake smallmouth population taking off! This one was the biggest (flirting with the 5-lb mark 🥵) but we also caught smallies from 5 different year classes, in 5 different spots, all in different areas of the lake. It’s just going to get better and better!

Accidentally stumbled into a Gull Lake 🦄 last night during our local walleye league! Jumped out of the water like a dang tarpon LOL.

Somehow landed her on my Elliott Identity 'Drop Shot' rod (6’10” ML XF) with an 8-lb Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon leader. And Nick Lindner somehow-er got it in the net for a quick pic. 😅

Supposedly this lake has no walleyes. 🤷‍♂️ One of those shallow bowl type of waters that folks write-off as a "bass lake." Welp, they were wrong LOL.

My buddy Christian Hoffman and I snuck out to a local slough the other evening and stuck 5 grown ones in a couple hours, including these 2 giants that combined for 10 pounds themselves! 😳

His freak absolutely demolished a topwater frog. 💥 And my biggest came on the second flip of the trip while poking around with 3/4-oz tungsten.

That was fun! And now back to your regularly scheduled walleye programming…. 😅

BIG props to Mark Hightower and Jeremiah Piepkorn on putting together an 18.04-lb bag (6 fish, but only 2 can be >20") during a short 3-hour derby. Randomly drawn lake + no pre-fishing = seriously impressive around here! 👊

This was an afternoon I will never forget! Literally lost track of 4-lbers and sacked up 25 lbs without catching a “big” one lol. If you’re heading to Mille Lacs for smallies in the immediate future, I’d fish waist-deep or shallower…. And no, they’re not on beds yet.

My first open-water walleye of the season was a Gull Lake 29-incher (7.38 lbs) that took ‘Big Fish’ in Walleye Wackers last night! Nick backed it up with a 26” just a couple casts later. Unfortunately we couldn’t catch anything under the 20” slot to go with ‘em 😅 good problem to have sometimes hahaha.

Big props to Nate and Butch Blasing on taking home the win with an impressive 16.02 lbs! 🙌

It was a beautiful night on the water to get our 2023 Walleye Wackers season started. The fish did not want to cooperate as we would have all liked but 3 of our teams ended up with excellent bags for the weigh in. Congrats to our winners Nate Blasing & Butch Blasing.

Gull Lake Results:

1st- Nate & Butch Blasing 16.02lbs
2nd- Justin Mckee & Dustin Sawvel 15.59lbs
3rd- Brett McComas & Nick Lindner 12.64lbs
4th- Chris & Arlo Biermaier 5.93lbs
5th- Mark Hightower & Garth Askegaard 3.51lbs
6th- Terry Strus & Dustin Dorn 3.29lbs
7th- Jason Bahr & Mike Peterson 2.32lbs
8th- Brady Sykora & Adam Mord 1.66lbs
9th- Chuck & Briella Eggert 1.33lbs
10th- Kyle Spay & Mike Oneil 1.19lbs

1 day 14 hours and 17 minutes until the MN fishing opener…but who’s counting? 😅😮‍💨

Fishing after dark can be a major pain in the tuchus, but it’s usually worth the hassle! Grind all day for 1 or 2 bites 👀 then it can feel like you’re on a whole-new lake after the sun goes down and walleyes show up out of nowhere.

My buddy Nick Lindner and I rented a 21’ Yetti Fish House thru Kris Gaune and are staying right on Lake Winnipeg. 💯

This one came in and absolutely annihilated my #7 Rapala Rippin’ Rap! The “green tiger UV” color has been the deal for me.

Gotta run barbless hooks here in Manitoba, and I’ve been LOVING the solid fiberglass blank of the TUCR 38” Vulcan for keeping fish pinned after giving ‘em the beans! And it’s the perfect match for these oversized 7/8-oz baits…and hefty fish hahaha.

We still have another day of hooksets to get in, but it has already been an incredible experience. Kris is soooo dialed and I seriously cannot wait to do it again!
