It's World Sickle Cell Day.
Over the years, Alaafia has created artworks that depict the experiences of people living with Sickle Cell. As an artist, I find that pictures and videos can convey these experiences more effectively, providing comfort during times of stress and challenges. This year, we invite you to review these artworks and share your interpretations. Each Sickle Cell patient finds personal meaning in them.
Remember, many individuals with Sickle Cell are facing domestic/family violence, or sexual assault at home, struggling to voice their experiences or find someone who believes them. The rate of homelessness among Sickle Cell individuals in Wisconsin is increasing, as housing waiting lists can take years. People with Sickle Cell often need assistance in various ways because life is already challenging for them.

Additionally, I've been privileged to witness the resilience and strength of many women, not just in media portrayals but in real life.
On this Women's Day, we wish to celebrate the remarkable women who have contributed to Alaafia's success.
We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our funders, sponsors and partners, whose support has been crucial in our endeavors.
Lastly, we are thankful for the warm welcome and support from the city of Milwaukee and the State of Wisconsin, which have been instrumental in our journey.

There is a six-year gap between these two pictures, taken at the same spot.

In Picture One, you can see my body without any medication.

In Picture Two, you can observe my body with all the necessary Sickle Cell medications. It's interesting to note the weight difference. Medical science is undeniably effective when used appropriately.

However, the weight of my breasts has caused significant back pain and I've also experienced some challenging side effects from the medications I took to achieve that weight.

Our Awareness Campaigns Project educates families by raising awareness on issues affecting them.
These campaigns aim to inform the community on how to get help if one of these issues affects them.
It will allow families to know they have options regardless of the situation; they find themselves in.
