Starting from January 5, 2025, the introduction of high-speed train services between Hong Kong and Hangzhou promises to revolutionize travel for commuters and tourists alike. This exciting development, part of China Railways’ schedule adjustments for the first quarter of 2025, will allow travelers to journey between the two major cities in approximately seven hours. The new service will serve as a significant enhancement in regional connectivity, with direct high-speed routes offering convenient and efficient travel options for those looking to explore both metropolitan hubs.

Enhanced Travel Time Between Hong Kong and Hangzhou

The new service will feature two key trains: the G99 and G100, both of which currently operate between Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong. As part of the new schedule, these trains will reroute to make stops at Hangzhou West Station, thereby connecting the vibrant Hong Kong region with Hangzhou, a city known for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes.

Under the new schedule, the G99 train will depart daily from Hangzhou West Station at 3:10 pm, making stops at Huangshan North and Nanchang East stations along the way. The train is expected to arrive at West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong at 9:56 pm, completing the journey in 6 hours and 46 minutes. The G100 train, on the other hand, will leave West Kowloon Station at 11:37 am, with scheduled stops at Shenzhen North and Huizhou North stations, reaching Hangzhou West Station by 6:27 pm after a 6-hour and 50-minute ride.

These high-speed trains promise to offer travelers an efficient and comfortable ride, dramatically reducing travel time between these two key cities. The route change reflects the growing demand for efficient and convenient travel options in the region, which will certainly benefit both domestic and international tourists, as well as business travelers.

Boost to Tourism and Business Connectivity

Hong Kong, known for its bustling urban atmosphere, iconic skyscrapers, and vibrant lifestyle, attracts millions of tourists each year. With the addition of this high-speed train connection, travel from Hong Kong to Hangzhou will become more accessible, making it easier for tourists to explore Hangzhou’s rich history, scenic beauty, and diverse cultural offerings. Hangzhou, famous for its West Lake, tea plantations, and ancient temples, is poised to benefit significantly from the surge in visitors who will now be able to reach it in under seven hours.

Furthermore, this new train service is expected to facilitate greater business interactions between the two cities. Hong Kong’s status as a global financial hub and Hangzhou’s rise as a leading tech and cultural center makes this new link an invaluable asset for professionals traveling between the two locations. The improved travel connectivity will likely lead to an increase in trade, conferences, and other professional exchanges, strengthening the economic ties between Hong Kong and Hangzhou.

Impact on the Broader Travel Industry

The high-speed train initiative between Hong Kong and Hangzhou highlights the ongoing push for greater regional integration within China. It underscores the growing investment in transportation infrastructure designed to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times between major cities. With the introduction of this high-speed train, travelers will be able to seamlessly travel between two of China’s most dynamic cities, and this could influence other regions to explore similar initiatives to boost tourism and facilitate business.

This train service is expected to ease congestion in other transportation sectors, such as flights and buses, as it provides an alternative means of travel that is faster, more comfortable, and more environmentally friendly than many other forms of long-distance transportation. As more travelers opt for high-speed trains, airlines and bus operators will likely face increased competition, encouraging them to enhance their own services to remain attractive options for consumers.

Broader Global Implications

For international travelers, this improved service between Hong Kong and Hangzhou may serve as a model for future high-speed train routes in other parts of the world. As regions look to reduce environmental impact and improve travel efficiency, the development of high-speed rail networks will become an increasingly important component of global travel infrastructure. This shift toward high-speed trains could lead to a broader reduction in carbon emissions from the travel industry, offering more sustainable alternatives to long-distance air travel.

The expansion of high-speed rail networks can also encourage international tourism to regions that were previously difficult to access. Travelers who would traditionally visit only one city may now be enticed to explore multiple destinations within a region, thanks to the convenience of high-speed rail.

The introduction of the Hong Kong to Hangzhou high-speed train connection represents a significant step forward in improving travel connectivity, not only between two of China’s most iconic cities but also for travelers in the broader region. As high-speed trains continue to redefine the way people travel, the impact on both tourism and the global travel industry will be substantial.

Okinawa’s local government is stepping up its efforts to promote cycling in the prefecture in 2025, aiming to attract bike enthusiasts from around the world to explore the subtropical islands’ routes that offer year-round accessibility

A group of local cycling specialists, including the Chairman of the Okinawan Cycling Association, have already been enlisted to help with aims to bring an existing popular cycling route that circles Okinawa’s largest and main island into the ranks of Japan’s National Cycling Routes – a status with strict requirements for road safety, width and convenience for cyclists. The economic benefit of this project is predicted to be in the region of 10 billion yen.

Okinawa’s subtropical climate and spectacular scenery make it an attractive destination for cyclists, particularly in the winter months when temperatures average a comfortable 15-20 degrees. Races such as the Tour de Okinawa and All Japan Triathlon Miyakojima already attract professional athletes, but there are routes suitable for all abilities. Some of the most popular include the Ginowan Tropical Beach – Ikei Island Cycling Tour, which has the most elevation gain of all the road biking trails in the area with an ascent of 554m, and the Arashiyama – Yabu Cycling Route considered the most difficult road biking trail in Okinawa with an elevation gain of 417m.

The Kouri Bridge Cycling Tour is another popular choice with visitors, as it travels via a scenic road bridge from Okinawa’s main island to picturesque Kouri Island. Here, cyclists can discover vast fields of sugarcane and the region’s famous purple sweet potatoes, as well as Okinawa’s famous Heart Rocks landmark on Tinu Beach.

Cycling is widespread across Okinawa, including within its cities and on its smaller islands, with numerous rental companies offering a range of different bikes for visitors of all cycling abilities. Dirt bikes from the likes of Fat Bike Rental Taketomi are a popular choice in the YaeYama region, and ChuraChari bicycle-sharing e-bikes are available across the prefecture’s capital, Naha. Here, companies such as E-Charity also offer guided tours alongside equipment hire, allowing visitors to expertly explore the region’s history and culture on two wheels.

Japan Unveils Powerful New Tax-Free Policy: Here’s What Tourists Need To Know
We’ve all come across iconic images of Mt. Fuji, the Glico running man, and the bustling Shibuya Crossing lighting up our social media feeds. It’s no secret that Japan has long been a favorite travel destination for many, including Filipinos. To maintain its thriving tourism industry while enhancing oversight, Japan is introducing a revamped tax-free system that changes the way international visitors can enjoy shopping savings.

Under this new system, the current practice of immediate tax exemptions at stores will be replaced. Tourists will now pay the full amount, including taxes, at the point of purchase and later claim their refund, most likely at the airport before leaving the country. This aligns Japan’s tax refund process with systems already in place in other countries.

The updated framework is designed to minimize fraud and improve efficiency for both travelers and retailers. Although it adds an extra step to the process, visitors can still take advantage of significant savings during their shopping adventures in Japan.

How Will Japan’s New Tax-Free System for Tourists Work?

Starting in 2025, Japan will implement a new tax-free shopping system for international tourists, replacing the current practice of deducting taxes directly at checkout. The updated process introduces a refund system designed to enhance convenience and security, supported by modern technology.

How the Refund Process Works
Pay Full Price at Stores: Tourists will pay the total cost of their purchases, which includes Japan’s standard 10% consumption tax and an 8% tax for food items.
Keep Receipts: Ensure you collect and keep all receipts for eligible purchases.
Claim Refund at Departure: At the airport, submit your receipts to customs to process your tax refund. Refunds must be claimed within 90 days of purchase to confirm that the goods are leaving Japan.
Key Updates in the New System
No Minimum or Maximum Spend Limits: Previously, tourists needed to spend at least 5,000 JPY in one store in a single day to qualify for tax-free shopping, with limits between 5,000 and 500,000 JPY for consumables like food or medicine. The new system removes these restrictions, allowing unlimited tax-free purchases.
Simplified Packaging Requirements: The old rules required consumables to have specific packaging to qualify for tax exemptions, which could make shopping inconvenient. These requirements will be eliminated, streamlining the process while ensuring better control over unauthorized reselling.
Unified Categories for Goods: The separation of “general” goods (e.g., clothing) and “consumables” (e.g., food, cosmetics) may be removed, making everyday items more accessible for tourists.
This updated system aims to create a smoother shopping experience while balancing oversight and convenience for international visitors.

Japan Enhances Travel Experience with New Measures

Beyond revamping its tax-free shopping system, Japan is rolling out additional initiatives to make travel more convenient for international visitors. One key update is the introduction of a “Pre-Clearance” system. Starting with travelers from Taiwan, this system allows most entry inspections to be completed at the departure airport. By streamlining immigration processes, it aims to significantly reduce waiting times upon arrival, offering a smoother and more efficient travel experience with fewer queues.

Why Is Japan Introducing a New Tax-Free System?
The updated tax-free system addresses issues of misuse under the current framework. According to Japan Travel, some tourists exploit tax exemptions by reselling duty-free items within Japan, bypassing tax regulations. A 2022 customs survey uncovered approximately 1.85 billion JPY in unpaid taxes resulting from unverified tax-free purchases. This reform aims to curb these practices, protect tax revenues, and ensure a fair system for both visitors and the local economy.

When Does the New System Begin?
For now, tourists can continue to enjoy tax-free shopping directly at stores for eligible purchases. However, this convenience is set to change as the new system rolls out, transitioning to a refund-based process expected to take effect in 2025. Visitors planning trips should stay informed to make the most of these updates.

STARLUX Airlines of Taiwan has placed a firm order with Airbus for five more A350F freighters. This doubles an initial order from the airline last year for five of the all-new cargo aircraft. The A350F fleet will be operated by STARLUX Cargo on some of the world’s busiest freight routes.

“The cargo market is set to become a key element in our business model and will benefit from the advantages offered by Taiwan’s geographical location,” said STARLUX CEO Glenn Chai. “The A350F is the perfect choice for STARLUX, offering a similar payload-range capability as previous generation freighters, but with very significant reductions in fuel consumption and carbon emissions.”

“We thank STARLUX Airlines for its ongoing confidence in Airbus and its products,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales Commercial Aircraft at Airbus. “The A350F will fit seamlessly into the carrier’s latest generation all-Airbus fleet which offers unrivalled levels of technical and operational commonality. This second order from this fast-growing airline is another endorsement of the all-new A350F as the future game-changer in heavy lift markets.”

To date STARLUX Airlines operates a fleet of 26 Airbus aircraft including the A321neo, the A330neo and the A350-900.

Currently under development, the A350F can carry a payload of up to 111 tonnes and can fly up to 4,700 nautical miles / 8,700 kilometres. Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the aircraft will bring a reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions of up to 40% when compared to previous generation aircraft with a similar payload-range capability.

The A350F features the largest main deck cargo door in the industry, with fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers. Over 70% of the airframe is made of advanced materials, resulting in a 46 tonne lighter take-off weight than the competing derivative. The A350F is also the only freighter aircraft that will fully meet ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards, coming into effect in 2027.

At the end of November 2024, the latest generation widebody A350 Family had won 1,345 orders from 61 customers worldwide, including 55 for the all-new A350F from 10 leading cargo carriers.
