THE NEED FOR PUBLIC TOILETS

The authorities should do well to provide toilets and enhance environmental sanitation

The urge to ease oneself most often comes without much warning. When such an urge arises, it should be conveniently responded to. At present, that is not readily available in most Nigerian cities. The embarrassment that this could cause is better imagined than experienced. That is why the provision of public toilets and conveniences is an imperative in a modern society, not the least one wooing investors and tourists. Otherwise, where would a person, outside home, who suddenly feels the need to either pass urine or stool, ease themselves without debasing their human dignity?

The United Nations charge “everyone must have access to a toilet connected to a sanitary system that effectively removes and treats human waste” should be a clarion call in Nigeria. It is a common sight in many of our towns and cities to find people urinating or defecating either on the roadside or in seemingly obscure corners, sometimes in the full glare of passers-by. Since people who are hard-pressed in the public often have to ease themselves in the most inappropriate places, the health hazards posed by this repugnant habit cannot be over-emphasised.

This culture is more noticeable at motor-parks, public schools, markets, bus and train terminals, and public squares where there are either no toilets or poorly kept ones. Even some of the nation’s airports have no functional toilets. Where such facilities exist, they are poorly maintained. It is amazing how authorities at all levels should ignore such basic needs as toilets. Available statistics from the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reveal that there has been limited progress in the fight against open defecation in Nigeria.

What saddens is that the entire country is fast becoming one huge field, where people defecate, without shame, and without putting into consideration the impact of their action on the health of others. In many rural communities, people still build houses without provision for toilets, or as the case may be, latrines where waste can be emptied without others coming in contact with it. In the urban centres, the issue is pervasive. And experts have consistently warned that when large numbers of people are defecating outdoors, it’s extremely difficult to avoid ingesting human waste, either through food or water contamination or because it has been spread by flies and dust.

Agreed that the government may not be able to provide every facility needed in a city, it must however create the enabling environment to encourage the private sector to do so.

Besides, government at all levels must initiate and sustain a re-orientation campaign to educate and enlighten the people on the need for observance of basic hygiene in our communities or cities. It is the loss of this once cherished culture of cleanliness that has today made certain public places a no-go. Schools, churches, mosques and other agents of socialisation should also join in the campaign for provision of public toilets.

Against the background of reports that majority of the public facilities in Nigeria either do not have toilets or they are broken, this emblem of shame deserves urgent attention. As the world therefore marks the 2022 toilet day, the authorities must work towards removing this social impedimentin our country.

APPEAL COURT AFFIRMS SHERIFF OBOREVWORI DELTA GOVERNOR.

-DISMISSES OMO AGEGE’S PETITION.

The Court of Appeal in lagos has affirmed the election of Rt.Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as governor of Delta state.

Oborevwori ,flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP,was declared winner of the March 18,2023 Delta governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),after he secured 360,234 votes to defeat Obaisi Ovie Omo Agege of the All Progressives Congress APC ,who trailed behind with 240,229 votes.

The Delta State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba, had earlier on September 29,confirmed the election of Oborevwori as the duly elected governor of the state.

Fire Outbreak Razes Ex-President Shagari’s Family House In Sokoto

The Former President late Shehu Aliyu Shagari’s family House was razed by a fire outbreak in Sokoto on Saturday.

The late Shagari’s house located in the Gobirawa area in the Sokoto metropolis was estimated to accommodate over 20 family members

Although, the cause of the fire outbreak has not yet been ascertained and no life was lost but properties worth billions of naira were said to have been destroyed by the inferno as the fire overpowered the efforts of the good Samaritan in the area to evacuate some valuable properties and control the fire failed.

However, people booed fire service personnel for their coming to the incident late saying “Bama so”, Bama so”, which means we don’t want, we don’t want.

Alhaji Umaru Sarkin Zangon, a neighbour of the family house said the fire outbreak started around 11 a.m.rday morning and razed the entire building.

Zango stated that all efforts by the people of the area to quench the fire in the early stages before the arrival of the fire service proved abortive.

Also, Aisha Tsohon Gidan Shagari, said the fire which gutted the house of the former president further escalated to the neighbouring houses due to the lateness of the service vehicles to arrive at the incident scene on time.

She further noted that the firefighting vehicle arrived on the scene with inadequate water after had gone greater.

Attahiru Shehu Shagari, a grandson of the former president revealed that he was at home when he heard shouting of people raising awareness and seeking help, also noted that despite late arrival at the incident scene, the fire service complained of insufficient water in their possession.

Judiciary now something else — Retiring Supreme Court Justice

•Faults composition of Supreme Court panel that heard Atiku, Obi’s appeals

ABUJA—There appears to be a crack at the Supreme Court, barely 24 hours after it validated the election of President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

A retiring justice of the court, Musa Dattijo Muhammad, who reportedly pulled out from the seven-man panel that dismissed all the appeals that sought to remove President Tinubu from office, has accused the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, of abusing the powers of his office.

Justice Muhammad, who spent 47 years in active judicial service, bowed out of the apex court bench on Friday, having clocked the 70 years mandatory retirement age.

He used the opportunity of a valedictory session that was organised in his honour by the Supreme Court, to address what he observed as rots in the judiciary that have continued to affect the justice delivery system in the country.

“Through the years, I rose to become the second most senior justice of the country’s apex court and Deputy Chairperson of the National Judicial Council. “Considering the number of years I have spent in judicial service and the position I have attained by the grace of the Almighty, I feel obligated to continue the struggle for reforms for a better Judiciary and would be leaning on the earlier submissions of those who had exited before me,” Justice Muhammad stated before he descended on the CJN.

He maintained that the judiciary, as presently structured, gave so much powers to the CJN who he said usually takes decisions without consulting other justices.

His words: “As presently structured, the CJN is Chairman of the NJC which oversees both the appointment and discipline of judges, he is equally Chair of the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), the National Judicial Institute (NJI), the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) that appoints Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“In my considered opinion, the oversight functions of these bodies should not rest on an individual alone. A person with absolute powers, it is said, corrupts easily and absolutely. “As Chair of NJC, FJSC, NJI and LPPC, appointments as council, board and commitment members are at his pleasure. He neither confers with fellow justices nor seeks their counsel or input on any matter related to these bodies. He has both the final and the only say. “The CJN has power to appoint 80 percent of members of the council and 60 percent of members of FJSC. The same On the issue of membership of the panel that heard the presidential election appeals by candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, Justice Muhammad, said: “To ensure justice and transparency in presidential appeals from the lower court, all geo-political zones are required to participate in the hearing.

“It is therefore dangerous for democracy and equity for two entire regions to be left out in the decisions that will affect the generality of Nigerians. “This is not what our laws envisage. Although it can be posited that no one expected the sudden passing of Hon.

Justice Nweze JSC, yet, it has been two years and seven months since the previous justice from South-East died and no appointment was made.”

On funding and independence of the Judiciary, the retiring justice bemoaned that though the budgetary allocation for the Judiciary increased from 70billion that it was in 2015 to 165billion presently, “Justices and officers welfare and the quality of service the judiciary renders have continued to decline.”

“It may interest one to know that the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court earns more than the Justices. While she earns N1.2m per month, justices take home N751,000 in a month. “The CJN on his part takes home N400, 000 plus. The salary of a Justice, curiously, drops rather than increases when he gets the added responsibility of being a CJN. “The unjust and embarrassing salary difference between the justices and the Chief Registrar remains intriguing, to say the least.”

He noted that it was owing to allegations of corruption and perversion of justice, that informed President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to order the invasion of homes and arrest of some judges in 2016.

“Not done, in 2019 the government accosted, arrested and arraigned the incumbent Chief Justice before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged underhand conduct. “With his retirement negotiated, he was eventually left off the hook. “In 2022, a letter signed by all other justices of the Supreme Court, including the current Chief Justice, the aggrieved protested against the shabby treatment meted to them by the head of the court and the Chief Registrar.

“In the event, his lordship Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad disengaged ostensibly on grounds of ill-health.

“My lords, distinguished invitees, ladies and gentlemen, it is obvious that the judiciary I am exiting from is far from the one I voluntarily joined and desired to serve and be identified with. The institution has become something else,” Justice Muhammad lamented.

Meanwhile, earlier in the ceremony, the CJN, in his speech, paid glowing tribute to the retiring jurist who he described as a “quintessential Judicial icon with dazzling qualities and alluring stature.”

“His Lordship is one judicial officer that could be blunt, even to a fault; and is never known to be afraid to say things the way they are; and also never shies away from calling a spade by its name, irrespective of whose ox is gored,” the CJN stated. He decried that with Justice Muhammad’s exit, the apex court bench has further depleted to 10.

PDP reacts to Supreme court judgment, says apex court judgment disappointing

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed disappointment with the judgement of the Supreme Court which threw out its petition against the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the disputed February 25th, 2023 presidential election.

The party said it was appalled by the judgment of the Court in the petition which it filed alongside the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, against the declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as winners of the polls as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, said this in a statement, in Abuja, on Thursday.

He said, “The PDP and indeed majority of Nigerians are alarmed, disappointed and gravely concerned with the reasoning of the Supreme Court which the PDP believes is against the express provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, the Guideline and Regulation issued by INEC under which the election was conducted.

“The PDP asserts that it is indeed a sad commentary for our democracy that the Supreme Court failed to uphold the provisions of the law.

Instead, it trashed the expectation of the majority of Nigerians who looked up to it as a Temple of Impartiality to deliver substantial justice in the matter having regards to the laws and facts of the case.

“Nigerians earnestly expected the Supreme Court to uphold and defend the clear provisions of the 1999 Constitution in terms of qualification and minimum requirement for a winner to be declared in a Presidential election in Nigeria, especially with regards to the required statutory 25 per cent of votes in the FCT as well as issues of violation of electoral Rules and Guidelines, brazen manipulations and alterations of election results by the APC.

Nigerians are still at a loss as to how the Supreme Court condoned the serious issues of forgery, falsehood and perjury on the altar of technicalities.

“The general gloom, melancholy and sense of despondency across the country upon the delivery of the judgment is an ominous sign of eerie situation which portend grave consequences because of the disappointment embedded in the judgment.

See why Nigerians are suffering .

While I condemn the Senate for buying foreign-made SUVs, that is not why the Naira is ₦1310 to a dollar. The reason behind the sudden drop is because the Central Bank of Nigeria abruptly stopped the decades-old practice of defending the Naira with $1.5 billion every month. It is not because of any act of bad governance. It is a deliberate fiscal policy known as floating the Naira.

Before this, we were spending more money subsidising the Naira than we were spending on fuel subsidies. And as a result, we were subsidising imports. The idea behind the policy of floating the Naira is that Nigerians should change their consumption habits and buy more made in Nigeria goods. That way, the $1.5 billion a month can be spent on something more productive. It is a good policy, which all of us should support.

77 million Nigerians use MTN. Another 60 million use Airtel. That is 137 million people spending $20 million daily on data and phone calls. That money is going to South Africa and India. If those 137 million people spend on Glo, the Naira will rise.

25 million Nigerians spend an average of $15 monthly on DSTV. That is $375 million going to South Africa. Last year, Nigerians spent £25.3 million on 644,452 bottles of imported champagne. We spend $75 million on imported whisky. Those funds are leaving our economy to service the British, French and South African economies.

Nigerians also spend nearly a quarter of a billion dollars importing human hair, bleaching creams, fake eyelashes and other cosmetics. This is more than we spend importing books. The funds are going to India and Asia, and those countries are not buying made-in-Nigeria goods.

Please fact-check me on all these data.

So Paul, given these consumption habits, if you were President, would you continue to invest $1.5 billion in subsidising the Naira so your citizens can waste it on such mundane things? Perhaps not.

You can actually play a role in growing our economy. You post photos of yourself on social media wearing foreign designers and jewellery and powerful cars. Of course, it is your money, and you can do whatever you want with it. But if you are going to criticise the drop in the purchasing power of the Naira, it may not be a bad idea to lead by example and post photos of yourself with made-in-Nigeria clothes and other products once in a while. Otherwise, you will be telling your followers to do what you are not doing.

Thanks for your time, and may God bless you.

JUSTICE HELEN OGUNWUMIJU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY RECUSE HERSELF FROM THE SUPREME COURT 7-MAN PANEL
-------------
In the interest of fairness and justice and based on ethics and best global practice, Hon. Helen Ogunwumiju JSC should immidiately recuse herself from the Supreme Court Panel that will hear on Monday, 23rd Oct 2023, the Presidential Election Appeal filed by & seeking to set aside the erroneous judgment of Tsammani-led presidential election tribunal.

Helen Ogunwumiju JSC is the mother of Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN. Mr. Kehinde is currently one of APC's and Bola Tinubu's lawyers, both at the presidential tribunal and now at the Supreme Court. He will be presenting a case for judgment before his own mother.

Helen Ogunwumiju JSC is also the mother of an Ondo State sitting legislator, Mr. Otumba Moyinolorun Ogunwumiju, who won his election on the platform of APC.

Supreme Court () Justice Helen Ogunwumiju JSC can not and will not dispense justice in a case involving her family and children's interests. She will certainly be biased and will undoubtedly work for the interest of her children and family. Under these circumstances, mother justice, who was supposed to be blind would surely deliver judgment with her eyes wide open. The natural motherly instinct of protecting and defending the interest of her children will be at play in the Supreme Court.
.calling on CJN Olukayode Ariwoola and the National judicial council () to wade in immediately and replace Hon. Justice Helen Ogunwumiju from the 7-man panel and ensure she does not become a judge in her own case. This call is purely driven by ethics. There's nothing personal against Hon. Justice Helen Ogunwumiju JSC.

Why Cooking Gas Prices Are Increasing in Nigeria and Steps Being Taken by the Government to Stem the Tide

Many Nigerians are wondering why cooking gas (LPG) prices keep rising, despite Nigeria's large gas reserves. They also wonder what the federal government of Nigeria (the “FGN”) might be doing to stem this tide.

According to the now defunct Department of Petroleum Resources, Nigeria's gas reserves are 206.53 trillion cubic feet making Nigeria one of the top ten (10) countries in terms of proven gas reserves. Query then, is, why are cooking gas prices rising with international gas prices & not readily available a lot of the time.

Scarcity in the Midst of Plenty

Nigeria's gas reserves and potentials are so huge that it was once said that the gas flared in Nigeria was sufficient to generate electricity for the whole of Trinidad and Tobago for one year. However, as suggested above, the enormity of the gas reserves has not guaranteed the security of energy supply. Cooking gas, (consisting mainly of butane and some propane), is produced from processing gas and refined crude. It, therefore, requires some processing and or refining. Thus, merely having natural gas or crude does not guarantee that the country will have cooking gas, if there is the capacity and or the infrastructure to refine the requisite petroleum or process the natural gas into butane and propane.

Essentially, if there isn't sufficient infrastructure, attractive commercials, distribution capacity; a country with abundant base resources will end up importing finished products for its consumption and this will naturally impact its balance of trade and payment. Nigeria, for example, despite its huge gas reserves, in the month of August 2020, imported 71.35% of the cooking gas, consumed in the country in the period. This was, in spite of Nigeria's abundant natural gas resources. Nigeria continues to import, regularly, anywhere from 40%-60% of its cooking gas needs.

Rising International Gas Prices and Its Effects on Nigeria

Since we now know that a key reason why we import cooking gas is domestic underproduction; the query then is why gas (cooking gas) prices, are rising. The answer to that question is simple. If a country imports an international commodity from the international market then the vagaries of the international market will impact same.

Effectively, the price of cooking gas in Nigeria because a large percentage of same is imported will include cost of production of gas offshore, cost of processing same, shipping, insurance, margins- including the margins enjoyed by the middlemen in Nigeria.

Why are gas prices rising abroad, you may then ask? Answer includes the fact that demand is rebounding as economies get back to business and consumers return to pre-pandemic activities. At the same time, producers, who suffered through Covid downturn, have been slow to hike output.

Hence, there is a shortfall and once demand exceeds supply, prices surge. This is exacerbated by the closure of a number of refineries in the US because of the Hurricane Ida and gas rich Russia not making enough gas available in Europe. What all these mean again to any net importer (like Nigeria) is that the purchase price will increase. Now add those other costs like shipping, insurance, margins etc. Make matters worse, by adding logistics challenges and delays. That’s the true picture of things.

Having understood the pricing dynamics, question is what the FGN, is or has been doing to stem this tide, if any? Well, there are a number of things including ensuring that every gas producer has the obligation to reserve a portion of gas produced in Nigeria to be left for domestic sale and use.

Conclusion

It is also important to note that because cooking gas is imported even if its price does not increase in the international market, same will continue to increase if the Nigerian currency continues to devalue because more naira will be required for the same United States price of a commodity.

That said, if Nigeria continues to develop the capacity to refine and process its base natural resources, especially with the obligation to reserve some of that for domestic sale then the FGN might be able to play a serious role in stemming the tide of incessant price increases.

Saudi Arabia summons Nigeria and other OIC ministers over Israel-Palestine war

Saudi Arabia has called for an urgent ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss the escalation in Gaza.

According to reports, the meeting was summoned by the Saudi Arabia Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

The OIC includes a wide range of member states from different regions, including the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. Some prominent members include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

The OIC also has members from Africa like Nigeria and Senegal, as well as from the Balkans like Albania.

The OIC has renewed its condemnation of the Israeli military and its aggression against Gaza and said that it holds Israel responsible for ignoring international resolutions.

A report said; “Crown Prince affirmed that the Kingdom stands by the Palestinian people to achieve their legitimate rights, realize their hopes and aspirations, and achieve just and lasting peace.”

Recall on October 6, 2023, war broke out between Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist group that has controlled Gaza since 2006.

Hamas fighters fired rockets into Israel and stormed southern Israeli cities and towns across the border of the Gaza strip, killing and injuring hundreds of soldiers and civilians and taking dozens of hostages.

The attack took Israel by surprise, though the state quickly mounted a deadly retaliatory operation. One day after the October 7 attack, the Israeli cabinet formally declared war against Hamas, followed by a directive from the defense minister to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to carry out a “complete siege” of Gaza.
