This week we honor Emma Bowen, an advocate for community rights and the rights of the disenfranchised. She was president of the Foundation of Minority Interests. The group was an outgrowth of a volunteer organization, Black Citizens for Fair Media, that focused on the employment practices of broadcasters and their portrayal of blacks on television.

This week we honor Daniel “Dapper Dan” Day. The Harlem native is credited for popularizing logomania. He got his start selling reconstructed garments out of knock off designer items. Now, he currently collaborates with Gucci, one of the brand he used for his custom designs. Dapper Dan paved the way for black designers like Telfar Clemens and many others.

Today we celebrate Audre Lorde, an American poet, feminist, and civil rights activist. She dedicated both her life and creative talents toward confronting and addressing racism, classism, sexism, and homophobia. Her work paved the way for today’s LGBTQ creatives.
