✨Women & Girls in Sport week ✨
Today's inspirational girls are twins Darcey & Maisie from Dornoch Academy. They are in S2 and are involved with Golf Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Squash Sutherland Squash Club and Basketball Inverness Lions Basketball Club. Recently they have been selected for the Basketball National Academy U15 training squad!! They have 3 training days in October in Glasgow when they will find out if they have made the next training camp. The final team will be 12 players. Such a great achievement even to make the National Academy, particularly as they are U14s! 👏 Best of luck girls!

Celebrating Women and Girls in Sport Week!
Meet Charlotte, one of our incredible Bikeability Tutors and Active Schools Coordinator in Argyll and Bute, who has a passion for cycling. Read a bit more about Charlotte's journey and her message for Women and Girls below:

When growing up I used to be involved in many areas of dance but when going into secondary school these hobbies began to decline.

I got into cycling in 2019 by wanting to complete a local sportive with family and friends. From then my passion for cycling grew and that’s when I got more interested in sport in general.

Looking back, I still don’t fully understand why I dropped out and I wish I had kept sport going throughout my teenage years. This is why I am passionate about getting women and girls to find a sport they enjoy so this drop out doesn’t keep reoccurring and so they can feel the benefits of sport to their mental and physical wellbeing.

Alongside my Active Schools role, I volunteer as Women’s Officer for my local cycling club and this started because I wanted to encourage women to cycle no matter what their ability or goals were. This was also to show the social side to sport and how looking back I have made lifelong friendships through cycling.

When the opportunity came along to teach Bikeability to children and young people I thought this was a fantastic area to the job due to this being a passion and hobby of mine. I then looked to support specifically girls to cycle in order for them to gain this lifelong skill and perhaps motivate them to enjoy cycling or encourage them to try new a new sport/activity.

I then moved through the courses to then teach the course for instructors. From this I feel I can now get Bikeability out there to different areas across Argyll and Bute and get children and young people cycling in their everyday life.

Through these leadership roles I hope to inspire women and girls into sport and get them to give new hobbies a try and see if they might find something they enjoy. Trying new hobbies can positively impact your personal growth and development and I am now lucky enough to involve my passion for cycling in my career.
