If you’ve spent some time at Alice Springs hospital, you might recognise this face. Mr Peter Mitchell is one of our ngangkari traditional healers at NPY Women’s Council who provides healing treatments there! Born in 1951 in the bush near Warakurna, Mr Mitchell spent his early years living on the land learning about hunting and culture from his father and brothers. He was given his healing powers 15-20 years ago by his Tjamu and has been driving around the NPY lands helping people ever since.
If you want to learn more about our ngangkari, they are currently on SBS! Link in the comments.

LATEST APY LANDS CULTURAL BUSINESS UPDATE (New Advice - 2 March 2023)

It appears that the cultural business camps will continue until the weekend (Fregon, Mimili and Indulkana).

There are currently no road closures in effect and at this stage.

Non-Anangu staff are free to travel on the main roads. Some Anangu are unable to travel.

As noted, this phase of business looks like continuing until the weekend before there is any significant movement or travel.

It also is important to note that travel restrictions on the main road could occur at any time.

We will attempt to keep you updated on any changes.

Just remember, “If you come across Anangu involved in Business please show respect”.

APY LANDS CULTURAL BUSINESS UPDATE - 28 February 2023)

Men's Cultural Business has re-commenced on the APY Lands - Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara.

At this time business is occurring in the eastern communities of Fregon, Mimili and Indulkana.

It is requested at this stage that people show respect to people involved in business in these communities. Camps are set up on the outskirts of these communities. Please avoid these camps.

Basically, at this time, communities remain open but this could change at any time at short notice.

Once notified, the road between Indulkana and Fregon can be closed for traffic at any time. With this occurring it is recommended that any travel be limited to essential due to the possibility of the road being closed.

We must stress that at this time roads do remain open.

Once notified of any closures we will put out another update immediately.

It is understood that the group will eventually move west across the APY Lands to Western Australia.

There are currently no road closures.

Just remember, "If you come across Anangu involved in Business please show respect".

Chronically underfunded and in jeopardy of closing; remote Youth Programs are not "just basketball and football," they help children from remote communities, who are among the most economically disadvantaged in Australia, aim high. Youth programs play an important role in preventing youth offending. They “do everything”, NPYWC youth programs offer case management, support young people to access traineeships and jobs and are often only extra-curricular opportunities for young people to learn, upskill and access sport.
