In this age of globalization and information sharing, media has assumed a very special place in human lives. If it is said media today is as important as food and water it would not be an exaggeration in any way. There is no denial that media is playing a very significant role to make the world smaller and connected. Through various mediums of media whether it is radio, television, newspaper or in
ternet, we are able to connect with large number of people around the world. In this part of the world where an absolute majority of the people doesn’t have direct access to advanced communication sources like satellite televisions and internet and still relying on print media there was need of an English language magazine from capital city of Azad Jammu & Kashmir to connect the people and the state with the rest of the world so that their voices could be heard globally and people here could know what is happening in other parts of the world. The answer is that at present over a half dozen newspapers are being published from Muzaffarabad but none of them is in English language which is one of the major sources of global communication. The need of an English newspaper was particularly felt in the wake of devastating Earthquake of 2005 when hundreds of foreign government dignitaries, officials of humanitarian organizations and philanthropist poured into the region to asses the loss of the earthquake and help the victims of catastrophe but they did not find any newspaper in an international language to get accurate and reliable information. In this backdrop it was decided to launch a periodical under the title of AWAM with the clear aim and objectives to highlight the real economic and social problems of the people and disseminate the same to the targeted readers that include top government functionaries, policy makers, institutions responsible for nation building and national and international development agencies. The AWAM will highlight the political, social and economic issues of the area through in depth analytical articles, write ups and investigative reports. The AWAM for you and your opinion pieces on public interest issues would be highly appreciated.
