You know those videos in which helpless animals are "rescued"? Well, many of these videos are fake ... healthy animals are being harmed in order to stage a "rescue."
Don't believe everything you see ... and do not share anything you don't know to be true. Check out this podcast to see how to tell the difference between compassionate rescues and fake ones that actually abuse animals.

A great story about going vegan for the planet ... it's not about being perfect but about changing the world by doing your best.

Veganism doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Adopting a mostly plant-based diet but maintaining flexibility with friends and family can help make a climate impact.

At the growing rate of human population, we're going to need to make huge changes to avoid global hunger. And there is a very simple solution: "The United Nations estimates we could feed an additional 3.5 billion more people simply by growing crops for human consumption on the land that is currently used to grow feed crops for farmed animals."

This post from A Well-Fed World outlines how the ONLY way to keep feeding humans is by eating more plants. Check it out ... and start eating more plants TODAY. Our future depends on it. (The animals will thank us, too.)

A plant-based food system would feed billions more people while slashing land use and emissions.

Don’t miss the latest Our Hen House podcast, featuring two amazing reporters’ investigation into California’s underground market for puppies. And, Midge & John talk about DEVILS ISLAND at the top of the show!

California’s ban on the sale of puppies in pet stores solved the puppy mill issue for the state, right? Not so fast! Thanks so much to Amy and Carrie for a fabulous chat on this wonderful podcast!

As climate change and environmental issues have become ever present in our minds, so has the rise of . This week we talk to Midge Raymond and John Yunker who are on the forefront of this sub-genre.

Writers Midge and John founded Ashland Creek Press , a small independent publisher that focuses on stories about the environment with a special emphasis on animals, 13 years ago. Literary agents often had trouble placing Midge and John's respective books with traditional publishers because eco-fiction wasn't really "a thing" those publishers spent resources on.

Jumping ahead a decade, eco-fiction is now a big "thing" because the topic of the environment it is a top tier issue even in presidential campaigns.

Midge and John talk to us about their press but also about the recent release of their eco-thriller DEVILS ISLAND that they co-wrote together. Their novel is set in Tasmania amongst the endangered and much-maligned Tasmanian devil. While this is a conservation-leaning novel, it is also a suspense story about a naturalist tour that goes very wrong, involving a disappearance and death.

We also talk about some cool things happening with the in just a few weeks, Amy's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice experience, and how Carrie and Amy have different feelings about coming in second place during trivia games.

These photos may be the saddest images ever ... but what will it take for humans to take action on climate change? This photographer is among many artists hoping to change the world for the better.

In this week's issue of our environmental newsletter, we look at how artists hope to inspire climate action with sometimes graphic images, see how this year's wildfire season really compares to past years, and hear some strategies for dealing with climate anxiety.

Writers, check out the latest theme issue at Bellevue Literary Review!

Attention, writers! Starting Sunday, September 1st, BLR will be accepting poetry, fiction, and nonfiction for our 2025 theme issue. 📝 https://blreview.org/submit/

A bit about the theme, Animalia: 🐘
Health is not simply a human concept. The experience of inhabiting a body, with all its flaws and failings, is universal among all creatures. Most species—including our own—are highly interdependent. Even well into the digital age, animals remain an integral part of our daily lives. We elbow into each other’s homesteads, psyches, and microbiomes, affecting each other’s health. Animals can be sources of fear as well as sources of comfort. Animals can be teachers and they can be resources that we exploit.

For “Animalia,” BLR invites submissions that explore how health and healing both transcend and interconnect species, and what this can teach us about being human.

We look forward to reading your work! 😊

This is a terrific and insightful look at the true costs of our food, environmentally. If people had to pay the ACTUAL costs of their food, we would all be vegans!

Damage to the natural world isn’t factored into the price of food. But some governments are experimenting with a new way of exposing the larger costs of what we eat.
