Moishe left us earlier this year, and this is the first time in 15 years that we've done a 9 Days of Jerry event without him. It feels weird and wrong - but playing one of his shows feels good and right.

B"H, at last Tisha b'Av is drawing to a close across the world. As per our minhag, we've been off the air since Rosh Chodesh Av. But just as the dawn follows darkness, Radio Free Nachlaot "turns on" again at 1pm Jerusalem time on the 10th of Chodesh Menachem Av, 5784 - Wednesday, August 14, 2024, with our 15th Annual 9 Days of Jerry!

Jerry Garcia z"l

Born on 18 Av, under a waning Gibbous Moon, the Sign of the Teacher, on Shabbos Ekev 5702 (1 Aug. 1942).
Died on 13 Av, as the Moon approached her fullness, the week of Tu b'Av, 5755 (9 Aug. 1995).

Our teacher, our rebbe, our friend, the reluctant leader of the band, whose music was his Torah and whose Torah remains in our hearts and on recordings and etched into our communal memories.

May his memory and his music continue to be a blessing.

Today is 17 Tammuz, the start of the 3 Weeks. I’d say that in my adult life, the Jewish People inside and outside of Israel have never needed the spiritual squeezing of “between the narrows” like we do this year. Squeeze us Lord, like a tube of toothpaste, squeeze all the baseless hatred, lack of faith, and spiritual slumber right out of us!
A housekeeping note: Radio Free Nachlaot’s 15th Annual 9 Days of Jerry is “delayed” this year until 14 August because Tisha b’Av (as per our Minhag and the Hebrew Calendar).
Wishing everyone an uncomfortable 3 Weeks! If you’re comfy and complacent and don’t think you need the toxicity squeezed out of you, you’re doing something wrong.
But after the squeezing comes the comforting, and the intimacy, and the enhanced spiritual connectivity. That’s the whole point.
