(HUNTINGDON) - You may notice a new team, walking and working, in and around Huntingdon. An individual has just returned from the Leader Dogs program in Rochester Hills, Michigan, with their Leader Dog. Leader Dogs provide independent travel for thousands of people around the world. Knowing this individual and their Leader Dog, I wanted to know how to react when around them. I would like to share some of what I've learned. When you encounter a leader dog, you can help the Leader Dog and their handler travel safely by following some simple suggestions.

When you meet a Leader Dog, remember:
- A Leader Dog is a working dog and should not be petted or called without its handler’s permission. A Leader Dog is on duty when in harness, even when sitting or lying down.

- Avoid making eye contact with a working dog. Eye contact is still a form of attention and may distract the dog from its' work.

- Do not take hold of the Handler, the Leader Dog or its harness without permission. If it looks like the guide dog handler needs assistance, ask the handler before taking any action.

- When providing directions to a guide dog handler, speak to the person, not the dog. Be sure to use specific, easy-to-follow indicators like, “Go north two blocks, then east,” or “Turn left at the next curb and go two blocks".

- Please do not feed a Leader Dog, whether it is on or off duty. Leader Dogs follow a veterinarian-prescribed diet.

- A Leader Dog team has the right of way and, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, is required to be allowed access everywhere the public is allowed.

I am excited for the independence and freedom this Leader Dog will provide for this friend. Thanks for taking a few moments to learn, along with me, the proper way to interact with this team.

HUNTINGDON....This Just In.....
You will 1st hear the St. James Lutheran Church keeping time.
At 36 seconds into the video, from the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church bell tower, Huntingdon's town clock and bell were marking time and sounding out that it's 9:00 o'clock. A sound we haven't heard in a long, long time.
As the bell was ringing, it struck me that a generation has never heard this iconic time piece.
