International Mountain Day was created by the United Nations in 2003 to raise awareness for the importance of mountains to our world. 15% of the world’s population calls mountains home, as well as 50% of the world’s biodiversity. The importance of mountains for agriculture, energy, fresh water supply, and many more aspects of everyday life cannot be overstated.

What does this have to do with Monadnock? Our studio was named for this geological feature- a mountain standing high above the surrounding terrain. We also share a name with a mountain in our neighboring state of New Hampshire.

For Mount Monadnock and all the other mountains in our lives, we encourage you to practice awareness of our changing environment, and of the steps that we can take to promote sustainability and preservation of our natural landscapes.

International Human Rights Day, celebrated each year on December 10th, commemorates the day in 1948 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.This year’s theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now” focuses on how the pursuit of human rights is a pathway to peace and equality.

As we look towards National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which falls on December 7th, we wanted to highlight this multi-screen theater experience that we produced for the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. This temporary exhibit was installed for the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, back in 2016. Here you see a rendering of the theater’s design and a segment of our projection.

Today we celebrate the National Day of Listening, a day that reminds us of the importance of connecting with family and friends. Through meaningful conversations, we create and preserve memories; through the act of listening, we form deeper bonds. Recording stories and conversations is a great way to create an oral history archive for you and your loved ones, to share now and in the future. By inviting friends and families to tell their stories, you invite them into your world, connecting your history with theirs. These kinds of stories – the personal, human side of history – speak to us and what we do here at Monadnock. We believe that listening to a person recount their own story is one of the most meaningful ways to engage with history and community, and we’re grateful that sharing personal histories with our museum communities is both our job and our passion.

Today is World Children’s Day, a time to celebrate children worldwide and help promote their wellbeing, something that Monadnock strives to do in every museum project – from history museums to presidential libraries to cultural and science centers. As museum experts, we believe it’s our job to advocate for kids and their right to a factual and enriching education. The 2024 Annual Survey of Museum-Goers found that most parents also believe museums play a vital part in that equation, filling in the gaps that schools don’t adequately cover. Together with our museum partners, we find ways to reach every child in meaningful ways, on World Children’s Day – and every day.

We are excited to welcome our new Producer, Denali Tiller, to Monadnock! Denali comes to us with 10 years of experience as a documentary filmmaker, editor, and story producer. Her work has been seen on PBS, Netflix, Lifetime, and Hulu. She has a passion for collaborative, human-centered storytelling and is excited to expand her work into the 3 dimensions of the museum and experiential design world.

Last week, Alan, Sarah, Nilou, and Monadnock’s newest producer, Denali, attended in NYC. Over two inspiring days of studio visits and presentations we explored the future of experiential media design. It was a great opportunity to connect with new and old friends, and potential collaborators, and to see how our field is embracing the latest technologies. We left feeling incredibly proud of the innovative, cutting-edge design Monadnock continues to deliver— and, now more than ever, in our dedication to featuring human-centered storytelling with deep, meaningful impact for our clients and their visitors.

This is an exciting opportunity to learn and to connect with colleagues and support the growth and advancement of Native cultural institutions. If you’ll be there, say hello!

November is National Native American Heritage Month.The month is dedicated to reflecting on and lifting up the history of Indigenous people throughout American History. We at Monadnock love to celebrate and uplift unheard voices, and work to represent Indigenous stories through many of our projects.

We worked closely with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma to create multimedia experiences for their cultural center, telling the tribe’s story in their own words to fully convey their culture and worldview. Immersive theaters and complex projections work to bring the stories of the Choctaw people to life.

Chief Gary Batton of the Choctaw Nation said this of the center: “Often the Native American story is documented by non-tribal members. This is the first time in our history that we get to tell our story from our perspective.”

We encourage you this month to find an event, exhibition, or other experience that can bring you closer to these celebrations of Indigenous culture and history!

was unforgettable in beautiful Baton Rouge! Last week was all about recharging with museum colleagues, insightful sessions & energizing events. From the powerful Opening Plenary and late-night connections at Table Talk, to exploring Baton Rouge’s cultural scene and enjoying the warm sense of community, Alan and Sarah left feeling uplifted and ready to take on new projects. Huge thanks to everyone who made it happen—local teams, sponsors, and each attendee who brought their passion. It was a joy seeing old friends and making new ones.

October 24th is United Nations Day, set to recognize the anniversary of 1945 ratification of the UN Charter that brought the organization into being. Early in its existence, the United Nations sought to develop commissions to promote economic and social protections as well as the protection of human rights.

As the elected chair of the Human Rights Commission, Eleanor Roosevelt addressed issues such as civil rights, education and poverty. She was instrumental in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a duty she took very seriously.

Despite difficulties due to domestic and international tensions, Eleanor Roosevelt’s tenacity and utter dedication to the document led to its passing on December 10, 1948.

Monadnock's graphic designer Nilou Maleki recently wrapped up an incredible experience at the SEGD Dallas! She left the conference feeling energized by the insightful speaker sessions, inspiring presentations, and the amazing awardees' projects. She was delighted to be connected with creative minds and industry leaders, to catch up with friends, and most of all was excited to bring these fresh ideas back to Monadnock and continue pushing boundaries in designing experiences!
