clarity - burnout part II.

I’m beyond stoked to share the second part of this project with ! We created this using two of their new Pavotube II 15XR lights, along with two waterproof housings. We set up both lights in stands on the sand and backlit the waves crashing over a stone wall barrier to create the images in this set. Honestly there is something so spooky about sitting in the dark hearing the wave coming and not knowing if it’ll be tiny or DRENCH you, but we had such a fun time creating these. These products are so easy to use and helped us light this set perfectly to create the ambience we needed to bring this story together. I’m going to be sharing a behind the scenes breakdown of how we achieved these images and how helped us overcome creative burnout to create art. I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks.

burnout - part I.

I’ve been wanting to tell an abstract story about the effects of creative burnout for a long time, and once I began writing and planning, I knew we’d need some powerful lighting to help bring the story to life. We created this set in collaboration with , using two of their new Pavotube II 15XR lights, along with two waterproof housings. These products are so easy to use and helped us light this set perfectly to create the ambience we needed to bring this story together. We were able to key light subjects, highlight backdrops and create glow in the water. I’m going to be sharing a behind the scenes breakdown of how we achieved these images and how helped us overcome creative burnout to create art. I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks. Hopefully this inspires you to get out and create something today. ✨

I’m so grateful that agreed to be the subject in this, even though it may have been a new experience and slightly out of his comfort zone in moments. He absolutely nailed it and is the reason this was possible.

I asked to come and help me shoot a concept one night two years ago. We ended up working to make the vision come to life for a few hours and it just wasn’t clicking properly. After goofing around and almost giving up, we set a light out on my balcony and shot these as it poured rain. It’s funny because initially I had no interest in them, but here we are two years later; I’ve finally edited them and they’re some of my favourite simple portraits the two of us have worked on.

Playing around with more editing and stylizing images. I’ve been trying to focus on letting creativity come when it’s ready and put less expectations and parameters on myself. So far it’s been a fun learning curve and has led to a lot of new forms of mixing techniques that I’ve learned across different disciplines.

This spot requires a two hour golf cart ride across the island of San Pedro, with about 30/40 minutes along a sandy beach path to reach, and wow is it worth it. The drive here felt like an adventure in and of itself, and it’s definitely a fun experience when you haven’t done it before. Once we hit the sandy path along the beach, we were in awe of how gorgeous the island is. I’m glad we got some shots out and can’t wait to share a few more!

We’re headed back somewhere warm at the end of this week, and I’m so excited to swim in some more stunning spots like this one. happy belated earth day ✨

Another one from a few years back in Tofino. I’ve always really liked how simple this shot is. A nice little reminder each photo doesn’t have to be the most incredible thing you’ve created to have it mean something. Hope everyone is having a lovely start to their week ✨

We’re headed out to the mountains on a fun little adventure for the next few days this afternoon. It’ll be really nice to get to spend some full days out while the weather is getting a bit warmer ✨

Luke has never looked so good.

Luke is my car. For reference.

Shot these back in 2021 on my first trip out to Tofino with the JRNY squad. We woke up to a chillier morning (most mornings) and when it started pouring rain we decided to get some photos of the car for portfolio pieces. This is such a testament to how conditions can make or break photos. I was less experienced then; both in camper and in post, and I hardly had to touch these. The rain and location did most of the work to make these as fun as they are, and we know I love a good moody shoot spot. I wish I had BTS video of how wet all the gear got though; definitely some risky business and garbage bag rigs on this one.

day to night

After a gorgeous sunset and I pulled out a sleeping bag on top of the knub, grabbed a snack and waited for the stars to come out. There’s something about being in the mountains at night that commands respect. It’s a peaceful experience with an edge of uncertainty. I think being in these places really reminds me of how small we are, and while it’s exciting to be experience, it acts as a reminder of how we don’t belong there in the same way that the animals and the natural world does. This feeling is what keeps bringing me back. This awareness of how something so stunning can still be so dangerous and untouched. I think it makes me appreciate the time I’ve been given out there creates moments that won’t be taken for granted.

We followed this up by running back to the campsite yelling nonsense in hopes we wouldn’t catch one of the resident grizzlies on our way 🥲🥲

if you needed a reminder to stop putting something off, or finally start that creative project you’ve been thinking about, or motivate yourself to pursue something new you’ve always wanted to - this is it.

I’ve been slowly getting better at l minimizing procrastination in my work life and it’s finally bleeding over into my creative work. Sometimes it just takes one small burst of inspiration to get going on a task and it’s becoming a more regular part of my day now that I’m focusing on finding that inspiration in smaller moments.

What’s something you’re getting after recently that you may have put off in the past?

Having the opportunity to shoot photos and video underwater for the first time in Belize this year was a dream come true. and I partnered with to show off their underwater housing and shoot everything from subjects to wildlife to landscapes. Can’t wait to share more very very soon! In the meantime, here is a shot I was PSYCHED about because ever since I’ve starting seeing underwater images over the past 5-7 years I’ve always wanted to be in a frame like this.

little guy, big world

Except this is a photo of and he is definitely not a little guy once you get up close. He’s actually quite tall. Very glad he ran ahead on our ice caves trip to make shots like this one possible! I’ve spent a lot of time in the Rockies winter hiking, but this valley leading up to the cave was one of the most stunning I’ve seen. The light just hits different with snow 🤷‍♀️

After two days of snowstorm, and I woke up to a beautiful sunny third day at Assiniboine. We spent the day by Lake Magog before heading up to shoot sunset and Astro in the evening. Definitely the most memorable way I’ve ever spent a birthday and the most incredible place I’ve been lucky enough to see. Happy to say it produced one of my favourite photos ever as well! (Let be real; there’s probably way more than one).

I had a lot of fun with this one and I’m really stoked about how it came out. I’ve been allowing myself a lot more creative freedom when playing around with edits and mixing media lately. It’s really helped me find passion in old projects that where I lost that and I find myself getting excited about images that I wouldn’t normally. I’ve definitely realized that the times I feel most motivated creating are when I’m mixing tools and techniques I’ve learned across industries, and I’ve been so inspired by seeing so many other talented artists doing the same before me.

Happy to be back in Calgary and right back into a busy schedule. I’m grateful for everything I have going on and I’m finding that time away has really given me a fresh perspective on how I’m handling balancing everything. I really needed time to strip everything back and start small before I felt capable of handling a heavier schedule. For me, it’s really come down to simply daily routines and reminders, personal time with and friends, and asking myself what’s important. I used to think it would be silly to schedule in personal tasks or time with friends, but having those sections blocked off has made everything much more manageable. I’m able to put energy into the things I love AND accomplish goals so that I don’t feel guilty doing one or the other.

I’m curious to hear what tricks and habits work for you when trying to keep everything balanced in your life! (Let’s go overthinkers I’m looking at you)
