As we note the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action today, we're proud to spotlight a key project with United Nations Mine Action Service UNMAS in 🇮🇶. Our comprehensive awareness campaign reached 68 locations, educating people about explosive hazards and promoting safe reporting mechanisms 💣🛡️.

Thanks to our efforts in collaboration with local mine action وزارة البيئة العراقية / دائرة شؤون الالغام - Dma and Civil Defence unit مديرية الدفاع المدني العامة we've processed 83 online reports and numerous hotline calls, leading to the successful clearance of 8 mines in diverse areas 🌍.

We leveraged influencers, emotional video material, and visual content to drive engagement and awareness, supported by multilingual dialogues and precise GPS targeting 🗣️📍.

This session is the first among a series of interviews hosted by our team - under “CoLab for Change Initiative" - with experts and partners bringing about impact in the development sector, through strategic communications.

In our talk with Philip Hazou, we will shed the light on the importance of understanding the complexities of communication within challenging contexts, accounting for ethical considerations, post-conflict narratives, and cross-cultural nuances to drive tangible change on the ground.

About Philip Hazou:

Currently heading the digital unit at UNICEF MENA Regional Office, Philip has over 20 years of experience in the fields of communication and digital production and working in several high-risk locations in the Middle East.

He started his journey as a film producer/director, producing several TV films and radio soap operas funded by USAID and the UN. In 2004, after the fall of the Iraqi regime, Philip joined the UN Electoral Division to produce a nationwide voter education campaign in Iraq and continued to work there for six years as a full-time UN expert to build the graphic design and production department and supervise a team of more than 100 employees in the field of public outreach in the Iraq High Commission for Elections (IHEC).

Following the Syria crisis, he joined UNICEF as an international communications expert to lead the production of multimedia content and tell the story of the Syrian refugees, focusing on children.

Philip established the first in-house digital production unit within the communications section at UNICEF’s MENA Regional Office, and helped establish digital capabilities in almost every MENA country office. He lead regional campaigns, film and social media audiovisual productions such as the “Heartbeat Song” that was translated into more than 8 languages.

As part of our partnership with the European Union Delegation to Jordan to support its cultural diplomacy efforts in Jordan, we celebrated a successful 34th round of the European Film Festival, co-organized with the European Union National Institutes. Hosted under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Rym Ali, the 2-week festival aimed at bringing Jordanians and Europeans together to open up a space for intercultural cooperation, diversity, exchange and dialogue.
