Eighty-four-year-old Joynacharan Bathari from Dima Hasao district has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri Award this year for his remarkable contributions to the field of Dima Hasa folk music.
The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, announced the prestigious Padma Shri Award on the eve of the 76th Republic Day, recognizing distinguished personalities from various states.
Joynacharan Bathari is known as the ‘Joy of Dimasa’.

In this ancient practice, black sesame seeds undergo a labor-intensive yet fascinating process:
Sun drying : Sesame seeds are first dried in sunlight.
Toasting and softening: The seeds are lightly toasted and mixed with warm water to make them pliable.
Pounding into paste: The softened seeds are then pounded into a fine paste.
Cane pouch preparation: The paste is placed inside a special pouch made from cane.
Thuliphong setup: The pouch is positioned between a split log, known as Thuliphong.
Rihmin tightening: Two poles, called Rihmin, are used to tighten the split log, applying pressure on the pouch.
Oil extraction: As the pouch is compressed, the sesame oil is released.
This traditional method, though time-consuming and physically demanding, showcases the ingenuity and perseverance of our ancestors.
