My son, David Roberts, died on January 20th, 2013. That was two days after he became a victim of extremely catastrophic abusive head trauma while he was in the care of his two daycare providers. The providers were licensed by the state AND the military, and we were told that they had cleared their background checks. To most people that means they didn't have a criminal record. However, one of the
two providers (it's a husband and wife team), was convicted of felony residential burglary, at least one malicious mischief charge, and had a documented anger management and alcohol problem. The husband wasn't even using his legal name. For the state and military to tell parents that the daycare providers someone is considering to care for their children have cleared background checks but in fact have any number of 35 serious crimes and felonies on the Washington Director's List (WAC 170-06-0120) is inherently wrong. The Director's List includes, but is not limited to, residential burglary, stalking, malicious mischief, prostitution, burglary, assault 3 and assault 4, custodial assault, custodial sexual misconduct, promoting prostitution and unlawful imprisonment. These are not minor offenses that the state is allowing. Parents deserve to have all of the facts and information in order to be able to make an educated decision on childcare. No parent should be forced to essentially play Russian Roulette with their child's life. Background check results should be readily available and not censored. If a parent still wants to trust a person with their child then that is their own choice. However, most parents would not do that. Parents have a right to complete transparency when it comes to the safety of their children. To require more qualifications and tighter background check guidelines for even DOG GROOMERS is absolutely insane.
