REMEMBERING MIKE LANG: Monica's stepson, prolific Hollywood studio pianist Mike Lang, passed away Friday, August 5, at age 80. From the mid-1960s, Mike contributed to scores by many great film composers, including John Williams (CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN), Jerry Goldsmith (GREMLINS, THE RUSSIA HOUSE), John Barry (BODY HEAT), Henry Mancini (10) and Lalo Schifrin (the Oscar-nominated THE COMPETITION and THE STING II, which was produced by Mike's father, MCA/Universal executive Jennings Lang). Mike also produced several albums for Monica in the 1980s-90s. For additional highlights from Mike's remarkable list of some 2,000 film and TV credits and top jazz and pop recording contributions — among them albums by Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, John Denver, Barbra Steisand and Frank Zappa — please see the obituary from VARIETY linked in the comments below. THE TCM CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL makes its eagerly awaited return to Hollywood, CA, this weekend, April 21-24. At Club TCM at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Saturday, April 23, 5-6 p.m., the two authors of the acclaimed recent book LETTERS FROM HOLLYWOOD — Rocky Lang, son of singer-actor Monica Lewis and MCA/Universal production executive Jennings Lang, and Barbara Hall — will discuss how they selected the many fascinating letters, memos and telegrams reproduced on the pages of their book and explore some of their favorite pieces from the collection. They will be joined by special guests who will share excerpts from letters they contributed and memories of their famous family members' lives and careers. A VERY SPECIAL TREAT FOR MONICA'S FANS (and any Hollywood history buff): This year's virtual Cinecon Classic Film Festival, launching Sept. 3, will include a screening of Monica's most rarely seen motion picture appearance — and she is The Star of the show! MAKE MINE MONICA, a delightful 1949 entry in the Paramount Pacemaker series of short promotional films, which were originally presented theatrically, has been discovered, restored and preserved from its original nitrate film stock. In addition to Monica, who performs several songs in the approximately 10 1/2-minute biographical production, the film features two of her best and most supportive pals: Ed Sullivan, who mentioned her frequently in his newspaper column and invited her onto the first broadcast of The Ed Sullivan Show in 1948, and top New York City disc jockey Martin Block of "Make Believe Ballroom" radio fame. Monica's son, Rocky Lang, a producer and acclaimed entertainment historian (LETTERS FROM HOLLYWOOD), will introduce the presentation to the Cinecon audience... and the 21st century.
