This week's posting is yet another gem published as part of SanCtuS' Villa-Lobos cycle. It features the 1936 recording of the song "Guriatã", sung by soprano Beate Rosenkreutzer, accompanied by the composer. The recording was published as part of the SanCtuS CD "Villa-Lobos Plays Villa-Lobos", released in 1998, with the kind support of the Villa-Lobos Museum, then under the direction of Turíbio Santos, helped by a wonderful staff, which included Marcelo Rodolfo. Our sincere thanks go to the Museum's dedicated Directors and staff troughout the years and to the present staff as listed below:

Luiz Octávio Mendes de Oliveira Castro - Director of the Villa Lobos Museum

Pedro Henrique Belchior Rodrigues - Head of the Cultural Affairs Technical Division, himself an expert in cultural affairs.

Bianca Freitas, Danielle Soares and Juliana Amado - Technical Division

Hugo Alvarenga and José Ricardo Alberto - Administrative Division

The present posting is an homage to Nelson Freire, who sadly left us six month ago.

These early adolescent recordings of the celebrated Brazilian pianist (at age 12), remastered with audio restoration, feature the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, op. 73 ("Emperor") recorded “live”, during the final round of the 1st INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION OF RIO DE JANEIRO (August, 1957), with Freire as soloist, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro, conducted by Nino Stinca. The CD also includes a Chopin recital, recorded at a recording studio, a few days after the competition.

According to Nelson Freire's wish, these recordings were released by SanCtuS Recordings in 2012, as part of the album "Rites of Passage", with sleeve-notes written by Gilda Oswaldo Cruz and Alain Lompech. We are most grateful for their contributions.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH
The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II
2022
Following the enthusiastic reception of ‘Book 1’, Trevor Pinnock continues to explore the summit of Bach’s intellectual and contrapuntal mastery with his first recording of ‘The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2’. Among his celebrated recordings are Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Handel’s Messiah and Concerti Grossi, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, The Harmonious Blacksmith, Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Partitas. Throughout his interpretations Pinnock remains true to his core principles: favouring musicality and inspiration above musical orthodoxy. Achieving an exceptional reputation as a conductor, chamber musician and harpsichordist he has received enthusiastic critical acclaim.

(Text below in English and Portuguese)
According to various sources, Easter, Passover and Ramadan overlap this weekend for the first time in 33 years. In times of much need for peace and renewal, SanCtuS shares a precious recording made in 2000, during times of peace, hope and prosperity in Kiev,
Ukraine. The music recorded brings to life the spiritual music by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych (1877-1922), set to the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom.
A passage of this Liturgy, enhanced by the hair-raising basso-profondo voice of Volodymyr Hrytsyuk, states: ”For peace in the world, for the good order of God’s holy churches and for the unity of all”. May the ecumenical spirit of Mykola Leontovych’s piece Velyka Ektenyia (Great Ectenia), beautifully performed by The National Academic Choir of the Ukraine “DUMKA”, under the direction of chorus-master Yevhen Savchuk,
permeate the world, today, and shed light and peace.

Excerpts in four languages of the 34-page booklet of the album For Your Spirit (SCS 023) are shared within the vídeo.

Happy Easter and joyous holidays to all!

hoje, e ilumine .

Trechos em quatro idiomas do encarte de 34 páginas do álbum For Your Spirit (SCS 023) são compartilhados dentro do vídeo.

SANCTUS HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK: ELSIE HOUSTON SINGS
BIÁ-TÁ-TÁ BY HEKEL TAVARES:

In 1941, Elsie Houston recorded for Victor several songs based on Brazilian folklore. 55 years later, SanCtuS Recordings was, to the best of our knowledge, the first label to release those songs on CD, remastered and enhanced with the audio restoration means of the mid 1990s. In order to share the precious legacy with a wider public, the album "Rare Recordings of Songs from Brazil, Russia and United States" (SCSH 004), includes an illustrated and informative booklet of 23 pages, in four languages (Portuguese, English, French and German), with sleeve-notes by Richard Gate, a freelance writer who wrote, amongst others, for the Classical Recordings Quarterly. The CD received excellent reviews.

Among the songs, Elsie Houston gives a charming interpretation of Hekel Tavares' "Coco de Minha Terra" (alternative title: "Biá-Tá-Tá"), which reflects folkloric traditions of the Northeastern states of Brazil, where the stomping steps of the "coco" dance and the refrain-verse format of the song evoke a mixture of African and indigenous Brazilian influences. Houston is accompanied bu Pablo Miguel on the piano. The lyrics are by Jorge d'Altavilla. More information on Elsie Houston is made available within the video.

For those who haven't yet subscribed to the SanCtuS YouTube channel we invite you to do so, in order not to miss the weekly postings which offer a broad musical and cultural journey, inspired on highlights from the SanCtuS Recordings' catalogue.

ELSIE HOUSTON - Featured artist of the week at SanCtuS

In 1996, SanCtuS Recordings was, to the best of our knowledge, the first label to release on CD, recordings made in 1941 by Elsie Houston, for Victor, with audio optimized within the possibilities of the time. For greater reach in the dissemination of this precious legacy, with roots in Brazilian folklore, the SanCtuS album included an illustrated and informative booklet of 23 pages, in four languages (Portuguese, English, French and German), with notes by Richard Gate, a freelance writer who wrote, amongst others, for the Classical Recordings Quaterly.

The edition received excellent reviews in specialized magazines, including in Brazil, where the launch had the privilege of being featured on a full page by the journalist, author, translator and highly respected Brazilian music critic Irineu Franco Perpetuo, in the former Brazilian Classic CD magazine. In gratitude for the received support and to celebrate this week's International Women's Day, SanCtuS shares the recording of the song “Foi Uma Noite Calmosa”, sung by Elsie Houston as featured in the SanCtuS release "Rare Recordings of Songs from Brazil, Russica and the United States".
