We're so sorry that our old friend Wes "Scoop" Nisker just passed away. Scoop was one of the most original voices of the counter-culture, speaking for our generation as a radio and TV star, author and Buddhist teacher -- and inspiring many of us to take action for a better world.
At progressive radio station KSAN, Scoop created "news you can dance to" -- a toe-tapping mix of journalism, comedy, activism, rock'n roll and spiritualism that lifted our spirits in the darkest times. And he was one of our first hosts at Videowest, the indie TV studio where we pioneered a new form of rock journalism with his help.
One of Scoop's trademarks were his "man-on-the-street" interviews, when he took the pulse of the culture by asking passers-by burning questions such as "what kind of music turns you on?" and "is western civilization doomed?" (see a few samples in this video).
Scoop was a good friend and a gracious mentor, who taught us so much over the years. We would look up to him when covering news events, seek his advice about our TV programming -- and took his Buddhist meditation workshops at Spirit Rock years later.
We will miss Scoop's gentle soul, witty writing and deep commitment to building a more just and sustainable world for all life on Earth. Our sympathy to his daugher Rose Nisker and his extended family. Rest in peace, old pal.
Enjoy this video interview with Scoop, which we recorded just a few years ago at our last Videowest anniversary, expertly edited by Joe Dea.

The Videowest Story with Fabrice Florin
Enjoy this cool video about Videowest, the indie TV studio where we created a new genre of rock journalism in the early 80's. Our talented friend Joe Dea edited this brilliant tribute to our community, based on an interview with Videowest founder Fabrice Florin, recorded at our 40th Anniversary Party in San Francisco in 2019.
This cinematic “tour de force” captures the story of Videowest — and the vision behind it. Our creative trademark was a fast-paced montage of interviews, comedy, music and news, which is reflected throughout the video.
Videowest was more than just a TV studio, it was a cultural movement. Our story is about the voices of a generation yearning to be heard by producing “television for the rest of us.” It’s about a small group of creative oddballs who came together to express the “worldview from the rock generation”: the wild times we spent together, the social values we shared and the heroes we worshipped. In a few short years, we featured hundreds of popular artists like Laurie Anderson, Ray Bradburry, the Clash, Francis Coppola, Elvis Costello, Devo, the Ramones, REM, and many more.
Kudos to Joe for this little gem, which is such an endearing dive into our youth, and the new wave of television we unleashed together. His masterpiece breaks new ground with this new form of storytelling, which interweaves journalism and entertainment to tell our story. We are very grateful to him for this wonderful gift.
Many thanks as well to all the Videowest alumni who helped produce these video interviews, just like in the old days: Stuart Bass, Lee Callister, Vince Casalaina, Eric Christensen, Juanita Diana Feeney, Phyllis Uppman Florin, Steve Goldsmith, David Lawrence, Bj McAllister Martin, Betsy Miller, Evelyn Messinger, Jeffrey Nemerovski, Erik Nelson, Frankie Peticlerc and Marcus Pun, to name but a few.
