The Bhakti Beat An international, independent kirtan & mantra music news blog covering the Western kirtan movement. Videos, news, reviews and interviews -- Get the Bhav!

The Bhakti Beat is an online magazine covering the world of kirtan, mantra music and sacred chant in all forms and traditions. Created by Brenda Patoine, a freelance neuroscience writer who discovered kirtan at Omega's Ecstatic Chant weekend in 2006, when she walked into a Krishna Das concert late and was instantly swept into the bhav of 1,000 or so bhaktas dancing and chanting ecstatically to a climaxing Maha Mantra (Hare Krishna chant). She has not been the same since. ;-)

When some "random" video pops up on fb autoplay and almost instantly, you're swimming in the bhava, even if you missed it live and are a million (or even a couple hundred) miles away. Some kirtans just do that to you, even from a distance, even "just" on video.

Do you have this experience Bhakti Beaters? Or are kirtan videos just "meh"?

Please share a video that has moved you, if one has!

And let's hear it for the , for all of us who can't be there live.

Thank you for the swim Ambika Chant and Brooklyn Kirtan Collective.

from Snatam Kaur, single releases today. Premiere video at noon ET. This feels like a new post-Yogi Bhajan beginning. What do you think Bhakti Beaters?

I dedicate this song to my beloved step father, Sat Santokh, who I can see dancing now and inspiring me to take the journey of love and light in my life, come what may. He passed away just a few days ago. I am in tears with an open heart all at the same time.

I’ll be over on YouTube for the premiere of our music video at Noon EST! Join us there: https://youtu.be/Mx6Aw2Tt2aA

Wednesday Wisdom, a day late. Don't believe everything your (fake) guru says.

If the general public only knew half of the inane things that came out of his mouth– it's laughable, incomprehensible and tragic how many people he fooled with his fake narrative and guru image.

Well, the bhakti world's beloved Hans Christian just missed the Grammy in the New World, Chant and Ambient category, BUT it was still a good day at the Grammys because SHAKTI, the reunion band of John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain and friends, nabbed the Grammy for Best World Music album and another for Best Global Music Performance. Hussain also won Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. As the Times of India put it, "Indian talent won big." (Article in comments.)

Didn't know this. Should have.

Deception can be found in the most obvious places if you know what to look for.

When will we learn?

"Finally, one who embraces the path of Bhakti very quickly stops doing these practices to get anything or feel anything. Rather, the Kirtan becomes an outpouring of love and emotion to the beloved, an unburdening, an offering."

Check out Jai's online and in-person offerings for those lucky enough to be in Northern Cali.

Anyone seen this docu-series on Peacock about the Hare Krishna sexual abuse and murder scandals? Amazing to us that this stuff still remains so buried...

Rolling Stone reviewed it, and even that somehow missed our radar.

Forge a Deeper Connection with the Divine - Embrace Divine Wisdom, Spiritual Growth, and Joy

Two ways to experience bhakti (divine connection and love) are through listening to stories (śravanam) and singing (kirtanam). Join me as I relate a story of one of the Hindu deities each day, to make a connection to the divine. Then, I will teach and sing a song (bhajan / kirtan) that relates to the deity. An audio course for 10 minutes a day for 10 days.

Chanting reduces cortisol (a stress hormone) and increases altruism. Y'all probably knew that already from personal experience, but it's nice to see some rigorous science being applied to the practice of chanting.

Hats off to Gemma Perry OM for continued work on the science of chanting.

It’s here! Our latest publication on the psychology and physiology of !
Designed and written with the wonderful Vince Polito and William Thompson

This research aimed to understand how silent repetition and vocal chanting of the sound “om” impacts , , and social connection.

Thirty-four participants attended a 12-minute chanting session, randomly assigned to vocal or silent chanting groups. Cortisol levels were measured through saliva samples, and participants reported feelings of anxiety and altruism.

Results showed reductions in levels and self-reported anxiety for both vocal and silent chanting. Vocal chanting showed a more pronounced decrease in self-reported anxiety. Altruism scores increased after both chanting types, although no evidence suggested an extension of altruism across cultures.

This may mean that chanting could be applied in stress management and ther**eutic contexts.

40-day mantra challenge with Larisa Stow & Shakti Tribe to open the heart chakra. Who doesn't need that?

?

Living from the heart is more than a philosophy, it's a vibrational shift that ripples through every aspect of our being. It's a conscious choice to respond to life with love, no matter the dissonance that may arise.

In moments of turmoil, I invite you to ask yourself this question, "What would love do?"

It shifts your response from reaction to compassion, altering your perspective on even the most challenging situations. It's not about dismissing our challenges or pretending they don't exist. Instead, it's an acknowledgment that even in the most difficult moments, love is a beacon guiding us through the storm.

Right now, we’re working with Richard Hardy, Shakti Tribe’s wizard and master astrologist. He’s researching the most optimum time to start the 40-day mantra challenge on the new year. As a community, we have done mantra challenge for the root, sacral and solar plexus and now we are moving to the heart centre.

The timing couldnt be any more perfect given what’s going in the world. Love is not only a necessity in the external realm but also within our internal landscapes to uphold our vibrational frequency. This mantra challenge is an invitation to collectively shift from judgment to love. ❤️

Come join us in the Larisa's Shakti Love Warriors Facebook group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/68795145991

More to know about Spotify.

$3.6 billion for the CEO.

$0.003 per stream for artists.

That's 3/10ths of a penny, fyi.

Spotify for Artists?

Spotify is the biggest music streaming service in the world and yet it’s paying one of the lowest royalty rates at around $0.003 per stream.
The CEO of Spotify Daniel Ek is worth 3 x the net worth of Paul McCartney (one of the greatest selling recording artists of all time)
…..& ok business is business 😏 but Ek has invested 100 million dollars of these profits made from other peoples art into War weaponry tech! (google it)

As a consumer, I used spotify for many years & even for quite sometime knowing the above information 😅👆🏼
I was comfortable with what I knew, it works really well & all my friends use it, but the biggest hurdle stopping me from moving to another service was my playlists! Years & years of research curating them.
(Solution below)
But if We want things to change, We have to put our money where our mouth is.
I personally made the switch to as they pay one of the highest rates to artists at around $0.01 per stream.
The app looks, feels & works the same as Spotify, but it comes with better audio quality & it’s the same price 👌🏼
“But my playlists!?” …..Fear not friends! I found an app called “song shift” You can easily shift your playlists from spotify to your chosen service in the click of a button for Free.

So make the change!
Support services that pay musicians a fair share of the profits they make from the music on their platform.

Something to keep in mind as all your favorite artists share their Spotify "Wrapped" stats. Spotify pays artists abominably and makes billions. Support artists directly by buying their music, as well as sharing, liking and streaming.

And PS, Bandcamp gives ALL proceeds to the artist on the first Friday of each month. That's today!

Russell Brand as Kali? Uck...

Despite the dreadful image, this is good old-fashioned investigative reporting on the Russell Brand "brand" and his purposeful drift into right-wing conspiracy, which he seems to be using as a cover for sexual abuse and misconduct. Interestingly, no mention of his association with the ISKCON Hare Krishnas -- despite the dreadful image!

We're loving these super sweet acoustic sets Snatam Kaur has started doing regularly for livestream -- pretty sure that's a new thing, unless we've missed it in the past. Just heartfelt voice and acoustic guitar...sublime.
