And the winner is……

Autumn Hayes is the winner of LAWRENCE SONGWRITER SHOWCASE #5!
Runner up George Scheckel Music, and 2nd runner up Coleman D Rhudy, both received one song production packages. This is because we met our fundraising goal, thank you!

In addition, Jill Anderson was the winner of our 50/50 charity raffle, and donated her prize! So, O’Connell Youth Ranch will receive two ukuleles for their instrument library.

Thanks to all those who attended, and see you for the next event!

Let’s hear from one of tomorrow night's contestants, George Scheckel:
“I moved to Kansas from Chicago in 1968 after forming our first grade school garage band in 1966-67 time frame. I have continued playing guitar and writing songs while my wife and I raised our family and made a living in telecom and digital imaging technology for replacement of film in post production and movie theaters. I returned to Kansas in 2015 after 15 years living in LA and doing business development in LA and Asia, retired and began focusing on career 3.0 in music performance and songwriting. We now live in Basehor Kansas and I perform mostly in KC, Lawrence and Topeka at the moment.”

“Born in Lawrence, grew up not far in various and sundry places.
But I love this town because it gives birth to the arts; a mecca so to speak, for creativity. Most of my songs are about girls; we are all a work in progress; sometimes funny haiku's come to mind. Serving up a hefty Love & Positivity Combo with a double order of Maximum Effort- on the siiiiiiiiiide. Actual influences are too numerous, but I'd start with John Fogerty and Kurt Cobain; Sooo, yup, that's me.”

Autumn Hayes is an alternative singer/songwriter and musician based in Eudora, KS. Hayes’s sound mixes elements of the modern indie-rock of Florence + The Machine, Alanis Morissette, and Melissa Etheridge with her bluesy guitar playing which is heavily inspired by Eric Clapton, Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac), and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd). Autumn’s songwriting works to express and expose her feelings and soul to the world as she reflects on past life experiences that shaped her as a person. I

About O’Connell:
The O’Connell Children’s Shelter exists is to improve the lives of children and families, with a focus on those at-risk in Douglas County and across the state of Kansas.

O’Connell Children’s Shelter provides long-term, short-term, and emergency residential placements with the capacity to serve almost 60 children in five facilities located throughout Douglas County, as well as robust Prevention and Foster Family services. OCS is a non-profit organization with over 80 years of experience serving at-risk youth and their families in Lawrence and the surrounding rural communities, and is fully licensed and approved by the Kansas Department for Children and Families.

Join us Tues., June 7 at 7pm at Uplift Coffee Co. for Lawrence Songwriter Showcase #5. Bring a lawn chair, and join us at the back patio of Uplift!

7:00 PM - Pre-Show: Songwriter Round
7:30 PM - Closed Mic Competition

Local Lawrence area musicians will compete in this closed mic, amateur songwriter event. Voting is 50/50 audience/anonymous judges vote. One vote per audience member for one songwriter. Winners receive a free one song production package, which allows them to record and release their first song to streaming platforms.

SONGWRITER REGISTRATION:
Potential participants can email [email protected] to register. To qualify, songwriters must be of amateur status, meaning no professional recordings of their compositions have been released. In addition, songwriters must have two original songs ready to perform at the closed mic event. Winners receive a free one song production package, which allows them to record and release their first song to streaming platforms.
