New book alert! Norah Bowman’s "My Eyes Are Fuses" is a bold exploration of tensions between freedom of art and the constraints of gender. Spanning centuries, these poems offer enchantments and antidotes, extract the poison from moments of pain, distil it down to a sweet elixir. Here, women are animals, witches, artists, rebels, imagined beyond their accomplishments, drawn together through time.

Upcoming book launch: Join Norah Bowman for the book launch of her new poetry collection. Sarah De Leeuw will host the event, which will feature readings by Betsy Trumpener and, of course, Norah Bowman. Books will be available for sale from Books & Company.

November 16th, 7-9 PM
Books & Company Prince George
Free to attend & everyone is welcome!

Author Onjana Yawnghwe spoke with SFU's The Peak about her poetry collection, We Follow the River:

'There is an unknowable quality to our parents,' she explained. This could be trauma “hidden under many layers, or kept locked and secure within themselves.' It could also be 'how the act of becoming a parent is on some level a loss of a parent’s life.' She added, 'This is often not really acknowledged.' Losing her parents was a “cascade of loss” that led to this book being dedicated to their memory.

'People who pick up this book will know my family, if even a little, and in that way, a tiny part of my parents will live on, even though they are no longer on this earth.'

Pauline Le Bel's poetry collection, "Becoming the Harvest" is now available!

“Keep on raising hell until / Heaven is in sight, writes Pauline Le Bel in this meditation on aging and death. Fierce, wise, and featuring a healthy dose of gallows humour, Becoming the Harvest is testament to the formidable power that gathers around a life well lived.”

—Rob Taylor, author of The News and Weather

Upcoming book launch: October 27th, Bowen Island Library, 1 PM
Enjoy a reading, Q&A, and refreshments to celebrate the launch of Becoming the Harvest! Free to attend and all are welcome.

From CBC: "For 30 years Barbara Gail Pettigrew lived in Cedar Springs institution. It was notorious for the way the people who lived there were treated. 10 years ago a class action lawsuit was settled for the clients that lived there. The institutional records of what happened to Barbara haunted her niece, author Elizabeth Ruth. So much so that she has now written a book of poetry about her aunt's life. Elizabeth Ruth joined Host Ismaila Alfa in the studio to talk about it."

Forty+ Years of BC & Feminist Publishing

Caitlin Press was established in 1977 by Carolyn Zonailo as a feminist literary press. In the 1980s, Caitlin Press expanded its mandate to that of a BC literary press.

Cynthia Wilson and the late Ken Carling bought Caitlin Press in 1991 and moved the business to Prince George, quickly establishing themselves as the trade publisher of the Central Interior of British Columbia. During her fourteen years as publisher of Cailtin Press, Cynthia Wilson also stayed true to Zonailo’s original mandate, supporting and publishing a wide variety of BC women’s literature.

In March 2008, Vici Johnstone of Halfmoon Bay purchased the press. Under her direction, Caitlin Press continues to publish books that reflect the diverse cultures, histories and concerns of BC, bridging the gap between the urban and the rural. Caitlin also remains committed to its feminist origins by publishing bold works by and about BC women for a local and national readership. In 2015, Vici Johnstone and Caitlin Press received the Jim Douglas Award from the Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia. In 2016, Caitlin Press launched Dagger Editions, publishing literary fiction, non-fiction and poetry by and about q***r women (those who identify as q***r women, including trans women or trans men, or anyone who includes this in their personal history).

Caitlin Press publishes culturally significant books, including fiction, non-fiction (both historical and creative), and poetry. Occasionally we will produce a children’s or young adult title.
