Scanning like crazy, but I know I need to be posting. Anyway, just showing a little of the process. Here’s Mike’s film (Mike Bower loaned his film to add to my digital archive). I’ve been documenting, splicing and cleaning to get ready to scan his several thousand foot of film. Arduous, but necessary to make the process run smooth.

A number of people have messaged me how I scan. Here is a short clip showing the process using the Universal 1 by Moviestuff.

It’s not particularly complex. Thread the film, adjust brightness and other settings, select the film type, resolution and set the scan going. I can scan up to 2K with the ability to overscan all the way to the sprocket holes.

Want to do this yourself? Unfortunately Moviescan is no longer in business. But fortunately this 8mm/Super 8/16mm scanner is for sale. Message me for details.

Working on my film, but came across this little beauty to test some super 8 audio. New old stock, so it looks like the day it was made. Anyway, my 9yr daughter thought it was cool 😎

You find a lot of parades when you go through old home movies. Some are better than others. This one is quite fun. It’s from the National Cherry Festival held for the last 97 years in Traverse City, Michigan. Now if I could only figure the year?

FYI: better scans to come, I’m just cataloguing right now :)

One of the challenges of working with orphaned 8mm film is securing a good date. Now you can look up Kodak film manufacturing codes, or better still scanning car license plates, but failing those there’s always car make and model.

These cars are examples from a 400ft reel that found its way to the Old Home Movie vLog all the way from Hammond Indiana. I suspect around 1954, but not being a US car guy I can’t tell you for sure. So, think you know someone who has what it takes to ID these Detroit bad boys? Leave comments below and share, share, share!

The Old Home Movie Vlog is close to relaunch. Working out the kinks in the film scanner and then it’s reels and reels of 16mm Kodachrome. Like this one. You know you’re gonna want to watch the family blowing bubblegum bubbles over and over and over again ;)

First film clean in over 2yrs while I prep to reboot this thing. I’m giving myself a year to go through my whole collection, share it, and then get rid of the horde. Please follow along on all the regular social media channels as I comb through literally 1000s of feet of old home movies in an effort to rediscover the past. I’ll even give a little insight into the people I connect with and the whole digitisation process - even the dreaded vinegar syndrome. Enjoy!

For anyone still following the page, the creator is just about done with his proper job and is going to kick this into high gear. Stay tuned for some great content.
