"Black Women Taught Us:
An Intimate History of Black Feminism"
by Jenn M. Jackson, PhD

The phrase, Black Girl Magic, glosses over the hard work and leadership that Black women have provided their communities and the USA for years. In "Black Women Taught Us," Jenn Jackson, PhD, provides us with profiles of 11 Black women leaders from bell hooks, Angela Davis, and Harriet Jacobs. Twelve if you count Jackson’s own reflections of how they grew into their voice as a q***r genderflux androgynous Black woman, parent, and scholar - and you should. Black Women Taught Us is a great introduction and refresher (it’s been a few years since I’ve read any Lorde) to Black feminist thought. This could be the basis of a course, as well as a kick ass book club selection.

This is the romantic comedy written for the stressed out parent, the “WTF am I doing with my life?” partner, and those going through a rough couple of years. This isn’t about finding love, but finding your way back and the hard work that is necessary. This is the third book in the Leade Park series. Highly recommend reading in order, but TWC can stand alone.

bell hooks left us in this world with a literal STACK of wisdom and analysis about love, life, and feminism. Her work has transformed the thinking of many people we know in our organizing community. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor bell hooks' legacy than starting off a new season with this virtual interview with the one and only Stacy Davis Gates, Vice President of the Chicago Teacher's Union. Stacy shares the stories of her personal transformation and political awakening after reading Ain’t I A Woman: Black Women and Feminism bt the late bell hooks, and shares her struggles and lessons learned from finding affirmation through bell's words to applying this information to her lifelong journey as a Black woman in building community power in coalition with Black men and non-Black people.
