This Indigenous People’s Day, I’m proud to announce that the next edition of THE ALIGNIST will feature NATIVE AMERICA, with a focus on the Cherokee Nation which is a sovereign nation within the United States. For the last three years, THE ALIGNIST has previously always featured foreign countries. This box will be our first to examine identities and experiences within this country in an effort to bring forward key moments, cultural elements, and lived realities that have long been overlooked.

While many might recall being taught some fleeting lesson on the Trail of Tears in school,
our forthcoming box will unpack the past and how it persists into the present for the largest Tribe in the country to add depth and breadth to our understanding of Native life. It will feature stories of people like Swimmer, a Cherokee holy man and authority on religious beliefs and cultural practices through to people like Wilma Mankiller, the first Cherokee woman to serve as tribal chief, who strove to expand membership, employment, and vital services for her people.
