*England takes a two nil series lead against West Indies*.......
...*as Bashir, Root, Brook give West Indies a 241-run hammering*

*England 416 (Pope 121, Duckett 71, Stokes 69) and 425 (Root 122, Brook 109, Duckett 76, Pope 51, Seales 4-97) beat West Indies 457 (Hodge 120, Da Silva 82*, Athanaze 82, Woakes 4-84) and 143 (Brathwaite 47, Bashir 5-41) by 241 runs*

An hour of dominating cricket from England late on day four ended West Indies' hopes of putting up a fight in their pursuit of 385

Shoaib Bashir's first five-wicket haul on English soil sealed victory inside four days for the hosts, after Joe Root and Harry Brook had set England up against West Indies in the second Test at Trent Bridge.

Root and Brook each scored centuries before the hosts were bowled out for 425 in their second innings - the first time in England's history that they had scored 400 in both innings of a Test - setting West Indies a target of 385.

Then, at 20 years and 282 days, off-spinner Bashir became the youngest England bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a men's Test at home, beating the previous record of just-retired seamer James Anderson. His 5 for 41 gave England the win, by 241 runs, and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series being played for the Richards-Botham Trophy.

Zimbabwe Cricket has started the construction of state of the art cricket stadium in Victoria Falls, ZC managing director Givemore Makoni has revealed.

The project, being undertaken by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), with the assistance of the Government and the International Cricket Council (ICC), is one of the three sport infrastructure ventures being implemented across the country at a cost of between US$5 million and US$10 million.

Expectations are that the 10 000-seater venue, also to be known as the Mosi-oa-Tunya Oval, will be ready by the time Zimbabwe co-host two major global cricket tournaments — the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

ZC managing director Givemore Makoni said that contractors were now on site to commence the construction of the cricket Oval.

“Civil works have begun; the water works, fencing and so forth. We are pretty excited work has already started and there is mobilisation that is going on in terms of getting equipment there,” he said.

“We are working with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, who are the main contractors, to ensure that the project starts. As we speak, I know that there has been borehole drilling to make sure that there is water at the ground. Fencing is in progress; earthworks are in progress. So, we have really started, and we are very excited.

“We want it ready by the 2026 and 2027 World Cups. We are hoping by late 2025, the pitch will be playable, and the other facilities will also be worked on such that we can meet our targets of 2026.”

The Mosi-oa-Tunya Oval is being built on 10 hectares of land in the resort town. It has been billed as a game changer for Zimbabwe as the country has been struggling to have sporting facilities fit for international events

*England wrestle 2nd Test lead against West Indies*

*🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 lead WI by runs*

*England 416 and 248 for 3 (Duckett 76, Brook 71*, Pope 51, A Joseph 2-58) lead West Indies 457 (Hodge 120, Da Silva 82*, Woakes 4-84)*

Half-centuries to three of their top five allowed England to wrest back control of the second Test after West Indies' spirited lower-order resistance had given the tourists a narrow first-innings lead on an enthralling third day at Trent Bridge.

Twin fifties from Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope - the biggest contributors in England's first innings - steadied the hosts after the loss of Zak Crawley just ten balls into their second innings, a 119-run partnership for the second wicket overhauling West Indies' 41-run lead and pulling them 86 ahead.

Then fifty to Harry Brook during another century stand for England - worth 108 so far with Joe Root - left West Indies frustrated. At stumps on day three, Brook was unbeaten on 71 and Root was 37 not out.

*Suryakumar confirmed as India's T20I captain for Sri Lanka tour*

Suryakumar Yadav has been confirmed as India's new T20I captain, ahead of Hardik Pandya who was the vice-captain of the squad that won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June.

Suryakumar's first assignment is the three T20Is in Sri Lanka on July 27, 28 and 30, which is also the first assignment of India's new coach Gautam Gambhir. It's also seen as the first step towards building for the next T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026. While Hardik is part of the T20I squad, Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain.

Gill had captained India in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe that followed the T20 World Cup.

The need for a new captain arose following Rohit Sharma's retirement from T20Is after winning the World Cup. Though Hardik was Rohit's deputy at the T20 World Cup and is a more experienced captain - he has led India in three ODIs and 16 T20Is, apart from leading Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the IPL - it is understood fitness concerns and workload management may have been factors in the decision taken by the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar.

*Pj Moor to face Zimbabwe Cricket*

Ireland’s National Men’s Selector Andrew White confirmed a 14-member squad for the one-off Zimbabwe Test in a press conference on Wednesday, 17 July.

While the squad has a familiar look, spinners Matthew Humphreys and Gavin Hoey are key additions to the red-ball team for the one-off Test match.

“Humphreys made his Test debut in Sri Lanka and found the going difficult against good players of spin out in the subcontinent. He'd admit himself that he went through a period of a loss of form and maybe a loss of confidence, but he's worked extremely hard to come back into the reckoning," White said.

“Hoey is a talented leg spinner, and his ability to spin the ball both ways gives us a strong wicket-taking option. Again, he’s a player that's been on the radar for a while and can play across all three formats."

Earlier this year, in March, Ireland created history when they recorded their maiden victory in the longest format since achieving full Test status, beating Afghanistan in UAE by six wickets.

This will be the first-ever Test to be hosted in the Nothern Ireland and their second home Test in nearly seven years. It will be played at the Civil Service Cricket Club, Stormont in Belfast from 25 to 29 July.

“On the back of our first victory [against Afghanistan], we’re definitely looking to back that up with another win," White added.

"We're not looking to just pick a squad that will compete, we're looking at a squad that can actually win the Test match - by taking 20 wickets and scoring the runs that we need to score arguably in the first innings to set up the victory."

*Ireland Test squad*: Andrew Balbirnie (c), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gavin Hoey, Graham Hume, Matthew Humphreys, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, PJ Moor, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.
