Happy ! Today, we are highlighting the basic components of monarch habitat.

Monarch habitat should meet the needs of all four life stages: egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa), and butterfly (adult). It should include the monarch’s hostplant, milkweed, and various nectaring sources. The habitat should also vary in bloom time, shape, and height. Not only does this habitat sustain monarchs, but it also supports other species, such as quail, bees, other butterflies, beetles, birds, and more!

Happy ! Did you know that monarchs prefer specific microclimates when overwintering?

Microclimates are small regions within a general climate zone with unique climatic conditions.

In Mexico, the eastern monarch butterflies overwinter in Mexico's oyamel fir forest, a unique mountain habitat with an elevation between 2,400 and 3,600 meters high and temperatures averaging between 32 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

In the west, monarch butterflies overwinter along California's Pacific coast. California overwintering groves of eucalyptus, Monterey pine, and Monterey cypress provide similar microclimate conditions to Mexico's oyamel fir forest.

A new way to track monarchs! And you can get involved..

Cape May Point Science Center and Cellular Tracking Technologies are deploying the first ever solar-powered coded digital radio tags on Monarchs tomorrow on Cape May Point, NJ. These tags weight 0.06g and have no battery, so as long as they have sun on them, they will transmit their unique ID once per second. Since they operate on the same frequency as Bluetooth, they can be detected by any smart device running the Monarch Science app (with a ~100-200m range from cellphone to tag). The app is available in both iOS and Android app stores; here are the links:

MJV's Western Science Coordinator, Sarah Gomes, captured this fantastic shot of a monarch egg on showy milkweed in her garden today. We can tell that the caterpillar will hatch soon because you can see its black head and white body through the egg casing.

What stage are the monarchs in your habitats? Feel free to share photos of monarchs in your gardens in the comments.

Monarch activity is ramping up as preparations for fall migration begin. Several roosts have been observed, particularly in the Upper Midwestern U.S. When you see a monarch at any life stage, we want to know. Contribute your observations of adult monarchs, eggs, larvae, and roosts to help track the fall migration with the Journey North community!
