The Directorial Team of Rocky & Miranda
- A decade in the making

Today I would like to recognize, honor, and celebrate the last ten years pursuing the art of storytelling with my friend and creative partner Miranda Winters. Our path led us from the sleepy seaside town of Santa Cruz to the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles - as we followed our passion to share stories that we felt mattered. We began our journey naively thinking that our first award-winning documentary would pave the way to success, but soon realized that we were going to have to do a lot more than rest on our laurels if we hoped to make filmmaking into a career.

We spent our first six months in LA living in a small studio apartment. There were times when we thought we had bitten off more than we could chew, but no matter how dark the future looked we never faltered. Sometimes we lost a little faith, sometimes we lost a lot, but we never gave up. We realized that to make it as storytellers we needed to put in the work - but little did we know that we were about to embark on a Shackleton-esque journey.

Our journey took us around the world, from the cliffs of Lauterbrunnen Switzerland and Dashanbao China, to the mythical giant waves of Nazare Portugal and Half Moon Bay California, to the chaotic and passionate protest for the fight for equality in the streets of America, and to the heartbreak of human tragedy that surrounds us all, we continued to pursue our passion one step at a time. From that first award-winning documentary film, to creating over 20 films and over 150 episodes of television, we forged a path to our future and success.

We have come a long way from that moldy studio apartment, and as we celebrate a decade of friendship and passion for storytelling we are proud to announce that we have signed co-production deals for three of our new TV shows with one of the biggest entertainment groups in Los Angeles, as well as securing one of the top names in documentary filmmaking as an executive producer on one of those shows. We are also excited to announce that we are about to release the project that has been four years in the making “Letters to Liam”, the film tells the heartbreaking and inspiring story of MMA fighter Marcus Kowal and his wife Mishel who, after losing their son Liam to a drunk driver, fight to pass a law in Liam’s name only to learn the disturbing truth about a broken political system fueled by dark money.

We have been fortunate enough to have incredibly talented, hard working, and loyal individuals that joined us on our journey. I can not thank them enough and would like to recognize and thank the core team and supporters that have been with us most of the decade including Alexey Orlov, Robert Martin, Michael Hollister, Rayna Zemel, Jennifer Winters & Tom Winters, Andrea Zemel & Adam Brown, and Nicole Martin. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our new team members Nicholas McCarthy & Analís Martin along with all the others that have been part of this incredible journey. Last, but not least, I would like to thank all of you that have trusted us to share your story, and all of you that have been inspired by our work. I would also like to send a special thank you to my son Kadin for being my inspiration.

One of the many things that the last two years have taught us is that we have no idea what the future holds, but I know that I will appreciate the time spent with this incredible group of people as we share the stories that we believe will help leave the world a better place.

“We Can’t Breathe is more than a music video and more than a film. It is a visual and poetic piece of art that both documents the moments and joins the voices of those crying out for much needed change in this time of racial injustice.” – Paul Sloop, Short Film Director Cleveland International Film Festival

Written in isolation, ‘Storm’ compelled award-winning directors Rocky Romano and Miranda Winters (Winters Rock Entertainment) to reach out to Kiesza to work with her to create a powerful short film to help first responders amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I wrote Storm late one night, while in lockdown, and posted it on my Instagram account the next day. From there everything snowballed, and I joined forces with Winters Rock Entertainment and Pond5 to create this incredible aerial video of the world during COVID-19." said Kiesza.

Storm is a global collaboration that showcases stunning drone footage of the early days of lockdown in 2020. Over 100 filmmakers donated footage from 27 countries, including footage of Kiesza on the empty shores of Toronto. Other countries featured in the music video include, Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, United Kingdom and more.

One year ago, we released Storm, a global music video collaboration with Kiesza and drone pilots around the world to raise money for first responders. Today, so much has changed, but Storm continues to serve as a visual time capsule of a world in lockdown.

Thank you to everyone, including the incredible drone cinematographers, who took part in this project, it wouldn’t have happened without all of your efforts!

Humbled and honored to announce that We Can’t Breathe has won The Ophelia Award, In Celebration of Hope, at the 2021 Oscar Qualifying Cleveland International Film Festival !!! With only a small percentage of films submitted being accepted into the festival, and with so many other brilliant films included, we could not be more proud to accept this incredibly meaningful award. And thank you so much to all who supported us along the way, and to Paul Sloop and the entire team at CIFF for holding such an amazing virtual fest! Lastly, we would like to thank our team that helped make this film possible including Miranda Winters, Rayna Zemel, Rocky Romano, WAKIL, Kelli Wakili, Sabrina Webb, Robert Martin, Michael Hollister, Jennifer Winters, Tom Winters, Nicole Patterson, Andrea Zemel, Adam Brown, Nicholas McCarthy, Dena Drones Media, Analis Martin, Greg Andreacchi, Pond5, and all those fighting for equality and against police brutality. As we celebrate this incredible honor, we recognize that the fight is far from over and that the struggle is real. We will see you in the streets!

Winters Rock Entertainment stands in solidarity with all AAPI people in the fight against racism, bigotry, and violence. We stand against the system of white supremacy that divides and damages black and brown communities. We hope for a better future, and are willing to fight for it.
*
On March 13, 2021, we attended an event called Love Our Communities - Build Collective Power by Chinatown Community for Equitable Development (CCED) & Ktown4BlackLives where we heard Tanny Rutdow Jiraprapasuke speak about her experience dealing with a racist passenger while taking the train in LA. Perhaps the most disturbing thing about her experience was the lack of response from her fellow passengers. She looked for someone to help her, and found people avoiding her gaze.
*
On March 16, a man shot and killed 8 women, 6 of them of Asian descent, all of them at Asian-owned businesses. This is where bigotry leads. This is how a white supremacist system dehumanizes non-white people. And when someone is not considered to be human, it becomes acceptable to assault or murder them.
*
To be silent about this violence, or any violence based on race, religion, or orientation is an act of violence in itself. To ignore this injustice is to ignore all injustice. These issues belong to all of us. Every person on that train should have stood up for Tanny. Every American should stand against domestic terrorism.

Today, we pause the celebration. We pause to show respect to the eight lives that were lost. We pause to shine light on the continuing rise in hate crimes towards Asian and Asian-American communities. Sending strength, hope and support to the AAPI community as we continue to stand in solidarity, as well as denounce anti-Asian racism everywhere.

Last weekend was big for our team at WRE! Storm - our global music video project with JUNO Award Winning, Platinum selling Canadian pop star Kiesza - has just won BEST MUSIC VIDEO, BEST DRONE VIDEO, and BEST SONG at the Vegas Movie Awards!!! It was almost one year ago that Storm was released, when we were all just realizing the huge implications that COVID 19 would have on all of our lives. We created a time capsule, collecting footage from drone pilots all over the world to give a global perspective of the new pandemic lockdown lifestyle that we were all experiencing for the first time. Most importantly, this project raised funds for our frontline healthcare workers and we could not be more happy to have utilized our equipment and skills to help them. Thank you to everyone, including all the incredible drone cinematographers, who helped make Storm a reality, and thank you to the team at the Vegas Movie Awards!

15/03/2021

We are humbled and honored to announce that We Can’t Breathe was selected as “Best Music Video” for both the JURY AWARD and the AUDIENCE AWARD in the inaugural music video category at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival! Here’s what one jury member had to say; “A visceral and riveting collection of some of the most professionally-captured footage from these protests. The sound design, the cutaways, the drone shots, everything absolutely gutted me. It is so important to elevate Black voices and share their message as far as possible.”
*
First and foremost, CONGRATS to Rayna Zemel, WAKIL, and Kelli Wakili for the amazing music and lyrics that forged the heart and soul of this piece. After watching the quality of the music videos selected, we were blown away by the competition. These were some of our favorites, and we urge you to enjoy their incredible work: Paul Kalkbrenner - Parachute, The Shins - The Great Divide, Lewis Del Mar - TV, L’An2000 - The Light, Justin Lacy - I Don’t Need Another.
*
We want to thank SLO International Film Festival for recognizing work that celebrates diversity and social justice. Without platforms like this to amplify voices of artists, we might become trees falling in the forest for nobody to hear.
*
As excited as we are for the win, there is still so much work to be done. We would like to recognize all the folks that are still doing the work - attending protests and direct actions - in the fight against police brutality. They don’t win awards for the important work they do, they just keep fighting for justice and change. Black Unity, Say Their Names L.A., BLD PWR, Justice LA, People’s City Council, Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles.
