The Directorial Team of Rocky & Miranda
- A decade in the making
Today I would like to recognize, honor, and celebrate the last ten years pursuing the art of storytelling with my friend and creative partner Miranda Winters. Our path led us from the sleepy seaside town of Santa Cruz to the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles - as we followed our passion to share stories that we felt mattered. We began our journey naively thinking that our first award-winning documentary would pave the way to success, but soon realized that we were going to have to do a lot more than rest on our laurels if we hoped to make filmmaking into a career.
We spent our first six months in LA living in a small studio apartment. There were times when we thought we had bitten off more than we could chew, but no matter how dark the future looked we never faltered. Sometimes we lost a little faith, sometimes we lost a lot, but we never gave up. We realized that to make it as storytellers we needed to put in the work - but little did we know that we were about to embark on a Shackleton-esque journey.
Our journey took us around the world, from the cliffs of Lauterbrunnen Switzerland and Dashanbao China, to the mythical giant waves of Nazare Portugal and Half Moon Bay California, to the chaotic and passionate protest for the fight for equality in the streets of America, and to the heartbreak of human tragedy that surrounds us all, we continued to pursue our passion one step at a time. From that first award-winning documentary film, to creating over 20 films and over 150 episodes of television, we forged a path to our future and success.
We have come a long way from that moldy studio apartment, and as we celebrate a decade of friendship and passion for storytelling we are proud to announce that we have signed co-production deals for three of our new TV shows with one of the biggest entertainment groups in Los Angeles, as well as securing one of the top names in documentary filmmaking as an executive producer on one of those shows. We are also excited to announce that we are about to release the project that has been four years in the making “Letters to Liam”, the film tells the heartbreaking and inspiring story of MMA fighter Marcus Kowal and his wife Mishel who, after losing their son Liam to a drunk driver, fight to pass a law in Liam’s name only to learn the disturbing truth about a broken political system fueled by dark money.
We have been fortunate enough to have incredibly talented, hard working, and loyal individuals that joined us on our journey. I can not thank them enough and would like to recognize and thank the core team and supporters that have been with us most of the decade including Alexey Orlov, Robert Martin, Michael Hollister, Rayna Zemel, Jennifer Winters & Tom Winters, Andrea Zemel & Adam Brown, and Nicole Martin. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our new team members Nicholas McCarthy & Analís Martin along with all the others that have been part of this incredible journey. Last, but not least, I would like to thank all of you that have trusted us to share your story, and all of you that have been inspired by our work. I would also like to send a special thank you to my son Kadin for being my inspiration.
One of the many things that the last two years have taught us is that we have no idea what the future holds, but I know that I will appreciate the time spent with this incredible group of people as we share the stories that we believe will help leave the world a better place.
