The Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has elected five members to serve on the group’s 15-member board. Each will serve a three-year term.
SPJ/LA members re-elected two board incumbents: Kate Cagle and Elizabeth Marcellino. In addition, the membership elected the chapter’s newest board members, Sara Catania, Aaron Day and Eleanore Vega. Alex Razo will also join as an associate board member.

Medina is a national politics reporter at the New York Times, covering political attitudes and power, with a focus on the West.
A Southern California native, she spent several years reporting on the region for the National desk. Ms. Medina's reporting focused on immigration, education and poverty. She traveled all over the region examining how public policy impacts people's lives.
Since joining The New York Times in 2002, she has also covered politics in New York and Connecticut and spent several years writing about New York City public schools. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in print journalism and political science.

This year's freedom of information honoree is Duffy Carolan. Duffy has been working with news organizations throughout California for more than 30 years, defending their rights to publish news when confronted by libel and invasion of privacy lawsuits, take-down requests and retraction demands.
She regularly works with journalists to get access to public records and court proceedings and to protect their rights under California’s shield law from compelled disclosure of their sources and unpublished information in response to subpoenas in both civil and criminal matters. She is past president of the First Amendment Coalition and author of the Society of Professional Journalists' Open Government Guide for California.

Our honoree this year for audio is broadcast journalist Ian Masters. Ian is a BBC-trained broadcast journalist who has covered national security affairs for over 30 years on public radio. He is the host of the nationally-syndicated news analysis public radio program "Background Briefing”. He has also produced documentaries for ABC News and "Frontline" and edited a number of features and documentaries.
He has been a senior fellow at UCLA's Center For Strategic and International affairs and the UCLA Center For International Relations and was a consultant to the Center For National Security Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
