18 year old Julie Ann Dart went missing in the summer of 1991 in Leeds, Yorkshire. Her body was found in a field a week later in Grantham, Lincolnshire. The investigation appeared to go nowhere until the murderer struck again in January 1992. This time, the victim – 25 year old Stephanie Slater – was kidnapped in a vacant house in Birmingham, West Midlands, and later voluntarily released by the perpetrator. Why this man murdered his first victim and released his second may never be known but these two incidents were linked to a man’s attempt to extort money from the Police and British Rail, as well as in a power play between one man and the Police.

When people hear the moniker “Dr Death”, most people will think of Harold Shipman. The British serial killer that got away with murdering his patients for so long. But there is another Dr Death. Richard Gladwell McGown. Born in India in 1937, McGown was raised and educated in Scotland, acquiring a Medical Degree. Later, McGown emigrated to Sweden and Zambia before moving to Zimbabwe in the 1960s, where he attained citizenship. McGown worked as an anaesthetist at hospitals in Zimbabwe but, after some of his patients began to inexplicably die without good reason, in 1993, questions were raised and enquiries into the pain relief administered to his patients revealed devastating results.

In December 2007, 52 year old Sharon Birchwood was murdered in her own home in Ashtead, Surrey. Her ex-husband, Graham “George” Birchwood was the one who found her, having let himself into her home as the two were still very close. Sharon was a bubbly, happy, smiling and kindly woman who had no known enemies so who would want to bind her with tape and strangle her with a cord? Susan May was devoted to her elderly aunt, Hilda Marchbank, who lived independently in Manchester in the UK but was cared for on a daily basis by Susan. In the morning of 12th March 1992, Susan found Hilda dead in her bed. But this was no natural death. Hilda had been beaten and suffocated. A month later, Susan was arrested and was ultimately found guilty of the murder of Hilda Marchbank. Yet, there is very little evidence pointing to Susan May’s guilt and more evidence that Hilda Marchbank had been killed by a person or persons unknown.
