A day of girls volleyball wins on-court at the Salt Lake City Showdown was met with lackluster convention center food fare. Cutting to the quick, the “chicken fingers with fries” did the job intended — namely staving off starvation. But at $11 — and arriving as three scrawny breaded chicken ...

Special to Great Pacific Review - by Jason James BarryWhy do the simplest things never work out so simply? Of course I‘m talking about coffee. And in all places — Las Vegas. And at all moments — en route to a full morning of girls volleyball games. Last year I had cracked the code on all this,...

Notifications came from school. Early pick-up. And then, none of us knew what was next. That whole week, I had been stocking up and standing in long supermarket lines. It seemed like all of us were. But when that day came, none of us knew what was next. The middle school had let out early that morni...

Sage advice:

Or… or it could completely demoralize you. Since seeing steaming garbage get published — yet yours can’t find its way out from a literary agent’s toilet bowl — would be the final nail in the coffin of a once hopeful writing career.

The trick to a successful journey is figuring out where the hell it is you’re going. And in my return to Kansas City, I’ve been enjoying the spoils from my stumbles before. The last time here was 2022, at the tail end of COVID restrictions (it’s Missouri, not Kansas, by the way). And I was imm...

There was a time, not long ago, when someone said something in passing and said it to an actual person — and that essentially was that. Then what ensued was a full-on conversation, or sometimes an argument, or occasionally a fat lip. But people spoke their truths and generally stood by it. Now tho...

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr… The need for his words rings truer and louder now, in times when divides by race have been grasped and wielded as the cudgel for political ends. In Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963, he shared the dream most of us still dream of — GPR Editorial “I Have A Dream”...

Twice now, and more so, I’ve been made privy to old friends or past co-workers who’ve been under arrest. The most recent was a “now former” police officer I worked with, charged with pilfering tens-of-thousands from the police association he served as president of. Nearly $185,000, over year...

Looking for big-picture context about the mass shooting in Maine? Read “Our Affinity For Arguing About Gun Violence — While Avoiding Why” by Jason James Barry on Great Pacific Review.

The gun violence problem people have been talking about — when did ours begin? I’ve asked this out loud and to myself in the wake of the recent mass-shooting in Maine. There have been others that preceded it. This is just the most recent. If I had to look back (in both my journalistic and law en...

In case you didn’t notice, for the better part of 140-some-odd days there’s been a writer’s strike. I actually think it's over. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been seeking more favorable terms for movie and TV show writers, and the plight somehow also stand to protect background actors...

I had been in mid-spoonful of chewing my Cheerios, sitting on the carpet in front of the TV in the living room. My brother and my other roommate were already off on their mornings, at their jobs or sitting in traffic getting there. My wife, who I wouldn’t go on to meet for another two years, she w...

Ever have a really good coffee? How about a really bad one? Read the Peet’s Coffee review, “A Tale of Two Coffee Locations” on Great Pacific Review!

Is a bad cup of coffee considered an existential crisis or a petty first-world problem? I think the former. Or is it the latter? Whichever, to me, it’s a problem. A big one. Since having taken the mantle to review coffee stops amid my travels, I’ve sipped the good and spat the bad. Some brews ar...

When I started looking into some of my father’s old police cases, I didn’t expect to get pulled in so fully, the same way I think he did. He died carrying a picture in his wallet of a teenage girl named Janette Reynolds. Hers started as a missing persons case assigned to him when he was a Connec...

Little known facts about East Lyme, CT "The Midnight Coffee Club" book, and police:

1. A family tragedy in 1961 detailed in Chapter 13, entitled "Chesterfield Road," took place in a now-exclusive north end neighborhood in Flanders.

2. The land was once my family's farm... just off Chesterfield Road. I grew up next door.

3. If you've wondered why some people become cops: That tragedy made headlines then, and for years after, my family was ashamed. Then my father, Donald Barry, became a Connecticut State Trooper to redeem our name.
