We love making this podcast from different corners of Europe. But once a year, we ditch the screens and meet up IRL. Last week, the four of us gathered in Wojciech's hometown of Warsaw where we took the time to discuss our big dreams, our financial fears (the struggle is real) and record a special Q&A episode which is in your feed right now.

When we weren't having existential discussions about the podcast, we took Wojciech's city cycling tour, devoured a killer meal at his place (thank you Agata!) and worked out who the most enigmatic member of the podcast team is (listen to this week's episode to find out who won that title).

We’ve got a very special episode for you this week: the story of one Hungarian family, one piece of land, and two very different visions of what to do with it.

This is the final episode of our award-winning series This Is What A Generation Sounds Like, in which we hand the microphone over to young Europeans to tell us what life is like in their corner of Europe. This week, it’s ’s turn, and she’s taking us to her grandparents’ farm near Budapest.

You might have heard Katy talking on the show a couple of weeks ago about the Italian (Bolognese) word ‘umarell’ — a delightfully specific term for men of retirement age who spend their time watching roadworks. A few days ago, an incredible gift from producer arrived in the post: a 3D-printed umarell! How cool is that?!

🌳 CAMELLIA - PORTUGAL 🇵🇹

Multisecular, located in Guimarães, a magnificent example of the symbiosis between Nature and Human. The tree stands out for centuries of careful shaping, that have resulted in a monumental creation of volumes, colors, and geometrical shapes.

Today is Holocaust Remebrance Day.
Each year I go to the virtual Remember Wall of . You sign up with your name to be randomly paired with one of the victims of the Holocaust.

This year I remember Moshe Rikover, of Przasnysz in Poland . Similar to most of the innocent victims of hatred and violence, there is very little information on him. Moshe was born in 1900. He was married to Khaia, and had a son called Shraga. Taking a little time to draw his portrait allows me to think about him and attempt to pay a small tribute to his life.

The photo on the website is a little blurry. Looking at his face, he might be in his early thirties. He’s wearing a sleek shirt, and a jacket with a broad collar. His hair is combed back. I imagine him getting ready for the photo, looking into the mirror and thinking “Wow… I’m actually looking kind of sharp”. Maybe his son and wife were close by, reading his thoughts and teasing him for his vanity. Now he’s a bit embarrased, yet as they are seeing that he’s getting nervous, they smile at him with pride and admiration. His gaze softens, and instead of looking directly into the camera, he glances at them standing behind the photographer, and is feeling loved.

Moshe was murdered in the Shoa.

Remembering is a tiny, but fundamental first step to make sure it will never happen again.

It seems like there is barely a region in the world that isn’t drowning in an ocean of heartbreak right now. Each fate is a drop in that ocean. Acknowledging that every human being has a story is crucial to maintaining our empathy and humanity.

Kicking off with a splash, like oat milk into your coffee, episode one of our new mini-series is out now.

In "The Big Dairy Problem," journalist and producer Katz Laszlo navigates the muddy waters (or should we say... manure-filled waters?) of the dairy industry's role in climate change.

The episode features expert interviews with long-time climate journalist for The Guardian George Monbiot; consumer and market researcher, Elsa Guadarrama; editor-in-chief of Green Queen, Sonalie Figueiras; and Chief Sustainability Officer at Oatly, Ashley Allen.

Don't miss this gripping start to our investigative series! 🐄🌎

We're back in your ears today!

Apologies for the longer than normal summer break but we're thrilled to introduce the newest member of our team who arrived on this earth only a few days ago. He's already a keen follower of European news as you will see from his tribute to Merkel's rhombus hands.

Katz, Dominic and Wojciech are keeping things up and running whilst Katy takes some time to get to know this beautiful little human.

Tune in to hear what's been happening in Europe this week! You know where to find us (if you don't, we're here: https://europeanspodcast.com/episodes/politically-charged-post).

Some exciting news... The Europeans will be welcoming a very junior team member in September! 👶 You'll still be hearing from Katy this autumn; we're pre-recording some stuff over the summer, and she'll be popping in to say hi on the show when she's not too exhausted. But you can expect to hear a bit more from our amazing producers Katz Laszlo and Wojciech Oleksiak while she's getting to grips with parenting. Here's to more Central Europe and whale memes on the podcast ✌️🐳

A snapshot of the joyous moment when Katz and Mohamed found out on German television that we won the CIVIS Media Prize for Social Media Video for the visual episode 'Mohamed'.

The Jury said: “Both the insightful interview and the nothing short of magical visuals make accessible, especially for a young audience, an exceedingly tough subject. The wonderful, intricate and imaginative graphics give rhythm and pace to Mohamed’s narrative. Alongside the brutal reality of a refugee’s fate, the associative dramaturgy vividly brings to the fore the protagonist’s thoughts, feelings and longings.”

We're so proud of everyone involved in the making of this episode, especially , Katz Laszlo and
