We will launch “Ren Hang — at Work” by Peter Coeln with the very first copies fresh from print!
Pre-order: Ren Hang – At Work, by Peter Coeln
It's been 10 years since we published the book "Wild" by Ren Hang;
it was published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at OstLicht ,
the Photo Gallery in Vienna – his largest solo exhibition to date. About three thousand people came, many queued up for hours to see his work.
And the book sold out quickly.
During his time in Vienna, he decided to have a photoshoot in the city. Peter Coeln, photographer, collector and, among others, founder of photography museum WestLicht and OstLicht, is one of the very few people Ren Hang ever allowed to accompany while working. By publishing this book about Ren Hang at work (and including some of original photographs Ren Hang created during this shoot), the circle is complete.
We cannot really show most of the pictures from the book on instagram. Please, check
dienacht-magazine.com for details and pre-order.

▪️Unseen Dummy
Dienie Brouwer: The day that life seemed endless
These weeks we are featuring unseen dummies form dienacht Lab workshops. Thank you to everyone who chose to share their (mostly personal) stories and effort to make a book with us.
«I wanted to catch the intimate moments when people are caught by a sudden death. I found inspiration for this series in the volcano eruption at Pompeii AD 79. Villagers from the Italian village were overwhelmed by a cloud of volcanic ash and immortalized instantly. Like a photograph: people turned into living statues within seconds, and through the years they became icons from a forgotten time… “The day that life seemed endless” reminds us not only of the tragic disaster in Pompeii, but it is also a mirror, in which the vulnerability of the human race is reflected.»
The dummy is all about vulnerability and aesthetics in its material form. It is made out of various papers, including soft handmade Japanese paper, metallic and trasparent papers. It features loose prints, and a small size insert cut out in the heart of the book.

“All shamans and atavistic magicians unanimously agree that true magical power lies in the early primeval states… When the magician or shaman enters animal (or pre-animal) states of consciousness, he or she can tap into the power and abilities of that animal (or pre-animal creature) that was activated … thus making it possible for him or her to act in a way that would be impossible or at least very difficult in human consciousness.”

🔸 Dummy: Susana Espana ‘I Want to Stay’
In the following weeks we will be featuring unseen dummies form our workshops. Thank you to everyone who chose to share their (mostly personal) stories and effort to make a book with us.
Here is the first one, a very subtle family story from Susana Espana.
John Stuart Mill, a celebrations 19th-Century liberal thinker wrote once: “Human nature is not a machine that is built according to a pattern or a model and ready to do exactly the work that is prescribed for it but a tree that needs to grow and develop on all sides according to the tendencies of it its inner forces, which make it a living thing”.
Although my tree can never be free, if it remains rooted in the Earth, I trust that my children like many other children in separated families, will learn to find that their inner resilience between two homes.
Many of the farwells between me and my children for each separation end with the phrase “I want to stay”.
Sometimes I feel that the big fir tree in my garden also whispers the same words to me “I want to say”, especially when the neighbours remind me that this tree must be cut down since it has grown too much.

For any photographer, the recording of images is the first part of their journey with a story. The process that begins after the camera has been put down is often more challenging. The photographer is required to reflect, to speak and even to write so that their work can have a full life.
In our Photobook Workshop, it is this life and afterlife that we will be concerned with: it is about the creation of photobooks, artist books, zines (depending on each individual project) on the one hand, as well as about rethinking the project in the context of a photobook as a specific medium, on the other hand.
We work closely with the participants on the production of a dummy from their own photo projects, focusing on the analysis of the project, editing, sequencing, design and the importance and choice of materials in the production of photobooks.
Photobook Workshops culminate with each participant creating a physical photobook dummy.
Workshop is lead by Calin Kruse and Yana Kruse / dienacht Publishing.

“How could a medium like photography ever manage to make an effective representation of as interiorised, inward a phenomenon as consciousness?” — from the most recent review of Relaxing Chamber / Aleksei Kazantsev on C4 Journal. What a fair question, isn’t it?
Relaxing Chamber is a series of photographs that revolves around one common theme: the idea of consciousness in humans and animals.

We are into personal stories, you know that. And for us making books should also be about joy. They do not make you rich, as we all know, so why else then? The upcoming *Erlebnispark* is both intimate and fun.
We met Paul at one of our workshops in France, we met Carla first through his pictures and then in Paris on the boat of Polycopies last year. Who are they? They are two people who went on a road trip around Poland searching for coal mines and ended up with the adventure park that you will see in the book.
It’s simple and raw. Intimate and fun. Authentic. And this is all that matters.

Leipzig Photobook Festival ✦ Exhibition: Eiger Foundation African Photobook of the Year Award. – Launched in Geneva in 2021, it is the annual prize that supports work that contributes significantly to the evolving narrative of photography. In 2022, the prize was awarded to the most memorable photographic publication by a photographer from or working in Africa. One winner and three runners-ups were selected by the international jury from a total of 4000 submissions. The exhibition will feature the shortlist of 17 titles. – In the carousel: Winner: The African Lookbook: A Visual History of 100 Years of African Women, by Catherine McKinley. Most of us grew up with images of African women that were purely anthropological — bright displays of exotica where the deeper personhood seemed tucked away. Or they were chronicles of war and poverty — “poverty porn.” But now, curator Catherine E. McKinley draws on her extensive collection of historical and contemporary photos to present a visual history spanning a hundred-year arc (1870–1970) of what is among the earliest photography on the continent. These images tell a different story of African women: how deeply cosmopolitan and modern they are in their style; how they were able to reclaim the tools of the colonial oppression that threatened their selfhood and livelihoods. — Dates: 29 – 30 April Venue: Foyer of Grassi Museum of Applied Arts. For full programme of the Festival: www.dienacht.eu
Leipzig Photobook Festival ✦ Exhibition: Contemporary African Photography CAP Prize. One of the 3 special events with Focus on Africa is the CAP Prize exhibition. The exhibition shows the five winners of the CAP Prize 2022 selected by an international committee of judges. The prize aims to raise the profile of African photography within the arts and encourage a rethinking of the image of Africa. It is directed at photographers whose work engages with the African continent or its diaspora. It consists of a series of exhibitions in collaboration with significant photography festivals in Africa and the rest of the world. The winners and participants are: Amina Kadous (Egypt), Remofilmoe Nomandla Mayisela (South Africa), Lee-Ann Olwage (South Africa), Mahefa Dimbiniaina Randrianarivelo (Madagascar), Pamela Tulizo (Congo DRC). — Dates: 25 April — 7 May. The dark soul of the dienacht is back with ‘Relaxing Chamber‘ by Aleksei Kazantsev. In anticipation of the major release in November you can get collectible limited edition prints from the book, produced in special techniques exclusively for this release. And also support the publication! Read below ↓ https://www.dienacht-magazine.com/2022/09/15/relaxing-chamber-aleksei-kazantsev . Relaxing Chamber is a continuously developing series of photographs that revolves around one common theme: the idea of consciousness in humans and animals. The images are motifs of human faces and animal forms, often not immediately recognisable. There are claws and tentacles, trusting out, stiffened, at rest. And, there are people, surrounded by a black void, some seemingly asleep, some in an ecstatic trance, others in contemplation. The project circles around the human psyche and is involved with archetypal symbolism of animals in collective unconscious memory, hypnotic state, altered states of consciousness in trance and related phenomena such as feelings of euphoria, isolation and dissociation in everyday life. . In September and October we’ll be offering collectible prints that can be purchased within one week. All prints are in various unconventional techniques. Of course it’s possible to get one, two or none, but if you get all of them, you basically get a unique Special Edition set of the book Relaxing Chamber. All items are numbered and limited. Since the first meeting with Claudia in Mexico, it took quite a while for this project to turn from a dummy into a proper book but we never stopped believing in it and kept it in our dark closet as a hidden gem. And now we are more than happy to finally say: the first photobook by the Mexican photographer Claudia López Ortega "The Three Corners of the Ocean" is ready for pre-order! "This project is about love and the touch of madness in my experience of motherhood. In my family, there are things that are impossible to talk about – although you have been able to sense them since you were a child. There are secrets and looks. There are questions about our female lineage that are never addressed. The silence speaks louder than words. Victoria, my daughter, dared to take a risk and accompanied me into this travesty to express, in her own way, all the feelings rooted deep inside generations of our family. She let me know how sad, lonely and distant she felt from me, just as I felt as a child with my mother and as she felt in turn with my grandmother. These are the three corners of the ocean."
