“I think when we think of bringing our families into our lives and our communities, we often hide ourselves,” shared Annie Tan, a public school teacher and part of our listener community.
“And I think that’s just a natural thing... you don’t want your parents and everyone knowing what you’re doing.
But in hiding yourself, you never get to be the full person that you are. And I think just a part of being in community with people is getting to be vulnerable and show yourself in a way that is honest and allows them to open up and create new possibilities in the community.
So, when I actually started talking with my parents about my activism, my thoughts about community, about my politics, you know, they could open up too.
And it’s not perfect at all, by any means. But, it’s created an opening that’s changed the way I navigate other things in my life, and am able to be open in other parts of my life.”
