Paul Huntsman stepped down as The Salt Lake Tribune chair. We are thus re-sharing a five-part series we wrote about Tribune issues that pertained to Huntsman. They resulted from an interview we did with a former Tribune journalist.
Here's the fifth.

Note: This is Part V in a series of stories about issues that The Salt Lake Tribune has faced.

You may be able to teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.
But if you tell a politician’s campaign a handful of times to not contact you, they may very well not care in any way whatsoever.
In the case of Evan McMullin’s campaign for the U.S. Senate, it may just keep contacting you.

Alliance for a Better Utah, a left-leaning advocacy organization, gave 65% of Utah Republican lawmakers Fs or Ds based on their votes on 51 bills in the 2022 Utah legislative session. The nonprofit’s fifth annual “progress report” has one-quarter of GOP members of the Utah legislature with Fs. Five got negative scores.

None of six Utah Republican candidates opposing Reps. Burgess Owens, Chris Stewart and Blake Moore opposed the three U.S. House members getting Fs and a D, respectively, from a Republican-supporting group.
And three of the four candidates running against Moore didn't speak to him violating a federal law twice, two months apart.

In the first week of the 2022 Utah general legislative session, Republicans in the Utah State Legislature passed a resolution and a bill that halt efforts to protect public health in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Utah’s governor, a political party official and an activist were among the politicos who spoke of problems with the resolution and bill that passed this week.

In order to rush through a bill that would overturn Salt Lake County's mask mandate, GOP leadership accelerated the timeline of the bill so that it would be debated and voted on without a public hearing or opportunity to give public comment, according to Alliance for a Better Utah, a left-leaning political advocacy organization.

“Legislative leaders are actively tying the hands of local leaders who are working hard every day to protect their residents.”

The Republican-controlled Utah legislature concluded a two-day special session by adopting new maps for congressional, Utah House, Utah Senate, and Utah State Board of Education districts. As they were created by Rep. Paul Ray and Sen. Scott Sandall (Republicans and the chairs of the Utah Legislative Redistricting Committee), none were recommended by the Utah Independent Redistricting Commission, which was initially approved by voters. And all of them were “grossly gerrymandered,” according to left-leaning advocacy organization Alliance for a Better Utah.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has indicated that he will not veto the maps, according to media reports.

Republican legislators in the Utah Senate and Utah House of Representatives passed the congressional map approved by Republicans in the Utah Legislative Redistricting Committee. It now goes to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox’s desk, and Cox said last night that he “likely” won’t veto it, according to Deseret News reporter Katie McKellar. The map, which was drawn by Republican Rep. Paul Ray, the committee co-chair, was “grossly gerrymandered,” according to Alliance for a Better Utah.

The Utah Independent Redistricting Commission considered maps drawn by Utahns and gathered around 1,200 comments from the public after holding 32 meetings across the state, spanning six-and-a-half months. Only after doing that did the commissioners present their slate of 12 unanimously recommended maps Monday to the Utah Legislative Redistricting Committee.
Sen. Scott Sandall and Rep. Paul Ray, the committee’s co-chairs, are not recommending any of those maps. Instead, they are proposing their own.

In light of problems revealed by the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation of Utah’s Davis School District, which revealed widespread racism there, the state of Utah government should undertake a full review of all districts and charter schools to assess if similar problems are occurring elsewhere.
That’s what Moe Hickey, executive director of Voices for Utah Children, said.

Just days before the American Legislative Exchange Council’s annual meeting, this year hosted in Salt Lake City, the left-leaning watchdog organizations Center for Media and Democracy and Alliance for a Better Utah filed a campaign finance complaint July 26 with Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson. The complaint is against ALEC, Sen. Lincoln Fillmore, and Sen. Stuart Adams for illegally giving and failing to report the receipt of valuable campaign software linked to the Republican National Committee.

Utah Gov. Utah media falls short, and Utah politicians, really short.

Beehive Blunders was broken by The Salt Lake Tribune’s endorsement of Rep. Mia Love. The newspaper did so despite Love’s admitting to improperly raising campaign funds. And Love did not account even in her own statements for another $372K raised after the 2018 Utah Republican Party nominating convention, aside from the ethical issue of raising $1.15 million beforehand. Beehive Blunders leadership resolved to address the issue as much as it could.

And Utah politicians have long had responsibility for a toxic culture in the state.

Working for several publications in the state of Utah, from local to statewide, rural to urban, Beehive Blunders leadership soon came to realize that Utah’s problems are caused by media in the state as much as any other institutional forces.

Here you will find information about Utah media falling short, and Utah politicians, really short.
