*📰He's got Man Utd in his heart' - Erik ten Hag lauds match-winner Scott McTominay*

In the immediate aftermath of his sensational injury-time double that turned what was threatening to be another awful day for Manchester United on its head, Scott McTominay was asked what his manager had said to him as he prepared to come on as an 87th-minute substitute against Brentford.

"It was very loud," said the midfielder. "The fans were roaring us on so I couldn't hear fully. He probably said something like: 'Go on and score.'"

Informed of this half an hour later, Erik ten Hag couldn't resist an amused smile.

McTominay was wrong.

"I said score two goals," said the Dutchman.
McTominay's introduction was a last desperate throw of the dice as United were about to suffer their third home defeat in a week and experience three home league losses in a row for the first time since 1979.

Brentford were good value for their single-goal lead and Ten Hag had virtually run out of options.

Had the summer turned out differently, neither McTominay nor Harry Maguire, who provided the crucial assist for the Scot's winner, would have still been at United.

In that chaotic last four minutes, the first time United had trailed in stoppage time in a Premier League game they ended up winning, Ten Hag was certainly glad they were.

"He is Manchester United in his heart," said the United boss. "He is playing for the badge and gives his life. When you are coming on and giving this to the team it tells a lot."

West Ham were the club most heavily linked with McTominay as David Moyes pushed to sign his countryman.

But Ten Hag confirmed United's valuation was not met.

"Every player has a price - but he has a big value, sporting and also economic. I want to have a player like Scott McTominay in the squad.

"He is Manchester United in every way. In every minute he will fight for the match. Those players you need."
The lap of honour and euphoric scenes that followed the final whistle were in stark contrast to what was being lined up for Ten Hag and his players had the situation not changed so dramatically.

Yet the result cannot mask what was, for so long, a dire performance.

United are a shadow of the side that performed so well for the first two-thirds of last season and key individuals are well below their best.

The ineffective Marcus Rashford was replaced just after the hour mark and is still with just a single goal to his name all season while Casemiro was substituted at half-time after making the first in a catalogue of errors that led to Brentford's goal.

Manchester City are United's next league visitors to Old Trafford, on 29 October, and many will be fearful of what that might bring on this evidence.

Though he will not see most of his players until the end of the international break, Ten Hag is hoping this win allows a reset for the campaign as a whole.

"In football, it's eat or get eaten," he said.

"Too many times in the first half of the season we have got eaten by opponents who are more hungry, and it can't be. We were not always determined on every occasion in games and you get hammered for it.

"Today, we didn't allow them one shot, had some opportunities and then the same story again; we conceded a goal on a decisive moment with totally the wrong decision from two or three players. We started and were not in formation - it was an easy giveaway and it sums up our season.

"Our players are too good players to act like this. It has to be a turning point but also a restart because we have to get into higher levels."

*📰AU officially admitted as permanent member of the G20*

The African Union (AU) has finally been admitted as a permanent member of the G20. The continental body has joined the world’s richest countries.

South Africa is one of the founding members of the global economic bloc.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is chairing the G20, says the inclusion of the AU will contribute to addressing global challenges.

“With the spirit of togetherness, India had proposed that the African Union be given permanent membership in the G20. I believe that we all agree on this proposal. With the consent of all of you, before proceeding further, I invite the chair of the African Union to take his seat as a permanent member of the G20.”

It was a defining moment as the African Union joined the G20.

The continental body of 55 member states now has the same status as the European Union.

The AU’s previous designation was as an invited international organisation at G20 meetings.

Modi says this is a great step.

“We will have move towards finding solutions to the challenges, including upheaval in the global economy, division between north and south, distant east and west, management of food, fuel, fertilizer, terrorism, cyber security, health, energy, and water security,” says Modi.

South Africa has also been at the forefront of calling for the AU to be admitted to the global forum.

Pretoria says this bodes well for the transformation of multilateral institutions.

Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says, “The G20 is the premier platform for international economic cooperation, but it was never sustainable, and Africa is an integral part of the global economy.

We owe this to India’s leadership of the summit; it signals the steps we would like to see with regards to the reforms of various multilateral platforms and this augurs well in our agenda across the multilateral institutions.”

The Russia-Ukraine conflict is also going to dominate discussions.

British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, says, “When it comes to Ukraine and Russia and their conflict, one thing I will be doing is highlighting the devastating impact that Russia’s illegal invasion is having on millions of people around the world, particularly on food prices. Russia has recently pulled out of the grain deal that we are shipping grain to many poor countries around the world and now you see food prices go up. That is causing suffering to millions of people. That’s not right. So, one of the things we are doing is making people aware of the impact of Russia’s illegal war.”

The two-day gathering, themed One Earth, One Family and One Future, is looking at a myriad of global issues such as inclusive growth, climate resilience, digital innovation and equitable global health access.

The Indian capital is teeming with world leaders who have descended on south Asia and they are hoping to find solutions for a world battling a number of challenges.

“I wish to thank you for the faith you have in me, I truly believe that deciding to have me as your leader was a divine call. You were led by God or you allowed yourselves to listen to God’s guiding. I carry some strange strength within me, I carry the fire that burns within my soul. The strength I carry emanates from the pain and struggles of our people. It emanates from an uncommon faith in the possibility of a better life for our people. My strength emanates from my believe that all the man made Goliaths that bedevil our country can be defeated. Like David I am confident that our Goliath will be crushed too. The team you have selected to serve with me, I welcome them with open arms, enthusiastic and eager to start the ball rolling with them, I am positive that we will make strides towards the liberation of our people,”

*📰Army shelling of market kills dozens as Sudan violence escalates*

At least 30 people died when the Sudanese army shelled a market in Omdurman during what residents of the country’s most populous city described as the worst week for civilian casualties since the outbreak of war in April.

Most of the victims in the incident at the Shaabi souk on Tuesday were children and women, according to witnesses. Medical sources said the shells were fired from the Karri military base, which the army controls, during fierce fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

A vegetable seller who goes to the market on most days to buy his goods wholesale said people trying to steal produce were among the victims. Food prices have risen sharply in recent months and many people living in Omdurman and its sister cities of Khartoum and Bahri have run out of money.

“The majority of the victims were people who had come to loot the market,” the vegetable seller said. “The market has become very dangerous, especially in the afternoon. You can just get shelled and die.”

Another vegetable seller said that as of Thursday some of the victims’ bodies still lay uncovered, and that the bodies of children were covered only by empty boxes.

Like other major Sudanese cities, much of Omdurman has come to resemble a battlefield since clashes broke out between the regular army and the RSF on 15 April, in a violent escalation of a years-long power struggle between the two main factions of the country’s military regime.

Roads around the market have been occupied by army snipers this week after RSF fighters withdrew from positions they had held since the start of the conflict.

Last Saturday, 38 people were killed in Omdurman’s Dar es Salaam neighbourhood in one of the deadliest airstrikes of the war so far, which the RSF blamed on the military.

“It was early in the evening and we were sitting outside with friends when a fighter jet came over,” said Mohamed, a witness who lives in Dar es Salaam and did not want to give his full name. “We saw the light and heard the explosions. Other people’s houses and cars were burned.”

Mohamed said he knew of an entire family who were killed while sleeping on their rooftop. “The father worked selling and buying cattle, it’s just so sad,” he said.

The neighbourhood is mostly populated by members of the Rizagat tribe, to which Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the RSF, and many members of his core force belong.

Mohamed said some of the relatives of the dead were members of the RSF. “They sometimes bring in their fighter vehicles [to the neighbourhood],” he said. “This might be the reason why it was targeted. Many families have now left the area.”

Rizigat families from across Omdurman have fled the city since Saturday’s strike. “We have to go,” said one woman who was setting out for While Nile state, south of the Khartoum tri-city area. “They [the army] killed so many of our relatives. We fear getting targeted by a missile inside our houses.”

In a third mass casualty incident this week, a family of nine died in an airstrike that hit a mosque where they lived in Bahri on Sunday. The father worked at the mosque as a prayer caller.

More than 3 million people have left the Khartoum area since the start of the war, according to the UN, equating to about 50% of the population. Those remaining are mostly unable to leave for health or financial reasons or because they hail from the volatile provinces of Kordofan or Darfur, where fighting has also been particularly fierce.

On Thursday, the UN said the bodies of dozens of people allegedly killed by the RSF had been uncovered in a mass grave in West Darfur. El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, is now besieged by the RSF, and civilians there are struggling to access essentials.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating a surge in hostilities in the Darfur region since mid-April, including reports of killings, rapes and crimes affecting children, the top prosecutor told the United Nations on Thursday
