DAYBREAK // JAKE THE RAPPER
We've asked Jake a few questions as we always want to know more about the person behind the artist.
✫Who are you?
I am Groot. I mean Jake! I am Jake.
✫Is there a difference between Jake the Rapper and Jacob Basker?
Hm, i’ve never considered this question. Yes i guess there is. One is more public and one is more private. The governments certainly see a difference.
✫The time in the morning, when light first appears, what do you usually do or feel?
It depends on what i was doing the night before, how much sleep i got, and what i have planned for the day. It ranges anywhere from, “oh my lord, life is so glorious and beautiful and i lead such a gifted and charmed life, what did i ever do to deserve such good Karma?” All the way to “fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck…”
✫Berlin has been your homebase for many years now, but you are from the Bronx. How do you see these two places as a difference in lifestyle?
Well I spent about 6 months of my life in the Bronx. I never lived in a single city for more than 3 years of my life until I moved to Germany when I was 20. Then it was 15 years of Hamburg and now 17 years of Berlin. So, I’m really not qualified to answer that specific question. I have spent more of my life in Germany than the USA now, but the first 20 years were more formative. So I still see myself as an American. But my American friends always laugh at me when i talk about “home”, because it's like I just came out of a time machine from 1989. It's a different place now and actually quite foreign to me, sadly.
✫And where does Amsterdam fit into that analysis?
I love Amsterdam. My favorite cities, and it's hard to put them in any kind order are: Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, New York, San Francisco, and Zürich. Ok, I guess I put them in alphabetical order. And a lot of this has to do with the people and the party crews I know there. Its special when you really get a lot of great, inspiring, motivated people together in a city and they create a vibrant scene. All of these places have that. It’s beautiful. And special.
✫What's the story behind your tattoo 'Cognitive Dissonance'?
When I first heard about cognitive dissonance it blew my mind. A tattoo artist from Mexico named Mikey was coming through Berlin and my friend Noba asked if I wanted a tattoo and I immediately knew
What I wanted. I got the tattoo as a reflection on the waves of energy, intention, expectation, hesitation, comparison and cognitive dissonance i was feeling as i stood in front of crowds dj-ing, I felt like waves of it all crashing over me constantly. Only after I got the tattoo did I get a deeper meaning of what that meant and, more importantly, what a person can do about it to remove themselves from a situation where cognitive dissonance is kicking in hard to make them accept a situation they shouldn’t necessarily be in, and if they don’t change it or accept it and fine cognitive harmony, a third thing will happen, the body will strike and get sick.
✫What do you wanna shine your light on in life?
Everyone. And my family. And not in that order.
✫Why are you here?
On this planet or Amsterdam or Daybreak? On this planet: ooh please tell me, i’m dying to know! Daybreak: to tell my life’s story in music.
