Feeling so extra grateful today for a healthy body — 11 years after a cancer diagnosis I’m still in awe that I get to be here and experience all of these things.

Grateful for healthy relationships — lots of trial and error over the years and I’ve landed in a place where I love my close friends and family fiercely.

In the coming year I’m going to be embarking on some new studies and I’ll share more soon. For now I’ll just say that I hope to share what I’ve learned over the years more directly. I hope to be even more of a helper.

Sending you all big love and gratitude today and always!

Several months ago, Jason came to me with a big smile and a crazy look in his eyes and I knew that a new “creative project,” was brewing. He told me about it in great detail and, ever the editor, I reeled him in. (Let’s just say he wanted to do 20 episodes and I eventually got him down to 4. 😉)

His idea is now ready for your viewing: It’s a 4-part docuseries featuring the journey of 3 yoga students, Laurel, Raquel, and Erin, and their journey to becoming yoga teachers.

I haven’t seen Jason this excited about a creative project in some time, and I know why: For starters, Jason and I both thrive in one-on-one settings, and he truly loved getting to know them even better.

The other reason is that it is truly delightful to feature students’ stories. The truth is that all the work we do here always comes back to you, the students. Without you, Jason and I would just be sitting in our garage talking to each other about yoga. It’s the experience of watching your confidence build, your connection to your body-mind deepen, and your classes grow that lights us up and keeps us going.

This project is a fun, relatable, informative look at a few students in our community and their stories. We hope you enjoy it, and we hope to hear from you — what did you find relatable? A relief to hear? Inspiring? Let us know 🫶

We’re back for another episode of Yogaish! This week Jason shares how his ADHD brain feels when it vacillates between hyper focus and demand avoidance. Andrea asks for some dream analysis. Plus, we share a quirky holiday fail and how Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour reminded us of how important it is to take in positive media and messaging.

Enjoy the carousel — I gathered some moments that reflect the episode. 💃🧠🤵‍♂️

So thrilled to have Dr. Daya Grant join me again on the podcast this week! You may remember .dayagrant from episode 258 (This is Your Brain on Yoga).

I so appreciate Daya’s practical and accessible approach — she effortlessly combines her knowledge as a neuroscientist and her lived wisdom as a lifelong yogi and presents relevant studies and tools with us.

Some highlights of what she shares in this episode:

✨ Which mental performance tools she used to finish a half marathon (less than a year after giving birth to her second child!)

✨ How exercise upregulates the protein brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the ways this is beneficial for the brain

✨ How exercising during high stress times can mediate our stress response and create more resilience in the future

✨ How mantra and dristhi have been studied and shown to help settle the mind

✨ The neuroscience of flow states and the four stages of flow

✨ Samadhi -- Daya and I have a similar interpretation on this for householders

Here's an armchair psychologist moment for you: I see a lot of criticism of the modern yoga movement as being too "self" oriented and, therefore, selfish.

Respectfully, I couldn't disagree more. Most people move through life unconsciuosly and in a haze, completely unaware of how their own inner state -- their inner narrator, their stress coping skills, and the way they feel in their body -- affects those around them. Yoga helps us to facilitate inward focus so that we become aware of, and hopefully more skillful around, these things.

Stay with me here: When you have something stressful happen, how likely are you to snap at your spouse/kid/poor unsuspecting cat? How about after you've had 30-60 minutes to tune into your breath and your inner sensations?

I thought so 🤔 👀

This week on the podcast Jason and I talk through four life skills for yoga teachers to cultivate. These skills are also the weekly themes around which we've built our new online course, Mind-Body Reset.

They are:
⚡️ Self-Compassion
⚡️Self-Awareness
⚡️Self-Regulation
⚡️Self-Direction

Focusing on these skills is the furthest thing from selfish. They will help you feel more comfortable in your own skin and, as such, you'll be better able to show up for your students and loved ones from a place of steadiness, compassion, and clarity.
