MARGATE FALL FUNFEST CANCELED

The iconic and always fun send-off of summer and hello to fall in Margate is canceled due to the looming rain and high winds predicted for this weekend.

Saturday, September 23rd 11AM-6PM & Sunday, September 24th 11AM-4PM

The 22nd Annual Margate Fall Funfest by the Bay committee will be cancelling the event for this upcoming weekend, September 23rd & 24th, due to Public Safety concerns surrounding upcoming severe weather. The potential of high winds, heavy rain, and possible coastal flooding during the day and evening Saturday and Sunday, have created a situation where Funfest cannot safely operate. The event historically has over 125 vendors and experiences, rows of tents and inflatable attractions, all of which would be greatly impacted by the forecast conditions.

“We are heartbroken to have to cancel our marquee event”, said Ed Berger, President of the Margate Business Association. “We consulted several local meteorologists, local public safety officials and experts, and although none of us wanted to see this happen, we have to think of the safety of the thousands of people that come enjoy and participate in Funfest every year”.

Margate Fall Funfest on the Bay has only been cancelled once in it’s 22 year history.

The spotted lantern fly nymphs are in gardens in and around Linwood, Northfield, and Somers Point.
If you haven’t seen them yet, look closer. They are insidious little things that have no productive purpose in your garden. They are prolific and will damage your tender plants and trees. Take a look at the lifecycle and familiarize yourself with the stages and what you can do to get rid of them.

I posted this recently in our stories, and received comments from people who didn’t realize what the lanternfly looked like at the earlier instar stages, so I’m reposting it here (thanks to )

WATCH FOR THESE, KILL AT ANY STAGE 💀💀💀 currently in our area, we’re mostly seeing the second and third instar (nymph stages). ⁣

Kudos to Northfield PD

The Crime Suppression Unit South of the New Jersey State Police and the Northfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division conducted a three-month-long narcotics

EARTH DAY

Let's all try to remember that each person can do their part to help improve the environment in their corner of the planet. Recycle, turn off the water, carry water in your reusable bottle, plant a tree, or use LED lights in your home. It all adds up.

Sunday is the ACUA annual Earth Day Celebration at the Environmental Park from 10 am-4 pm. It's free, fun, and very informative.

The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) invites the community to join them for their 31st Annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Environmental Park at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.

ACUA’s annual festival is the largest and longest-running Earth Day Festival in South Jersey. The Authority expects to welcome around 10,000 guests for the celebration of our collective home, Earth.

The festival will include more than 150 local vendors, crafters, exhibitors, interactive entertainers, and musicians. ACUA’s Earth Day offers a range of activities for all ages. Visitors can tour ACUA’s Recycling Center, take a hayride to the top of Atlantic County’s landfill, and take a free shuttle to tour the wastewater treatment plant while learning how wind turbines and solar panels help to power the treatment process. Other fun activities for kids include Touch-A-Truck, interactive performances, live animal shows, and a petting zoo. There will also be free seeds and seedlings, composting demonstrations, a guided tour through the native plant garden, mini yoga sessions, and a sound bowl session. It is a perfect opportunity to learn about the environment while having fun and enjoying the day with family and friends.

Free workshops are scheduled throughout the day covering various topics including canine interactions for children, an introduction to homesteading, frogs, and toads of South Jersey, an informational session about the spotted lanternfly, an overview of the Stockton University Maple Project, and a rain barrel demonstration.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to celebrate Earth Day with us again this year,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “The celebration has grown each year with help from community partners and thanks to the enthusiasm of our visitors. The event helps to instill an appreciation for the environment, educates the community about the important work we do here at ACUA, and highlights the accomplishments of many community groups and organizations in our area.”

The Planets Align This Week

Keep looking up and you might just catch a rather rare sight as five planets-Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, and Mars will line up near the moon.

BEST TIME AND PLACE TO CATCH THIS PLANETARY HANGOUT:

The best day to catch the whole group is Tuesday. You’ll want to look to the western horizon right after sunset, said NASA astronomer Bill Cooke.

The planets will stretch from the horizon line to around halfway up the night sky. But don’t be late: Mercury and Jupiter will quickly dip below the horizon around half an hour after sunset.

Sunset over South Jersey on Tuesday, March 28 is at 7:18 p.m.

The five-planet spread can be seen from anywhere on Earth, as long as you have clear skies and a view of the west.

Cross your fingers and hope for a clear evening and keep your eyes on the sky.

Seashore Gardens Living Center is Sold to Atlas Healthcare

GALLOWAY TWP — The Board of Seashore Gardens Living Center announced today that an agreement has been reached to sell the home to Atlas Healthcare Group.

The Board cited fiscal challenges, particularly the persistent and increasing gap between Medicaid reimbursement rates and the cost of caring for residents, as a reason for the sale.

The pandemic exacerbated these challenges, which imposed significant additional costs associated with protecting residents and staff. COVID-19 led to a sharp reduction in revenue due to a declining population of residents staying at skilled nursing facilities.

Persistent staffing shortages also have limited the number of residents Seashore Gardens Living Center has been able to accept, thereby further reducing revenues. Similar reasons were cited as challenges for other senior care facilities across the country.

“Simply put, a single home provider, such as ours, doesn’t have the long-term resources to weather this perfect storm,” said Martin H. Klein, President, and CEO of Seashore Gardens Living Center. “We decided the best option for our residents and staff was to transfer ownership to an organization with the scale and resources to uphold the high standards for which we are known.”

Atlas Healthcare is a patient-centered organization that includes in its mission to provide a continuum of health services in a safe and welcoming environment that respects Jewish values, traditions, and lifestyles and that emphasizes quality of life and human dignity.

“As the owner/operator of Atlas Healthcare, we are committed to providing the same high quality of care for which Seashore Gardens has been known all these years,” said Atlas Healthcare CEO Phil Bak.

The sale will not include Seashore Elder Housing or the Seashore Gardens Foundation. This will enable Seashore Gardens Foundation to continue to provide programming and services without the same restrictions and regulations.

“We have a rich history in Jewish philanthropy and enriching elder lives,” said Rich Cohen, president, of Seashore Gardens Foundation. “We will continue that legacy in this next chapter of our storied history. The Foundation will be expanding to serve the elder community at large.”

The Foundation’s core priorities will be Alzheimer’s and dementia services and outreach, intergenerational programs, education, and resources for caregivers and elder care professionals.

Seashore Gardens Living Center will continue operations separately from the Foundation. “We are looking forward to working with Atlas Healthcare Group and know this will provide a bright future for our residents and staff,” said Alysia Price, executive director of Seashore Gardens Living Center.

Atlas Healthcare owns, operates, and manages 11 skilled nursing facilities in New Jersey, one assisted living facility, and Atlas Rehab at Daughters of Miriam.
