No Church Answers We are a Christian podcast discussion that each week looks at a Bible scripture. We believe all men are leaders, but sometimes the lead dog needs to be fed.

We aim to go beyond rote Sunday School responses and find special relevance for men. No Church Answers! was previously known as Man Up Spiritual Oasis. It started as a men's Bible study group at Sugar Land Baptist Church, Sugar Land, Texas.

What is the Christian idea of a flourishing, abundant life? Can the Bible's metaphorical green pastures measure up to a 10,000-acre Texas ranch? And can people flourish in exile, as Jeremiah urges? Download and listen before you buy that next graduation card!

We wrap up our study of Rod Dreher's The Benedict Option debating the author's contentious view of the Internet, social media and the accompanying cultural message to envelope oneself in a virtual world to escape the real one. We add a discussion of AI, which has exploded since Dreher published, and what ethical questions it raises for Christians. And is "Transhumanism," Raymond Kurzweil's vision of combining humanity with AI, an attainable goal or a false idol? Can technology create a better human being or is it doomed to be a post-modern Tower of Babel?

Even as the media and elites attempt to glamorize and promote hook-up culture and po*******hy as liberating choices, there is growing pushback from many young people, religious or not, who see something terribly wrong with these messages. Christians, in reaching out to those seeking deep and committed love, can provide the vocabulary they need to validate their countercultural decisions. We continue with our look at The Benedict Option and the Bible's ringing endorsement of God's gift of human sexuality and physical intimacy.

It's Halloween, so the fellows discuss what Bible authors might have meant when they condemned witchcraft and sorcery. Rather than supernatural black magic, were they pointing to talented manipulators whom today we would call narcissists and psychopaths--persons who know there is no greater human flaw than the ability to fool oneself? Jeffrey Epstein and the Sacker Family were welcomed within commanding heights of politics, commerce and culture while committing heinous crimes in plain sight. Are Christians vulnerable to modern "spells" that use the psychology of gaslighting, rationalization and distorted facts to convince others that they don't see what's obvious? If so, how do we fight for truth?

As we continue our look at Rod Dreher’s The Benedict Option, we debate his call for Christians to forsake public schools for private schools and home schooling. At the university level, was something important lost when colleges casually tossed aside core liberal arts requirements? Closer to home, how should churches restructure their own Christian education programs to teach ideas of objective morality, truth and beauty that modern academia denies exist? Dreher sees both the appreciation and acknowledgement of God’s creation as entwined in all learning. Do you agree? Listen and comment.

We begin a study of Rod Dreher's controversial 2017 book, subtitled "A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation." In the opener of the series, we look at the life and contributions of St. Benedict (c.480-c.547), and how Dreher urges readers to step away from the relentless antagonism of the culture wars and apply Benedict's emphasis on repentance, self-sacrificial love, purity of heart and the Way of the Cross as way of pointing others to Christ--and a truly fulfilling life.

The phrase "spare the rod and spoil the child" is not in the Bible. But the Book of Proverbs does address the value of disciplining your children. The fellows discuss whether the Bible endorses corporal punishment or if parents misuse scripture as an excuse to vent their anger on their kids. We also try to interpret what "spare the rod" means in 2024, when so many young men "fail to launch." Finally, we discuss the value of church youth ministries in supporting parents in raising kids into functional, responsible adults who can take care of themselves and others. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-337-spare-the-rod-proverbs-13-24/id1288230544?i=1000669793750

We discuss the juxtaposition of Wisdom and Folly in the Book of Proverbs and the biblical assertion that there is objective, divine, discernable Truth that God infused within creation. We contrast this with the modern folly, particularly the ideas of moral relativism and academic nihilism, which tell us the world is only what we make of it and if we wish it, 2+2 can equal 5. Join us as we try to identify the traits of true wisdom and the traps of worldly folly.

In a super-sized podcast before our summer break, we take a deep dive into Season 3 of The Chosen. Jesus’s disciples attempt to live by his teachings, doing their best to speak plainly, forgive and put others first. We talk about the modern overtones in the relationships between Simon and Eden, Mary and Tamar, and Matthew and his parents, as well as the series' portrayal of the hostility the new Gospel was bringing in places like the Decapolis. In a provocative podcast, we talk about whether God makes any distinction in severity among sins. We touch on the Catholic doctrine of mortal and venial sins, and contrast that with Paul's assertion that the wages of sin--all sin--is death. We question why, if adultery is against God's law, did Israel's patriarchs and kings get a pass for multiple wives and concubines while being judged and punished for other forms of disobedience. And we look at the New Testament teachings on sin, grace and forgiveness and to where that points.

Is the Sermon on the Mount analogous to an RPG strategy guide? The fellows are mischievous enough to suggest it. If our Christian mission is to work alongside God to reflect and nurture the Kingdom of God on earth, Jesus give us an awful lot of information as to how to do it successfully, right up to the counterintuitive advice of "Enter through the narrow gate," a section we discuss this week.

Material wealth won't last. Worry accomplishes nothing. Judgment leads to hypocrisy. These sections of the Sermon on the Mount get to the heart of its counterculture nature. Seek first the Kingdom of God and all we need will be given to us. This is hard to believe. Yet for Christians it stands as a promise from the Son of God himself and therefore demands to be taken seriously. Join the fellows as they discuss the ramifications of these pointed verses.

Jesus teaches the Christian approach to religious disciplines of charity, prayer and fasting should be practiced with humility. The fellows discuss the definition of true humility, which lies somewhere between boastful arrogance and self-erasure.
