Loki Mulholland, Executive Director of The Joan Trumpauer Mulholland Foundation, launches his latest film project, "Dying to Vote," with a resounding call to action: "It's all hands on deck!" Reflecting on his filmmaking journey driven by societal urgencies, Loki emphasizes the perpetual motion from one project to the next.

Following the completion of his previous work, "Emmett Till: White Lies, Black Death," after a five-year journey alongside other cinematic endeavors, the looming election year's reality spurred Loki into action. Recognizing the election's pivotal role in shaping the nation's trajectory, he felt compelled to illuminate the historical backdrop of voter intimidation in America through "Dying to Vote."

The film delves into this narrative, spotlighting individuals who made profound sacrifices for the fundamental right to vote, such as Vernon Dahmer, a fearless civil rights leader in Mississippi. Inspired by his mother's legacy and moved by the impassioned plea of Reena Evers, daughter of Medgar Evers, Loki aimed to contribute to the mobilization for this critical election year.

Departing from traditional streaming platforms, the film encourages organizations to host free screenings, fostering discussions on the importance of voting. With accessibility and impact in mind, this 32-minute film catalyzes reflection and engagement. Visit www.dyingtovote.org for further details.

Last night, I learned the sad news that Mr. George Sallie passed away at the age of 94 years old. A Korean War veteran, he became a Foot Soldier at 36 years old, and marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday. However, what was even more remarkable was what he did after he was attacked that truly sets him apart.

I had the honor of capturing his story in an award-winning short documentary. God bless you Mr. Sallie.

In 1965, George Sallie was attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge during Bloody Sunday. One day, he decided to do something that many to this day can scarcely imagine.

From the Washington Post:

“God only knows where I would be today” if not for the legal principles of equal employment opportunity measures such as affirmative action that are “critical to minorities and women in this society. These laws and their proper application are all that stand between the first 17 years of my life and the second 17 years,” Clarence Thomas, EEOC chairman, 1983.

Thank you again to the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington for honoring Joan. The event was beautiful… The exhibition includes the dress she wore in the Arlington Sit-in photos, the Bible she carried with her during the demonstrations and a special pillow given to her by her roommate, Sorority sister and fellow activist Joyce Ladner when she graduated from Tougaloo College. Thank you to all who made it out (Sorors outnumbered everyone).

Yesterday, Joan received the highest honor a citizen of Virginia can receive as the Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears presented her with a resolution in her honor. They passed a motion to suspend the rules to allow us on the floor. She was again recognized from the gallery in the house with moving words and a standing ovation.

Many thanks to Patrick Hope and Senator Barbara Favola for making this happen.

In 2019 while making the award-winning film"After Selma", Joanne Blackmon Bland told me a story about a man name George Sallie. Last December we spent two days capturing it for this short doc.

George Sallie is 92 years old and everyday he does the exact same thing... he forgives the man who beat him in 1965 on Bloody Sunday.

We stand in solidarity and love with the family members and loved ones of those who fell victim in the Buffalo, NY shooting. It is very clear that this terrible act was racially motivated. Flashback Podcast: Part 1 - White Privilege: A Courageous Conversation with Curtis Linton. When it comes to racism, many white Americans can intellectualize it and some can personalize it through the experience of others but the real change will happen when white Americans understand their place in it and move to change that balance of privilege afforded to them merely because of the color of their skin...

Flashback Podcast: Civil Rights Movement - An Interview with Joan Trumpauer Mulholland - Part 1

She was an unlikely hero of the Civil Rights Movement. By the time she was 19 years old she was involved in over three dozen sit-ins and protests when she joined the Freedom Rides and was put on death row but that's just the beginning of her story.
