Mantra 👁🔮

July was a tricky month. My entire collection of 7"s lost - suspected stolen. Gigs I'm promoting planned & booked for future months under threat. Soundsystem woes & general life woes. The total lack of a proper summer in Scotland, the world on fire - the list goes on.

Music is a tough business and I have ultimate respect for any and all who can handle the ride. In times like this I rest, recalibrate and reach for selections that uplift me everytime & keep me trodding the path. This one from Samory I has been an absolute mantra lately.

If you ever have doubts about your journey through music (& life!), you're not alone. Rest if you must, but do not quit. Let the music play.

Super special scenes at Kelburn Garden Party 🛸🚀💫

Without doubt one of the fattest sets I've ever played, one of my all time favourites, on the sickest of stages too. Those visuals! Dem lazers! Still rolling in the vibes from such an amazing evening ☺️

The purists hate when I stray away from reggae/dub, and bring basshall (+ more outer-reaches of soundsystem culture subgenres), into my sets. What a lot of people don't know is my "day job" is a radio presenter for the BBC; my musical tastes aren't limited to dub, and performances where I get to select from an expanse of musical genres are far too much fun to turn down 💃

Tonight at 9pm on the Landing Stage 🛸

I played my first set here on a tiny stage 6 years ago, to make my way onto the monster of a setting that is the Landing is one of my proudest achievements. Kelburn is such a magic place to me, some of my best dancing has been done in these glens; as a result I'm not sticking to reggae tonight, but instead a deep dive through bass-dancehall fusion and garage too ✨️🥳💫

MALTA: I MADE IT 🌞

4 years and 4 attempts later, I finally got to mash it up in Malta, connect with so many amazing crew, DISconnect from digital life and take a few days for some serious R&R in the sun 🌴

Things have been pretty horrendous in the fox den the last few weeks. It's a bit of serendipity that Aba Shanti-I always seems to appear in Scotland when I need rootikal upliftment the most.

Hearing him run my friends 10,000 Lions Sound System / I-tal Soup Records / Petah Sunday production in Glasgow's Queens Park was surreal and special.
Rounding off with Habesh*tes x Vibronics Polarity Dub and a special dedication on the 🎤 to his sweetheart, reminded me - necessarily, right now - that love always wins.

Apres-ski in Scotland? Completed it mate ✅️

This weekend of snowsports and skanking up at Glencoe Mountain Resort was unbelievable.
An absolute testament to the power of faith, patience, community, JAH! 👁💛

A truly crazy week in the run up to the event meant that there were many, many moments I didn't think we would be able to go ahead, and I'd have to cancel everything. Vans & cars breaking down left right and centre; babies arriving a month earlier than expected 🤰, and so much more unexpected drama in already an absolutely rammed week, meant I had literally just a few hours to ensure I could plug and run the whole soundsystem by myself for the first time EVER 😬.

This sound is usually run by myself and my close pal, selecta Vitamin T. He's good at science and frequencies; I'm good at people and music; together we are the perfect soundsystem companions, picking up where the other can't. So you can imagine the pressure to adopt both roles at the LAST MINUTE 😅 and yet... everything sang sweet, was setup EARLY and nothing blew up - even after playing on the mountain in crazy, full-snow conditions 🥳❄️ years of training with the "big boy sounds" paying off. I am *SO PROUD* of myself. Reckon I'll bring the full stack next time, not just half 😉

Huge massive thanks to Lion Hed Events for organising and getting me involved, every sick selector who came to play, everyone who danced on the slopes, all posse and crew who gave me a hand with vehicles, box lifting, and the rest. What a wonderful gang we have. 🫂

No big speeches or platitudes today. Just a call to arms, to ALL promoters and events organisers, to open your eyes to musical inequality.

There is not a single corner of the world, and particularly here in the UK, where female representation in soundsystem has no room for improvement. 👁

What are YOU, big ram-dance bookers, doing to change that? What risks do YOU take? Or do you just book the same 10 names on a rinse & repeat 😴💤🥱?

No space, scene or genre should be a boy's club and we can *all* do better. Your once-a-year "All Queens" lineup just doesn’t cut it. ❌️

Time for a reintroduction 👋🦊👇

I'm V***n. I've been a selector for 13 years; focussed on reggae & dub for 10 of those years, and DJing live since 2017. I now have my own sound, Iron Aye HiFi (& I'm lucky enough that *some* of the rig is currently living in my house!) I also present & produce radio for the BBC. It's all about the music 🙏

For me, dub & reggae music is the closest to having faith or religion, I'll ever get. I've always been a spiritual person; music is my personification of that.

In my personal life, the last decade or so was filled with many challenges & mountains to climb, internal and external. The power & resilience of this music is definitely what kept me sane & trodding the path. Shaka described soundsystem as a tool which can be used to promote your values, a mission which resonates deeply. My values are held in desire, to create a space within the dance where you never feel alone in the recognition of the world's injustices; simultaneously I want to make a place where all woes & worries can be left at the door for pure upliftment. I deeply believe music should be a well of resilience which you can pull from in time of need. Anytime you hear a set from me, please know that all selections are deeply considered & respected. I don't come from a city, family, or culture where dub and soundsystem naturally reside, meaning that my immersion in this sound is truly because it resonates my soul. Each track from me to you tells a tale, & is delivered with my full-force positive energy 🌟

Until I started DJing, I'd never travelled outwith Europe, never imagined I would or could. I'm honoured beyond measure that now, this pure love of music has taken me all across the globe. It's not a job I take lightly - it's my life's mission, and I'm continually proud to represent Scotland's selectors: a country critically overlooked in terms of music. ❤️‍🔥

I've been sowing a lot of seeds to set up 2024 for some epic runnings, & can't wait to see stuff start to come to fruition 🍊. I've been busy behind the mic & mixing desk, and rumour has it there's some new events coming to this neck of the woods...🤫😉

CALLING ALL DUBCAMP POSSE 🗣

I'm en route to Geneva to play there Saturday - but not without a quick stop at Dub Camp Festival Officiel first 🚨🚨

An Dannsa Dub play TONIGHT, 7pm at the Dub Club Arena. When Tom Spirals made the first ever riddim for An Dannsa Dub in our house in the Scottish hills 🏞, he turned to me and said "I want to take this project to Dubcamp". Less than 2 years later, here we are, because the magic of this band's sound is undeniable. I'm so proud of him and the whole crew.

If you're at Dubcamp and we've ever met, it would be an absolute pleasure to see you at 7pm to celebrate traditional Scottish music blended with dub on an international stage. If you're reading this and don't know any of us personally, please take my word for it that a full live band performance at Dubcamp is a particularly special moment and these guys are set to be THEEEE highlight of your weekend. Heart bursting with love 🇩🇪🦊🙏

I used to live in Berlin when I was 19, everytime I think back to how much I loved it I wonder if I'm hyping it up too much in my head, as it was my first solo extended period of time away internationally. And then I go back to Germany... and see it wasn't hype at all, it was real. Vibes, hospitality and love on top, each and every time - and Fusion was the perfect example of that. 1000% family settings, very very emotional to see (and meet) SO MANY wonderful people from across the world, many of whom I've not got to squeeze since pre-pandemic 🥲💗

Thank you Rootsbase family for making us so welcome. I'll remember that session forever. Huge love to Siren Sisters and Jah Chalice Soundsystem for the booking, Dandelion Soundsystem for the insane sound quality, and special dedication to the gals Set Ambessa and the one and only Roots Daughters Soundsystem for the glorious reminders that we are musically much stronger when patriarchal ego systems are left behind ✊️👑

What a time at Glastonbury 🥹🫶

The Glastonbury experience was a total feast for the soul & senses. So many wonderful people, performances, and pals. Lots of happy skankers at my sets. Tons of excellent/political art which I really rate 🙌 Participating in the Solstice ceremony at the standing stones, and seeing Channel One Sound System rip out arguably the most special set I've ever seen from them, was particularly uplifting 💚

Few days to catch my breath before off to play Rootsbase at Fusion Festival Music this weekend! 🇩🇪🦊🔊

Latest release 🤝 oldest vinyl The newest & oldest Mungo's Hi Fi // Scotch Bonnet Records releases are both in my hands! Came across this OG copy of Ing, whilst doing a bit of digging a few summers ago, hiding away for only £5. I think it's an original pressing (?!) - a bit of history in my hands! Seemed apt to put them together given the new album is titled "Past & Present". The title track is a very special one to me. Vinyl available for pre-order now on the Scotch Bonnet bandcamp 💌

Not the kind to stand in line ♀️💪 An international women's day gift from me to you: I relicked this (my potentially all-time favourite roots) tune for all the sound sisters I've met and continue to meet, who give me so much inspiration. I would never have done so many incredible things without the amazing women around me, both in music and life. Never bow down, never stand in line 👸 This wee gift also goes to the skankers that joined us for Iron Aye Hifi's first dance last month. V***n ting!

V***n Sound is a dub, reggae and dancehall selector. Cutting her musical teeth as a radio presenter for the past ten years, but only playing out live since late 2017, V***n’s quick ascent has seen her tour internationally across 10 countries so far; and share stages with Channel One Soundsystem, Manudigital, OBF Soundsystem & The A1 crew, Aba Shanti I, Vibronics and David Rodigan to name a but a few. You can find V***n in residency at Mungo’s Hi Fi’s weekly club night Walk n Skank, which she now runs, as well as hosting the internationally-recognised Walk n Skank radio live streams; or representing the mighty Sinai Sound System, the first system to ever appear on Boiler Room, as a selector. You can also catch her running her own club nights in Glasgow: More Fire! at Flat 0/1, and V***n Dub, an all-female collective of Scottish soundsystem women, at The Blue Arrow.
