Strategic use of hashtags helps new people find and follow you. The hashtags you use should be relevant to your topic and audience.

Don't worry about using the most popular hashtags. Create ones unique to your book. As an example, search here on Facebook using the hashtag and you'll find some great posts by Carma Spence, Founder, The Author Switch - and perhaps some of my posts too. ;)

First you need to know who your target audience is. Then find out what appeals to them. At that point you'll know what you can offer. It might be information they need, a discount on a product or service, or a freebie of some sort.

Amazon made some changes recently to their Author pages. I'm not thrilled with them all since you can no longer include additional images, videos, or your blog feed link.

However, there are two updates that I'm excited about.

1. Once you have 20 followers, you can see how many followers you have in your Reports & Marketing tab.

One of the best ways to use social media to increase the number of followers and people interested in your business and/or book is to create content that is interesting enough to share.

In my line of work, I get the most business from referrals. So providing a testimonial for other people to share with their followers works well for me.
