Episode 2 of our deep dive into the phenomenon known as ‘zouxian’ is now online. Why are so many Chinese migrants taking a risky overland route to the United States, and what happens once they get there?

Photo taken near the end of our shoot in Los Angeles last year. We’d spent several months investigating a phenomenon known as ‘zouxian’ or ‘walking route’. On Chinese social media, the term refers to a perilous overland expedition through Latin America to the southern US border. Nearly every person in this picture knows what it means to be on that journey. Their goal: asylum and a new life in a new country.

The migrants we met spoke of terrifying boat rides, exhausting treks through dense rainforest, encounters with corrupt officials, conmen and gun-wielding gangsters, hunger, uncertainty and indescribable fear. Their stories are remarkable, but they are also not unique. A record number of Chinese took the walking route in 2023. The figure is likely to grow this year.

What’s behind these desperate journeys? What happens to the migrants once they arrive? Watch part 1 of our report here:

, 16 June, 2019. Roads, jam-packed with Hong Kongers dressed in black - to mourn the passing of protestor, Marco Leung Ling-kit, who had fallen to his death a day earlier.

The demonstration was one of the biggest Hong Kong had ever seen. Organisers estimated a turnout of 2 million + 1. The +1, they said, was Marco, whose spirit marched with them.

Summer 2019. Hong Kong’s leaderless pro-democracy movement stuns Beijing and captures the world’s attention. ‘If We Burn’ is an urgent, immersive journey into the protests, and a meditation on what it means to resist.

'If We Burn' is number 8 on this list, with a score of 4.625 out of 5. Given the film's length and the fact that audiences have described it as "brutal", "challenging" and "traumatising", we were really not expecting this. Big thank you to everyone who voted.

'If We Burn', our documentary about the 2019 Hong Kong protests will be having its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Hundreds of thousands of men and women fill the streets of Hong Kong, wielding umbrellas as armour. Police brandish batons, and tear gas canisters explode. It is June 2019, and the city’s governor Carrie Lam is attempting to pass a bill allowing China to extradite people to the mainland for trial....

"Candle in the Wind", our latest documentary for 101 East - Al Jazeera is now online.

A year after China imposed a national security law on Hong Kong, the city is a different place and dissent, a dangerous business. But despite the risks, some Hong Kongers refuse to be silenced. We spent many days this past summer following three of them.

Hang Tung Chow, 黃浩銘 Raphael Wong and 王逸戰 Wong Yat Chin were generous with their time and answered our many questions with humour and patience.

Shortly after we wrapped, Hang-tung was arrested and charged with "inciting subversion". She's been denied bail.

Raphael was handed a 14-month sentence for organising an unlawful assembly during the 2019 protests.

Twenty-year old Yat-chin faces multiple charges, but remains free, at least for now.

In Hong Kong, dissent has become a dangerous business. Activists have been jailed and many opposition politicians have been imprisoned and are facing crimina...

Our latest documentary for Al Jazeera's People and Power is now online.

Nearly a year ago, as the Singapore government started imposing sweeping measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 inside migrant worker dormitories, some residents began documenting their lives under lockdown for us. They sent us hours and hours of footage and shared regular updates on the events that were unfolding around them. This documentary is their story of the pandemic.

Thank you Jowel, Amin, Asit, 'BG', Nilsagar, Munna and Kiron. We know these past few months have been traumatic, to say the least. And yet you continued answering our questions. You kept filming even when you fell sick, when you were getting sent home, when you were afraid. Some of you even welcomed our crew into your homes in Bangladesh.

Thanks also to Dr Jeremy Lim, Dr Paul Tambyah, Dr Sudesna Roy Chowdhury, Alex Au and ‘Simon’ for speaking to us.

This is the first time we've made a documentary without filming anything ourselves. The pandemic kept derailing our travel plans and shooting schedule. Thank goodness for brilliant support in Singapore from producer Kirsten Han, cameraman Eric Youwei Lin, and researchers Subhas Nair and Weilee Yap. Not naming the team in Bangladesh for security reasons not linked to this project - you know who you are.
