NAOSS UDUS Set to Organize Orientation Program For New Members

The National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS), Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) chapter is set to organize an orientation program for newly admitted students from Osun state on Sunday, 14th April, 2024 at A20 lecture hall (FAIS building).

The aim of organizing the orientation is to enlighten the new students on the rules and regulations that must be followed on campus and the necessary information to aid their successful academic pursuit on the soil of UDUS.

While speaking with the president of the union, Comrade Ahmad Sodiq (Googa), said the focus of the association in organizing the program is to shed light on do's and don'ts of the university and to establish familiarity between the students and the association's staff advisers.

He explained, “Some of them might be in Association before their arrival here (UDUS) but this is a new life, new environment, and every society has what they cherish and value. Indeed, we need to guide and counsel them so that they will not go astray and do what will make them graduate before their graduation time.”

“Experience is significant, we want to share our experiences and encourage them to face their primary assignment so they may start accumulating standard Grade Points (GP) from now before getting late.

“More so, the rules and regulations on a dressing code along with character will be addressed properly.”

However, the union encouraged all Osun State Students, or NAOSSITES and others to be in attendance for the benefit of the orientation day and the future opportunities it holds.

NAOSS-UDUS Holds first Congress

The National Association of Osun State Student (NAOSS), Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) held its first congress for the 2023/2024 academic session on Saturday,24 February, 2024

The congress which was held at A40 lecture hall in the school permanent site was presided over by the President, Comrade Ahmad Sodiq Akinkunmi Googaa, a 400-level student of Education and Arabic.

When presiding over the meeting, as the leader of the association, he congratulated newly admitted students for being among those who have the opportunity to be admitted among thousands of admission seekers,and welcomed them to the NAOSS UDUS family.He also extended his warmest greeting to the returning students by welcoming them back to the citadel of learning.

The president enlightened the newly admitted students on their primary assignment on campus and told the consequences of lagging behind the study well. He also revealed the importance of the association and its benefits to the members which encouraged them to be among the bona fide members and see the NAOSS as family.

Furthermore, Comrade Abdulrauf Naheem Kahinde, A 500-level students of law, expressed words of advice to the newly admitted students to be very strict with the lecture and always be abider of the rules and regulations.He also remind them that UDUS is far away from home, indeed they should know what their doing on campus.

" I believe Everyone knows how many Bridges he crossed before reaching here (UDUS).Don't skip any lecture, your first priority is your primary assignment, Don't allow anything to distract you. Pay full attention to the lecturers when you are in Class" He said.

A BRIEF NOTE ON THE CURRENT VC OF UDUS (Professor Lawal Suleman Bilbis)

Good day NAOS SITES! Have you ever read about the biography of your university corrent vice chancellor? Let us have a nice read on a brief history about your destination varsity current VC. As we have promised that there will always be something coming to our door about the UDUS every Thursday of the week. Let's go again!

Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis (born 1961, magazu village Tsafe, Zamfara State) is an educator and lecturer in the department of Biochemistry at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University appointed as the Vice chancellor of the University in July 2019, replaced professor Abdullahi Zuru.He was the Head Department of Biochemistry, Deputy Dean, Dean of Science, Director University Development Affairs and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of UDUS.He previously served as the deputy chancellor academics at Usmanu Danfodiyo University and had served as the pioneer vice chancellor of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi in 2013-2015

Professor Lawal Suleman Bilbis obtained a PhD in Biological Chemistry from the University of Essex, Colchester in 1992, and rose to become a Professor of Biochemistry in 2002 at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS).

Bilbis has to his credit over 100 research publications in journals across the globe. His research papers are in the areas of protein chemistry, clinical and paediatric nutrition, elucidation of mechanism of action of antidiabetic, antihypertensive and antimalarial agents. His main research focus is however on oxidative stress and pathogenesis of traumatic brain injury, stroke, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

He has presented more than 70 research papers at conferences across the world and has 3 patents to his credit. He has attracted grants to support his research from agencies across the world, and has supervised to completion dozens of PhD and M.Sc. theses. He was a Research Fellow at the King Khalid Military Academy, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1996-1998). Bilbis was on the Executive Council of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) between 1995 and 2011. He was the National President of the Society between 2007 and 2011.

Currently he is on the Executive Council of Federated African Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is a Fellow of Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (FNSBMB), Science Association of Nigeria (FSAN), Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (FSESN) and African Scientific Institute (FASI). He is currently the Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He is happily married with children and grandchildren.

DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION (SVE) UDUS

Gooday NAOSSITES, hope this find you well, here again Thursday as we promise to bring before you something about our prestigious university. Today, we are going to briefly discuss a department called SVE in the faculty of Education and Extension services UDUS.

The University of Sokoto, now Usmanu Danfodiyo University was established in 1975, however academic programmes could not start until 1977. The Faculty of Education and Extension Services along with 4 other pioneering Faculties were established to start academic activities in the university. In history, the Department of Education was among the 2 departments established in the Faculty.The Department offered various degree programmes including Bachelor of Science degrees in education B Sc(ed). The programmes are: – B. Sc(Ed) Mathematics – B. Sc(Ed) Biology – B. Sc(Ed) Chemistry – B. Sc(Ed) Physics

However, In1993 the Department of Education was splitted into 3 academic units, namely; – Science and Vocational Education unit – Educational Foundations unit, and – Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology unit. The 3 units continued to operate with a Head and run relevant degree programmes in their areas of specialization. All the 3 units were answerable to Head of Department of Education.

The Science and Vocational Education Unit continued to run the 4 degree programmes in Science and mathematics as mentioned earlier. In 2009, the 3 academic units were upgraded into full-fledged degree awarding departments. Thus, the Department of Science and Vocational Education has come into being from the science and vocational education unit of the department of education. The new department (SVE) has 12 academic staff, 4 non-academic staff and approximately students from UG I-IV as per 2009/2010 academic session. Furthermore, the department as of now offers both full-time and Part-time undergraduate degree programmes. For full-time, the following programmes are run by the department. – B. Sc(Ed) Mathematics – B. Sc(Ed) Biology – B. Sc(Ed) Chemistry – B. Sc(Ed) Physics On the Part-time bases, the following degree programme are offered: – B. Ed Agricultural Sciences Education – B. Ed Integrated Science Education – B. Ed Mathematics Education – B. Ed Computer Education – B. Ed Business Studies Education. Postgraduate programmes started in the defunct department of education in 1985 with M. Ed and Ph. D Science Education, while M Ed Mathematics Education was introduced in the 1989/1990 session. Ph. D Mathematics Education programme was introduced in the 2004/2005 session. The department also offers M. Phil in Science and Mathematics Education

The vision of this new department(SVE) is To be a center of excellence for the training of Science and Vocational teachers and managers of Educational organizations.

The mission is To provide quality Science and Vocational teachers, Educational administrators and community services to all, under the most conducive environment in line with National Policy in Education, irrespective of individual differences.

FEBRUARY 7, TODAY IN HISTORY

Hello everyone,

Imagine strapping yourself into the nose cone of one of the most powerful rockets ever built, then blazing out of our atmosphere to a zone with little hope of rescue.
The daring of early NASA astronauts is hard to comprehend. On February 7, 1984, Bruce McCandless II continued NASA’s tradition of awe-inspiring achievement when he took the first untethered spacewalk.

“It may have been a small step for Neil, but it’s a heck of a big leap for me,” McCandless said before leaving the space shuttle. The line, intended to ease his colleagues’ nerves, also paid tribute to words spoken by astronaut Neil Armstrong upon becoming the first person to set foot on the moon in 1969.

McCandless, a veteran astronaut and trained engineer, trusted his life to the manned maneuvering unit that he helped design. The same day, and again February 9, McCandless, as well as fellow astronaut Robert Stewart, took untethered walks and went approximately 90 meters from the space shuttle.

Those spacewalks followed NASA’s first spacewalk June 3, 1965. In that case, astronaut Edward H. White II was secured to a spacecraft by two lines approximately 7 meters long.
NASA conducted untethered spacewalks on three shuttle missions in 1984, before discontinuing the practice two years later.

In 1994, a NASA astronaut tested a new propulsive backpack system designed for use in case an astronaut becomes untethered during a spacewalk.
Forty years after the first untethered spacewalk, NASA’s Artemis missions are working to return to the moon and send astronauts to Mars.

McCandless was a member of NASA’s astronaut corps from 1966 to 1990. He died December 21, 2017, at age 80, with the hope his work would inspire the next generation of explorers.

Good day dear NAOSSITES, here again Thursday as its turned to our culture to bring before you UDUS: the past, the pressent and the foreseeable future.

The Faculty of Education and Extension Services is one of the prestigious faculties existing in UDUS, which is claimed to be the mother of all faculties.It started a four-year integrated B.Sc. (Honours) degree programme for direct entry students with A level or equivalent qualification in 1980/81 session.

Presently, the faculty contains five (5) departments

Department of Educational foundation
Department of science and vocational Education
Department of library and information science
Department of curriculum studies and educational Tech.
Department of Adult Education and Extension services

Each department has various units as courses under each abovementioned departments.

However, In the past, as it stated in the history before,The programme in education faculty was based on a course unit system. The third year of the programme was devoted entirely to on-farm practical training.
In the 1985/86 session, the programme was reviewed to allow for the admission of students with 0 level who would then graduate after 5 years. Since then, the practical training has shifted to the fourth year. From 1990 to date, the programme has been modified to a professional one named B. Agriculture. When the programme started in the 1980/81 session, 13 students were admitted. The number has steadily increased over the years.The programme was revised in 1989 to conform with the NUC Approved Minimum Academic Standards. During the 1997/98 session, there were about 600 students in the Faculty. The programme was further revised in 2011 to conform with the NUC Approved Minimum Academic Standard.

HISTORY ABOUT OSUN STATE

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF ERIN-IJESHA WATERFALL (OLUMIRIN)

Waterfalls are magnificent work of nature all over the world, they are known to attract visitors for the quiet and sense of purity one becomes filled with.

Today we will be telling the historical story of Erin-Ijesha waterfall which is also known as "OLUMIRIN" which can also be translated in another form as "OLUWAMIRAN"(Another god).

Olumirin water fall is located in Erin-Ijesha, Oriade local government of Osun state. Towering high, the cliff can be found within the community axis of Erin-Oke, Erin-Ijesha and Erinmo.

Olumirin was discovered in 1140 AD by a woman called Yeye Aiye Akinla during her hunting session. Yeye Akinla was one of the granddaughters of Oduduwa that migrated to Erin-Ijesha from Ile-Ife and is believed to be the founder of Erin-Ijesha town.

Being the one that founded the town, she was regarded as Yeye of the land which means mother of the land. In one of her hunting expenditures she accidentally came in contact with the waterfall, considering the fact she is the lord over the land she couldn't help but marvel over the magnificence of the waterfall which made her to alter the word "ALUMIRIN" meaning "there is another deity".This word attest to her confirming she is not only the lord of over the land.

The natives regard the waterfall as a sacred site and a means of purifying their souls. They also believe that the waterfall flows from a big pot located at the top of rock. The waterfalls has seven falls, each one providing a new and different perspective. The waterfall forms a large pool of water on the ground, surrounded by vegetation. The steps needed to reach a next level are not specified. Climbing them may be a daunting task, but it is a rewarding one as it gives an awe-inspiring experience. One can make going beyond the third step a quest as most people are unable to, or maybe they just don’t try. As most people begin to climb the waterfalls, they begin the numbering from the base to the top, whereas it’s the other way round. The first waterfall is the one at the top. The second is the largest, with waters gushing down from a 40m rock.

It is one of the most visited tourist sites in Nigeria. In 2014, between January to November, Olumirin Falls recorded over 50,000 visitors, the tourist site with the highest visits that year. During the celebration of the annual Osun-Osogbo Festival and Culture, Olumirin waterfall attracts more visitors from all over the globe. A tour around other tourist sites that does not include a visit to Erin-Ijesha waterfall is incomplete.

School of Medical laboratory scientist

The Faculty of Education and Extension Services is one of the prestigious faculties existing in UDUS, which is claimed to be the mother of all faculties.It started a four-year integrated B.Sc. (Honours) degree programme for direct entry students with A level or equivalent qualification in 1980/81 session. The programme was based on a course unit system. The third year of the programme was devoted entirely to on-farm practical training.
In 1985/86 session, the programme was reviewed to allow for the admission of students with 0’level who would then graduate after 5 years. Since then, the practical training has shifted to the fourth year. From 1990 to date, the programme has been modified to a professional one named B. Agriculture. When the programme started in 1980/81 session, 13 students were admitted. The number has steadily increased over the years.
The programme was revised in 1989 to conform with the NUC Approved Minimum Academic Standards. During the 1997/98 session, there were about 600 students in the Faculty. The programme was further revised in 2011 to conform with the NUC Approved Minimum Academic Standard.
