There is so much more math and science in herbal medicine than most people realize! Sure, you can pour solvent over some herbs and make something… but making truly effective herbal medicine includes some fundamental knowledge about how herbs work together and with various solvents plus some pretty complex calculations!
I have made it my life’s work to simplify the complexity and make the skills needed to make herbal medicine accessible. Annnddd… I’m bringing my Herbal Medicine Making class online for the first time starting next week! Join me if you want to learn the real nitty gritty of how to make herbal medicine that actually works! Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) is an incredible and often-overlooked adaptogenic herb 🌿 most often found in the Southeast but ranging all the way up to Maryland. While it was used for hundreds of years, it fell out of popular modern-day use until folk herbalist Tommie Bass (the teacher of one of my first teachers, Darryl Patton) brought it back into light.
A few more things to know about Crossvine
-You can find it year-round, though in winter ❄️ it takes on more of a reddish tint
-It does have some not-so-nice lookalikes, so make sure to look up more botanical images
-Clinically, I tend to use it for run-down, burnt out people with high stress jobs who are chronically dehydrated
-It has a lovely chocolate 🍫 taste when cold extracted in tea form

2023 YEAR IN REVIEW - 🌿In June of this year I made a pact with my therapist to start making reels. I was terrified. I have always struggled with social media and despite being pretty gregarious being out on the internet has always been really hard for me and felt very vulnerable. So, the deal with my therapist was that I would make one to three reels a week and I was allowed to do them badly. I wanted to let myself off the hook of doing them well. I didn’t want the pressure of feeling like they needed to be perfect as I learned and figured out how to edit and add captions and learn about lighting and content. Then, 3 weeks after starting, MY “bad” reels started reaching 1 million people and THIS REEL blew up and reached 1.5 million and guess what? I called my therapist and had a panic attack. So, let's keepnwrying permission slips for doing things badly- for making teeter-totering slow and painful steps forward. I'm still learning a lot, I’m still growing, and uncomfortable but DAMN sometimes that momentum just carries us WAY beyond what we were hoping for. Blessing to you all for the new year and in just going to keep taking my baby steps! Thank you all for being here with me. 🙏🙏🙏 #2023 #YearInReview2023 #herbalism #foraging #medicinemaking #fyp #reelsvideo #famous #herbal #webinar #yummy #foragedfood #survivalfood #usa #fbreels

Working with unproductive, persistent coughs can be really difficult, but the three things I think about are decongestant herbs, expectorating herbs, and moistening or demulcent herbs. My top three favorite expectorating and decongestant herbs for stuck coughs are Osha, Poplar buds, and grindelia. I always add in a demulcent like marshmallow or licorice unless the person is licorice sensitive. In the two king pins of this formula or pleurisy root which is incredibly moistening but particularly anti-inflammatory for inflamed lung tissue and mullein leaf. Happy formulating! #herbalformula #herbalmedicine #foraging #professionalherbalist #clinicalherbalism #deeprootsherbschool #fyp #reelsvideo #hilarious #facebookreelsviral #usa #fbreels
Usnic acid and usnea does have a few case reports of significant liver damage in humans. These case reports are significant enough that we need to reassess our parameters of dosage when using usnea internally. It is not uncommon when we see research on the toxicity of herbal medicines the research often is done using incredibly high dosages of isolated constituents from plants on rats which doesn’t give us accurate data to make clinical extrapolations in humans with whole plant extracts. But these case reports on usnea were whole herb extracts, as well as isolated usnic acid on human beings, and resulted in significant liver damage requiring liver transplants in more than one case. The more we know the better we do. We can use usnea but need to proceed with more caution than I am currently seeing in the community. #herbsaresafewhenyouknowwhatyouaredoing #foraging #herbalmedicine #clinicalherbalism #herbaleducation #usnea #fyp #reelsvideo #hilarious #usa #fbreels
Since drought is making our fall season a little sparse here in AL, I’m throwing it back to an amazing summer plant that you’ll want on hand for cold and flu season. 🌿Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) 🌿might feel reminiscent of childhood- lying on a trampoline with a pile of the flowers eating the nectar- but it’s also a great antiviral and immune stimulant to have in your back pocket for cold and flu season. #honeysuckle #foraging #herbalmedicine #herbalist #clinicalherbalist #deeprootsherbschool #fyp #reelsvideo #hilarious #usa #fbreels

🌱A plant to support healthy
blood sugar and
help with stomach ulcers... Yellow root is a little different than many other bitter plants because of it's characteristic astringency. This makes it particularly adept at working with stomach ulcers. And no- I'm not saying you should not seek medical treatment for stomach ulcers as they can be dangerous if untreated but their is really solid research on the effects of Xanthorhiza on H. Pylori the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers. It works very well in a tea form and you will notice a difference in a few days on your digestion and sugar cravings. #bloodsugar #stomachulcer #herbalmedicine #fyp #foraging #deeprootsherbschool
🍃Tannins vs Alkoloids🍃
Who wins? Really…no one. 🫠
The reason we generally avoid combining alkaloidal and tannic herbs has to do with chemistry.🤓
Alkaloids are a family of chemical compounds that are found in many of our favorite medicinals. Some well-known alkaloidal herbs include Coffee☕, Chocolate, 🍫Lobelia (Lobelia inflata), and Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis).
On the other hand, tannins are a class of astringent constituents - they're what give you that dry, puckery feeling in your mouth when you drink a strong cup of tea/dry wine or bite into an unripe persimmon. Some tannic herbs include Oak bark (Quercus spp.) and Black tea (Camellia sinensis).
Now, here's the kicker: tannins can bind to alkaloids, potentially making them less bioavailable. This means that if you combine an alkaloidal herb and a tannic herb in the same preparation, the tannins might bind to the alkaloids and reduce their effectiveness.
So, in a nutshell, it's all about making sure we get the most out of our herbs. We want those beneficial compounds to be available for our bodies to use, not tied up in a tannin-alkaloid complex.
