Sometimes, I take real joy in designing covers and this one was a lot of fun. Even though it is a simple headshot, the picture presented some difficulties that others might not think of. First there is the standard uniform with the team's name on it. Not so much a copyright issue, but serves more of a distraction for the title and author name you would normally have on a paperback cover. Two, and most importantly is the darkening of photos over time. I learned this from my mentor Merl Kast, who passed away in 2006, and the role acid can play in damaging paper/photos. As time goes by, the hues darken and the clarity of the photo is diminished.

Paired with my love of LIFE Magazines from the period, I think the cover is fitting tribute. As a corollary, a slight white inner bevel can be found as well on the title, which is also a nod to 1940s and 50s baseball cards.

Hi everyone. We have been making some changes to the website and such and looking to do a redesign in the not too distant future. However, I wanted to bring some things to your attention:

1) We have eliminated eBook only plans entirely. We still offer eBooks with our print plans, but we are no longer servicing eBook only plans (no printed book). We will do this for our legacy titles, but will not be having this service for future titles.

2) We have eliminated online chat for our website. It seems that no one is using this service like in the past. So, we are now communicating via text, talk or e-mail. This one is a little counterintuitive to me, but it seems people are almost exclusively communicating via text, talk or e-mail. I feel that chat is a better medium than text, but a lot of people are not comfortable chatting using a mobile device.

3) We are looking to offer a services only package. These will be for individual authors who want to set-up an account with companies like KDP or Ingram Spark. We offer design and formatting services (and even help you set-up an account with them) and make sure everything is compliant to their standards. These services will have a fixed cost and will also reduce hardships for authors who want to do it on their own.

I know a lot of you have felt the effects of inflation every day in buying groceries, your utility bills, and just about every other aspect of your life. As you may or may not know, I will be sticking by my pledge to not increase printing pricing until January 2024. However, there will be a 25 percent increase in general supplies, printing and shipping starting in June 2023. So, I encourage everyone to get your orders in before the end of 2023 if you wish to avoid these upcoming printing price increases.

From the humble beginnings of binding books on a living room coffee table, through two major recessions, covid, and now historic inflation, I’m proud of what Wasteland Press has accomplished through the years. Now entering my 24th year in publishing, I have never seen anything like the price increases we have seen. I have negotiated rates and even left some long-time business partners all in order to keep prices where they are. I have personally converted and altered—graphically—over 2,000 titles in order to accommodate these changing business partnerships. Some of you may have seen a decline in my posting here, as well as a general decline in being able to answer your questions more efficiently through e-mail and on the phone. So, please accept my apology for all this change and I greatly appreciate your understanding. I’m looking forward to working with you for years to come and I hope you will keep us in mind for your future publishing needs.

It is with a heavy heart today that I found out about the passing of Bill Davidson. I will always remember fondly talking to him about baseball and life in general. Being in the publishing business for the last 23 years, I have met many individuals with great stories to tell, but it is rare to be able to call them your friend. He's the type of guy to say "Thank you" and mean it and he would show his gratitude with a long personal letter and a gift basket. They just don't make gentleman like this anymore. He was truly a class act.

Speaking to his widow today, I heard a truly beautiful love story for the ages. And I can not shake the thought of how the world has lost a truly kind person who touched many lives. Rest in Peace, Bill. You will be missed.

Just in time for Veteran's Day. This book is a biography about Lt. Harry R. Montgomery who was killed in action during Operation Overlord in France on July 13, 1944. He was interred in the U. S. Military Cemetery La Cambe, plot L, row 4, grave 68 (later re-interred at Swea City, Iowa). God bless Lt. Harry R. Montgomery and his family for his ultimate sacrifice. We will never forget.
