Our society is ever-evolving, and advocating for what is right by all people is what we as a society should aspire to achieve. I have spoken about “equality” and its difference from “fairness,” but one thing that people should think about is that even though being equal might sound fantastic, what we should aspire to create is a fair society, not an equal society. As great as it sounds, equality is not always positive. If I were overweight and tall but were not allowed to ride a carnival ride because it goes beyond the weight restrictions, that would be fair. My height and weight are factored in to determine the right and fair thing to do for my safety and the safety of others. Nevertheless, it is not equal treatment. Equal treatment would give me the same opportunities as others, but things are not always so simple. As much as we wish things could be, life is complicated, and all factors must be considered when determining the fair thing to do. We are not equal in our society as individuals, but the rights of our people and the laws implemented within our society can and must be equal. However, fairness is the ultimate goal when we advocate for everyone because being fair considers that we are not equal, and that is how we evolve as a society.

Recently, two transgender women who are biologically male placed first and second place in the Illinois State Cyclocross Championship (Dorgan, 2023). While many people think this is wrong, this is an example of equality. Clarifying the difference between “equality” and “fairness” is imperative because equality has different results than fairness. As I had mentioned in an earlier post, equality disregards our differences. The two transgender women and the women cyclists, regardless of if you agree or disagree with transgenders in sports, were treated equally, and the two transgender women outperformed the remaining women. This is equality. Although, this is where we can argue that it is not fair. Is it fair if a biological male competes against a biological woman? We can argue all day about gender identity or how hormone treatment can increase or decrease muscle mass to even the playing ground between biological males and females Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland Clinic, 2021). Because we have biological males who identify as women and compete as such, we will continue to have an issue with fairness in sports. The narrative for equality needs to be approached with caution, as equality can have unfair consequences. Fairness considers that we are different, while equality disregards our differences. This is not an argument of transgenderism, but regardless, this is what equality looks like, and it is not always fair.

Stay strong my friends.

We have come a long way since Women's Suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement. Moreover, while we have made great strides for equality, there is still advocacy to promote an even more equal society. However, there is a significant misconception that I have noticed when scrolling through social media sites and strongly biased news organizations such as Fox and CNN. "equality" is often misused and confused with "fairness." You will often hear them used interchangeably, but they mean two separate things, and when you do use them interchangeably, the message takes on a different meaning. People's intentions are good, but think about what happens when you misuse each word.

We are not born equal. We are created differently. When we talk about our biological differences, men and women are not created equal. Even socially, there are things men can get away with that women cannot, and vice versa. For example, a guy can openly walk around without a shirt, but a female cannot, which is considered taboo. Alternatively, if a woman is to hit a man, it is okay, but for a man to hit a woman, it is wrong. There are consequences to equality. Equality does not consider gender, s*x, race, or any other demographic, as we are all equal. Equality says both s*xes can walk around topless or must both remain covered, regardless of taboos. Equality would be if a woman raises her fist against a man, the man can justifiably close fist punch the woman. We cannot be equal, but our rights as citizens can be.

Life is not always fair, but we can adjust things within our society to make things suitable. Let us look at the comparison of the NBA and WNBA. Players in the WNBA make significantly less money because they do not pull in the same revenue as NBA players, even though they have the same profession, which is justifiable. Although this may be a conversation you have heard on social media websites, some WNBA players call the narrative false. They are not asking for equal pay but more about the same revenue percentage as NBA players make, with merchandise sales and revenue. In that regard, that would be fair. Fairness considers our differences.
This is not an argument of rights but how we use "equality" and "fairness" when advocating for change. Be careful when using these two words; you might regret getting what you requested.

Stay strong, my friends.
