We have come a long way since Women's Suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement. Moreover, while we have made great strides for equality, there is still advocacy to promote an even more equal society. However, there is a significant misconception that I have noticed when scrolling through social media sites and strongly biased news organizations such as Fox and CNN. "equality" is often misused and confused with "fairness." You will often hear them used interchangeably, but they mean two separate things, and when you do use them interchangeably, the message takes on a different meaning. People's intentions are good, but think about what happens when you misuse each word.
We are not born equal. We are created differently. When we talk about our biological differences, men and women are not created equal. Even socially, there are things men can get away with that women cannot, and vice versa. For example, a guy can openly walk around without a shirt, but a female cannot, which is considered taboo. Alternatively, if a woman is to hit a man, it is okay, but for a man to hit a woman, it is wrong. There are consequences to equality. Equality does not consider gender, s*x, race, or any other demographic, as we are all equal. Equality says both s*xes can walk around topless or must both remain covered, regardless of taboos. Equality would be if a woman raises her fist against a man, the man can justifiably close fist punch the woman. We cannot be equal, but our rights as citizens can be.
Life is not always fair, but we can adjust things within our society to make things suitable. Let us look at the comparison of the NBA and WNBA. Players in the WNBA make significantly less money because they do not pull in the same revenue as NBA players, even though they have the same profession, which is justifiable. Although this may be a conversation you have heard on social media websites, some WNBA players call the narrative false. They are not asking for equal pay but more about the same revenue percentage as NBA players make, with merchandise sales and revenue. In that regard, that would be fair. Fairness considers our differences.
This is not an argument of rights but how we use "equality" and "fairness" when advocating for change. Be careful when using these two words; you might regret getting what you requested.
Stay strong, my friends.
